Disambiguation of Text Field Data in a Database for Automatic Generation of Concept Hierarchy
JaeKi SONG,Sangno LEE 조선대학교 지식경영연구원 2010 기업과 혁신연구 Vol.3 No.3
In this paper, we propose the disambiguation of text field data in a database using semantic networks for automatic generation of concept hierarchy. One of critical obstacles for the automatic generation of concept hierarchy is polysemy of a word, or multiple meanings of a word. Extant research mainly generates a concept hierarchy for a text field with only one word in a database, and does not expand to multiple words in a field due to the challenge of polysemy. We suggest semantic networks method for disambiguating senses of multiple words in text field. The method first extracts the relations among concepts and constructs semantic networks from external knowledge resources. The resultant semantic networks, then, applied to disambiguate words in a text field for the generation of concept hierarchy. The proposed method is tested in a book title field of a database in a library. The automatic disambiguation of text field data turns out to save efforts of experts or designers who need to identify senses of words for making a concept hierarchy.

In ever-increasing competitive market, the strategic use of information systems has been a main concern for researchers and practitioners for the last decade. In particular, the strategic alignment of information systems to business strategies plays a key role for the value of information systems strategies. Despite of many studies on the strategic alignment of information systems, the narrow perspective on alignments, the paucity of objective materials across firms for research, and a subjective method using survey method hinder the deeper understanding of the role of strategic alignment of information systems. In this study, we extend the concept of alignment to the alignment with other business functions such as finance, accounting, human resources, and marketing, as well as the alignment to business strategies. Throughout CEOs’perspectives expressed in the letters to shareholders of annual reports in Healthcare industry, we find that CEOs have a stereotyped perception on the role of IS strategy as operational efficiency, the implicit alignment in information systems implementing multiple business strategies show a positive relationship with firm performance, and balanced strategy among business functions has a negative association with firm performance. The empirical results shed light on the understanding of strategic alignment of information systems and the identifying the effective information systems strategies for firms’conditions.

This study investigates how the functional attributes of online communities affect community members’ commitment towards their community. We draw on self-regulatory focus theory, highlighting the motivational processes of community members. Specifically, our research model explains that the functional attributes of online communities (performance- and reliability-based attributes) and the regulatory-focus motivations of community members (promotion- and prevention-focus) influence members’ community commitments (affective, normative, and continuance commitments). Our research makes three contributions. First, we suggest a theoretical framework to augment existing motivation and commitment research. Second, we emphasize the role of functional attributes on community members’ motivation and commitment. And third, we explain that online communities can sustain their competitive advantage by improving their community membership base.
