The effect of phosphorus deficiency on the bacteroid content and energy status of soybean nodules

Israel, Daniel W,Sa, Tongmin 한국농화학회 1990 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.33 No.4

Investigations were conducted to examine the effects of phosphorus deficiency on energy status and functioning of soybean nodules. Phosphorus deficiency decreased ATP and total adenylate concentrations in and energy charge and specific nitrogenase activity of whole nodules. The bacteroid content per unit nodule mass and the distribution of total nitrogen and total phosphorus among the bacteroid and host cell fractions of nodules were not affected by phosphorus deficiency. Long term phosphorus-deficiency did not affect the energy charge and ATP concentration in the bacteroid fraction, whereas, these parameters decreased significantly in the host plant cell fraction. Energy charge and ATP concentration in the bacteroid fraction did not change during onset of and recovery from phosphorus deficiency. Conversely, energy charge and ATP concentration in the host plant cell fraction decreased significantly during onset of phosphorus deficiency and increased significantly during recovery from phosphorus deficiency. These results suggest that phosphorus deficiency decrease the specific nitrogenase activity of soybean nodules by inhibiting an energy dependent, reactions) in the host plant cells of nodules.

Diabetes Prevention and Measures to Ensuring a Healthy Lifestyle during COVID-19 Pandemic and after

Israel Oluwasegun Ayenigbara 대한가정의학회 2023 Korean Journal of Family Medicine Vol.44 No.1

The incidence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is increasing exponentially globally, with 90% of the confirmed cases be-ing type 2 DM. The global incidence of DM is expected to increase by 48% during 2017–2045. The coronavirus dis-ease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues to have a massive impact on human health, causing sudden lifestyle changes through quarantine measures, such as lockdown, social distancing, various curfews, and isolation at home. This in turn might increase the risk of developing numerous chronic diseases, such as DM, obesity, and car-diovascular diseases, which increase the severity of COVID-19. To this end, we performed a comprehensive review to determine viable measures for the prevention of DM and its subsequent upsurge globally. Additionally, we have determined strategies that should be adopted globally to ensure a healthy lifestyle during the COVID-19 pandemic and later.

Influence of supplemental canola or soybean oil on milk yield, fatty acid profile and postpartum weight changes in grazing dairy goats

        Israel Lerma-Reyes,German D. Mendoza-Martinez,Rolado Rojo-Rubio,Mario Mejia,J.C. Garcia-Lopez,Hector A. Lee-Rangel 아세아·태평양축산학회 2018 Animal Bioscience Vol.31 No.2

Objective: This experiment was designed to evaluate the effect of supplementation with soybean or canola oil on milk production and the composition of long chain fatty acids as well as weight changes in the goats and their kids. Methods: Thirty nine mulitparous crossed Alpine×Nubian goats (initial body weight [BW] 43.5±1.7 kg) from the day of parturition were assigned to the treatments: grazing control (n = 15); grazing plus 20 mL/goat/d of supplemental soybean oil (n = 12); and grazing plus 20 mL/goat/d of supplemental canola oil (n = 12) from November 26, 2014 to March 7, 2015. The planned contrasts were: CI (control vs supplemented with oils); CII (soybean vs canola oil) to compare the treatment effects. Results: The vegetable oil supplementation reduced weight losses in lactating goats (CI: –0.060 vs 0.090 kg/d; p = 0.03) but did not improve milk production or affect kids’ growth. The content of C4, C6, C8, C10, C11, C14, and C18:1n9t in the milk was increased (p<0.05) with respect to control. However, C12, C14, C16, C18, C18:1n9c, C18:2n6c, and C18:3n3 were reduced (p<0.05) in supplemented goats. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) was increased (p<0.05) in goats supplemented with oils compared to the control group. Conclusion: Supplementation with 20 mL/d of soybean or canola oil did not affect milk production or kids’ performance; however, it increased CLA concentration and reduced the reduced weight losses in lactating goats.

