“Comfort women” are survivors of sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, who endured extensive trauma including massive rape and physical torture. While previous studies have been focused on the trauma of the survivors themselves, the effects of the trauma on the offspring has never been evaluated before. In this article, we reviewed the first study on the offspring of former “comfort women” and aimed to detect the evidence of transgenerational transmission of trauma. In-depth psychiatric interviews and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 Axis I Disorders were conducted with six offspring of former “comfort women.” Among the six participants, five suffered from at least one psychiatric disorder including major depressive disorder, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, adjustment disorder, insomnia disorder, somatic symptom disorder, and alcohol use disorder. Participants showed similar shame and hyperarousal symptoms as their mothers regarding stimuli related to the “comfort woman” issue. Increased irritability, problems with aggression control, negative worldview, and low self-esteem were evident in the children of mothers with posttraumatic stress disorder. Finding evidence of transgenerational transmission of trauma in offspring of “comfort women” is important. Future studies should include more samples and adopt a more objective method.

“Comfort women” refers to young women and girls who were forced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese military during World War II. They were abducted from their homes in countries under Imperial Japanese rule, mostly from Korea, and the rest from China, Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Netherlands, etc. “Comfort women” endured extreme trauma involving rape, sexual torture, physical abuse, starvation, threats of death, and witnessed many others being tortured and killed. This article reviews all the studies that have investigated the psychiatric or psychosocial sequelae of the survivors of the Japanese military sexual slavery. Most importantly, a recent study which conducted a psychiatric evaluation on the former “comfort women” currently alive in South Korea is introduced. The participants’ unmarried rate was relatively high and their total fertility rate was relatively low. Majority of the participants reported having no education and being the low economic status. They showed high current and lifetime prevalence of posttraumatic disorder, major depressive disorder, somatic symptom disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and alcohol use disorder. Participants showed high suicidality and majority of the participants still reported being ashamed of being former “comfort women” after all these years. This article highlights the fact that the trauma has affected the mental health and social functioning of former “comfort women” throughout their lives, and even to the present day.

<P><B>Ferritin‐based nanoprobe (FBNP) hydrogel provides solutions</B> to some of the traditional problems of bioassays. The schematic shows 3D and highly specific multiplex assays of markers for AIDS and Sjögren's syndrome using quantum‐dot based reporters with different fluorescence emissions for the two syndromes. The advantages of using a hydrogel include that the stability of FBNPs is significantly enhanced within the hydrogel, FBNPs are distributed evenly throughout the hydrogel matrix, and the amount of FBNPs within the hydrogel can be well controlled.</P>
Proteinticle Engineering for Accurate 3D Diagnosis

<P>In nature certain proteins are self-assembled inside cells to form nanoscale particles (named “proteinticles”) with constant structure and surface topology. Unlike chemically synthesized nanomaterials (<I>e.g</I>., various metal, carbon, and polymer nanoparticles), a variety of functional proteinticles can be easily created through genetic modification of the proteinticle surface, <I>i</I>.<I>e</I>., by adding or inserting specified proteins/peptides to the N- or C-terminus or the internal region of the protein constituent. Here we present proteins/peptides that recognize disease-specific antibodies on the surface of human ferritin based proteinticles for accurate 3D diagnosis of human autoimmune and infectious diseases. The surface display of the extracellular domain of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) with native conformation successfully discriminated between autoantibodies to native or denatured MOG, leading to the reliable diagnosis of multiple sclerosis with enhanced accuracy. Also we simultaneously displayed different antigenic peptides from hepatitis C virus (HCV) on the same proteinticle surface with modulating the composition of each peptide. The proteinticles with the heterogeneous peptide surface detected anti-HCV antibodies in patient sera with 100% accuracy. CRISPR-Cap: multiplexed double-stranded DNA enrichment based on the CRISPR system

