Grover disease (also known as transient or persistent acantholytic dermatosis) is a pruritic polymorphic papulovesicular eruption that is histologically characterized by the presence of epidermal acantholysis. It primarily occurs in middle-aged individuals and manifests as scattered erythematous or brown papules as well as papulovesicles on the sun-exposed skin of the trunk. A 52-year-old man had erythematous papules and patches linearly arranged on the left thigh and leg with mild pruritus. The skin lesions were successfully treated with a topical corticosteroid. However, 2 months later, the lesions recurred. The histological examination of a punch biopsy revealed focal acantholytic clefts with dyskeratotic cells, hyperkeratosis, and the infiltration of perivascular lymphocytes and eosinophils. Taken together with the late onset and lack of family history, we diagnosed this condition as Grover disease distributed along the Blaschko line, a condition presented here for the first time. Background: Diabetes is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, which can increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by the mitochondrial electron transport chain. The formation of ROS induces oxidative stress and activates oxidative damage-inducing genes in cells. No research has been published on oxidative damage-related extracellular superoxide dismutase (EC-SOD) protein levels in human diabetic skin. We investigated the expression of EC-SOD in diabetic skin compared with normal skin tissue in vivo. Objectives: To compare the expression of EC-SOD in normal skin versus diabetic skin. Methods: The expression of EC-SOD protein was evaluated by western blotting in 6 diabetic skin tissue samples and 6 normal skin samples. Immunohistochemical staining was also carried out to confirm the EC-SOD expression level in the 6 diabetic skin tissue samples. Results: The western blotting showed significantly lower EC-SOD protein expression in the diabetic skin tissue than in the normal tissue. Immunohistochemical examination of EC-SOD protein expression supported the western blotting analysis. Conclusion: Diabetic skin tissues express a relatively small amount of EC-SOD protein and may not be protected against oxidative stress. We believe that EC-SOD is related to the altered metabolic state in diabetic skin, which elevates ROS production.

Hydrogen is the most promising energy carrier in near future. Liquid hydrogen has advantages in storage and transportation due to its higher density than gaseous hydrogen. Gaseous hydrogen at atmospheric condition is liquefied through cryogenic liquefaction process. This paper describes design of such cryogenic liquefaction cycles. We designed hydrogen liquefaction cycle on the basis of Linde-Hampson liquefaction system. We selected several different cycles as use of GM cryocooler and pre-cooler with liquid nitrogen. From results of analysis, principal parameters such as yield of liquid hydrogen, liquefaction rate and energy consumption are deeply discussed.

The mammalian nervous system contains descending pain control system, such as periaqueductal gray (PAG) and nucleus raphe magnus (NRM). In chronic diabetic neuropathic pain, the activity of descending pain control system may be reduced, further amplifying pain perception. c-Fos protein is rapidly expressed in neurons in response to various stimuli, and c-Fos expression is recognized as a marker of increased neuronal activity. Upregulations of c-Fos expression in the ventrolateral PAG (vlPAG) and NRM suggests the activation of descending pain control system. In the present study, we investigated the effect of treadmill running on the expression of c-Fos in the vlPAG and NRM regions of brains in the streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. Mice in the treadmill exercise group were forced to run on treadmill for 30 min once a day for 30 consecutive days. In mice with STZ-induced diabetes, the expression of c-Fos in the vlPAG and NRM was suppressed. Treadmill running, as like as insulin treatment, significantly increased c-Fos expression in the vlPAG and NRM. These results suggest that treadmill running might activate neurons in the vlPAG and NRM, and thus it alleviate the diabetes-related neuropathic pain through activation of descending pain control system.
