Extended Epitympanotomy for Facial Nerve Decompression as a Minimally Invasive Approach

2019 Journal of Audiology & Otology Vol.23 No.4

For a minimally invasive approach to access the facial nerve, we designed an extended epitympanotomy via a transmastoid approach that has proven useful in cases of traumatic facial nerve palsy and pre-cholesteatoma. To evaluate the surgical exposure through an extended epitympanotomy, six patients with traumatic facial nerve palsy were enrolled in this study. The same surgical technique was used in all patients. Patients were assessed and the degree of facial nerve paralysis was determined prior to surgery, 1-week post-operatively, and 6-months post-operatively using the House-Brackmann grading system. In all cases, surgical exposure was adequate. All patients with traumatic facial nerve palsy were male and the age range was 13 to 83 years. In all cases, the location of the facial nerve damage was limited to the area between the first and second genu. Symptoms of all the patients improved by 6 months post-operation (p=0.024). There were no complications in any of the patients. Extended epitympanotomy is useful for safe, rapid surgical exposure of the attic area, sparing the patient post-operative dimpling, skin incision complications, and lengthy exposure to anesthesia. We suggest that surgery for patients with facial nerve palsy secondary to trauma be performed using this described technique.

China`s Energy Diplomacy and Its “Peaceful Rise” Ambition: The Cases of Sudan and Iran

2013 Asian Journal of Peacebuilding Vol.1 No.2

China has underscored its intention for peaceful development with the vision for a “harmonious world.” But at the same time China is keen to play a more proactive role in the international rule-making process, addressing its dissatisfaction with the existing international system. This article examines whether China`s energy diplomacy vis-a-vis Sudan and Iran has helped or hindered its ambition for peaceful development. China`s dealings with Sudan have departed from its long-standing principle of non-interference in internal affairs to one of active intervention, a change intended to help build China`s image as a “responsible power.” China has also demonstrated its ambition and determination to play a more assertive role in dealing with Iran`s nuclear crisis to facilitate safeguarding China`s energy and economic interests. Yet Beijing has been willing to sacrifice its energy interests when necessary in order to be perceived as a responsible stakeholder within the current international establishment. While it might be natural for China to aspire to a more active international role that befits its economic status, China`s objective of building a harmonious world and its peaceful rise ambition will remain unattainable dreams unless Beijing is prepared to accept some universal principles to guide its energy diplomacy.

Building an Urban Identity in the Literary Space of Hanyang

Vol.0 No.13

This study explores the representation of "Hanyang" of the eighteenth century through a close reading of the literati writings and yadam (unofficial history). So far the studies of Hanyang have been focused on tracing the social and economic changes in the structure and capitalist development of Seoul, intent on locating the birth of modernity of the Choson society. Shifting such perspective to an insider`s look, this study shows how Hanyang and its drastic changes had been perceived by the city dwellers. The literary reflections of Hanyang, envisioned through the eyes of Seoul locals, also offer intriguing observations on the formation of an urban identity in the given context. In the writings, Hanyang was described as the city imbued with greed, temptations, and dangers; the country also loses its symbolic functions and imageries as a natural, innocent, peaceful place, so the conventional images of the city and the country were subverted and revisited in the literati writings. On the other hand, we also witness the rise of kyonghwa sajok (literati groups of the capital) and the Seoul locals, developing a sense of "new" community, during the period. In this study, the building of a new sense of local identity of Hanyang, shows how the urban identity has been created and solidified through the processes of devaluation of others and generation of a notion of the country.

      • Collaborative Information Technology(CIT) Applications in Post-Disaster Public-Private Partnerships

2008 Crisisonomy Vol.4 No.2

The last several years of the Atlantic Hurricane Season have been some of the busiest and most destructive in history. Although paling in human terms in comparison to the Asian Tsunami with its sobering loss of life, a series of Atlantic Hurricanes from 2004 – 2008 have generated some of the largest response and recovery efforts in U.S. history with damage estimates exceeding $100 billion. This paper will discuss two unique public-private partnerships, which operating as computer supported virtual organizations helped redefine state and federal response relating to post disaster construction and temporary housing issues in a disaster. In doing so, the paper will expand collaborative information technology (CIT). The term CIT is used to denote asynchronous technology that provides support for coordination and collaboration through computer supported communication. Although CIT, closely related Computer Mediated Communication (CMC), and Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) are usually associated with constructing or managing interorganizational communication, this paper will explore how web based technology bridged the information gap between government, the private sector, and victims left homeless by a series of catastrophic hurricanes.

Class and Status Mobility of Filipina Local and Transnational Domestic Workers

Janet M. ARNADO Asian Center for Women's Study ; Ewha Womans Unive 2007 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.13 No.4

Using secondary and primary field data, this paper presents a three-pronged argument regarding class mobility and social status of Filipino domestic workers. First, the upward mobility of these workers is contingent upon their situated position within the “international division of reproductive labor” (Parrenas, 2000: 574). Class mobility depends on whether they are situated in mediumsized cities in the periphery, in metropolitan areas of the periphery, in semi-peripheral countries, or in core countries. Second, the extent to which Filipino women are accepted in overseas domestic work depends on their social status in their homeland; the closer to the middle-class level an applicant is, the more likely it is that she will be hired abroad. Third, the Filipina domestic worker has a contradictory class position; in her homeland, First World employment augments her social standing. The closer her workplace is to the core, the greater her upward mobility within her homeland. In the First World, however, her social status declines because “dirty” work is defined as “lower class,” and she is racialized because of her race/ethnicity, class, and nationality.