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Existing methods to enrich target regions of genomic DNA based on PCR, hybridization capture, or molecular inversion probes have various drawbacks, including long experiment times and low throughput and/or enrichment quality. We developed CRISPR-Cap, a simple and scalable CRISPR-based method to enrich target regions of dsDNA, requiring only two short experimental procedures that can be completed within two hours. We used CRISPR-Cap to enrich 10 target genes 355.7-fold on average from <I>Escherichia coli</I> genomic DNA with a maximum on-target ratio of 81% and high enrichment uniformity. We also used CRISPR-Cap to measure gene copy numbers and detect rare alleles with frequencies as low as 1%. Finally, we enriched coding sequence regions of 20 genes from the human genome. We envision that CRISPR-Cap can be used as an alternative to other widely used target-enrichment methods, which will broaden the scope of CRISPR applications to the field of target enrichment field.</P>
A novel approach to ultrasensitive diagnosis using supramolecular protein nanoparticles

<P>We report on the ultrasensitive protein nanoprobe system that specifically captures disease marker (autoantibodies of Type I diabetes in this case) with attomolar sensitivity. The system relies on supramolecular protein nanoparticles that bind a specific antibody [65 kDa glutamate decarboxylase (GAD65)-specific autoantibody, i.e., the early marker of Type I diabetes]. The ultrasensitive detection of early marker of Type I diabetes during the early phase of pancreatic beta-cell destruction is important because individuals at high risk of developing Type I diabetes can be identified several years before the clinical onset of the ailment. The bacterial expression of chimera genes encoding N-[human ferritin heavy chain (hFTN-H)]::[specific antigenic epitope]-C produces supramolecular nanoparticles with uniform diameters (10-15 nm), owing to self-assembly activity of hFTN-H. Each nanoparticle, formed by intermolecular self-assembly between the chimera protein molecules, is subjected to carrying a large number (presumably, 24) of epitopes with a homogeneous and stable conformation per autoantibody binding, thereby allowing substantial enhancement of sensitivity. The sensitivity was finally boosted to 3 attomolar concentration of the autoantibodies, 4-9 orders of magnitude more sensitive than conventional immunoassays. Also, this ultrasensitive protein nanoprobe successfully detected natural autoantibodies in the sera from Type I diabetic patients. The attomolar sensitivity was successfully reproduced on the detection of other antibodies, i.e., monoclonal antibodies against hepatitis B surface antigen. With the two antibody markers above, the feasibility of simultaneous and multiplexing-mode detection was also demonstrated.</P>
Suicidal Ideation of the Elderly According to Their Involvement in Grandchild Care

The purpose of the present study was to examine the severity of suicidal ideation of the older adults according to the amount of involvement in grandchild care. Data for this research were drawn from a cross-sectional study conducted on community-dwelling adults aged 65 years or older. The 922 participants were divided into three groups according to their involvement in grandchild care: 18.5% had provided daily care, 12.4% had provided occasional care, and 69.1% had never cared for their grandchildren. ANCOVA analysis showed that the scores for depression was significantly lower in the group which took care of their grandchildren occasionally compared to the other two groups. The scores for suicidal ideation was significantly higher in the group which had never taken care of their grandchildren compared to the other two groups. Current study suggests that grandparenting may have a positive effect on suicidal ideation of the older adults.

<P>An effective mask-free method for fabricating high-aspect-ratio pillarlike nanostructures over a large area of a quartz surface via a simple O<SUB>2</SUB> and CF<SUB>4</SUB> two-step reactive ion etching (RIE) procedure is developed. The nanostructured quartz surfaces are successfully combined with the engineered viral particles derived from hepatitis B virus capsid, yielding a novel 3D assay system with attomolar sensitivity, which has great potential for use in sensitive and early detection of various disease markers.</P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>Nanostructured quartz surfaces are densely covered with probe antibodies in a controlled orientation via engineered viral nanoparticles, leading to the preparation of a 3D assay system. <P>On page 4739, J. Lee and co‐workers report a novel bioassay platform that is based on ferritinbased nanoprobe (FBNP) hydrogel, a threedimensional gel matrix with high porosity, large surface area, and high water content. The FBNP hydrogel entraps a large number of stable FBNPs with precise loading control and the antigen probes on FBNPs are homogeneously oriented as well as uniformly spaced within the gel matrix. Finally, the FBNP hydrogel is successfully used for a multiplex diagnosis of AIDS and SS with high sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility. </P>