Marked Corridor 20 Meters Brief Walking Aerobic Exercise Improves the Quality of Life and Functional Capability of Stroke Survivor Outpatients in Tertiary Hospitals in Osogbo, Nigeria

        Israel Arogundade Ojo,Olufunmilola Leah Dominic,Wale Johnson Adeyemi 대한물리의학회 2022 대한물리의학회지 Vol.17 No.2

PURPOSE: The functional limitations in stroke survivors promote sedentary lifestyles and quality of life inadequacies, but there is increasing evidence that this could be minimized by physical exercise. Therefore, this study examined the effects of physical exercise on the quality of life (QoL) and functional capacity (ability to stand up from a sitting position) among stroke survivors drafted from two tertiary hospitals in Osogbo, Nigeria. METHODS: A purposive sampling technique was used to select 21 registered right or left outpatient hemiplegic stroke survivors in a pre- and post-test experimental research design. The research questions were presented using descriptive statistics of frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test the study hypothesis at the .05 alpha level for significance. RESULTS: Compared to the baseline (week 0), there were significant increases in the general quality of life, healthy well-being, physical exercise, pain perception, and environmental domains of QOL among the survivors in week four. Moreover, a significant increase was observed in these indices in week eight, compared to week four, except for the pain perception domain. Compared to the baseline, there was a significant decrease in the time it took the stroke survivors to stand up from a sitting position in week four. A significant decrease was observed in this index in week eight compared to week four. CONCLUSION: Marked corridor 20 meters brief walking exercise for eight weeks significantly improved the quality of life and ability to stand up from a sitting position in stroke survivors in Osogbo, Nigeria.

        Risk-Reducing Measures for Cancer Prevention

Israel Oluwasegun Ayenigbara 대한가정의학회 2023 Korean Journal of Family Medicine Vol.44 No.2

Cancer, or malignancy, continues to be one of the most serious health problems in the world, leading to death and disability. Unlike in previous years, where new cases of cancer were predominant in developed nations, the num-ber of cases of cancer and the resultant deaths are increasing in low- and middle-income countries. This is partially attributable to the current trend of adopting a Western lifestyle, substantial urbanization, and the rise in infections, such as the human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV), which together account for over 30% of can-cer cases in underdeveloped and developing nations. The deleterious impact of cancer, as cases multiply world-wide, is multi-dimensional. Cancer exerts serious physical, psychological, and monetary burdens, not only on can-cer patients but also on their family members, close friends, health care systems, and society at large. Importantly, over half of all cancer types can be prevented globally by mitigating the risk and causative factors as well as prompt adherence to scientifically recommended prevention measures. This review provides various scientifically based and people-centered strategies that every individual could adopt to reduce their risk of developing cancer in the fu-ture. It is recommended that, for these cancer prevention strategies to be effective, there should be a strong political will from the governments of individual countries to enact specific laws and implement policies that will signifi-cantly reduce sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating among the general public. Likewise, HPV and HBV vac-cines, as well as cancer screenings, should be made available, affordable, and accessible on a timely basis for those who are eligible to take them. Finally, intensified campaigns and numerous informative and educational programs that promote cancer prevention should be initiated globally.

Automatic progressive damage detection of rotor bar in induction motor using vibration analysis and multiple classifiers

        Israel Cruz-Vega,Jose Rangel-Magdaleno,Juan Ramirez-Cortes,Hayde Peregrina-Barreto 대한기계학회 2017 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.31 No.6

There is an increased interest in developing reliable condition monitoring and fault diagnosis systems of machines like induction motors; such interest is not only in the final phase of the failure but also at early stages. In this paper, several levels of damage of rotor bars under different load conditions are identified by means of vibration signals. The importance of this work relies on a simple but effective automatic detection algorithm of the damage before a break occurs. The feature extraction is based on discrete wavelet analysis and autocorrelation process. Then, the automatic classification of the fault degree is carried out by a binary classification tree. In each node, comparing the learned levels of the breaking off correctly identifies the fault degree. The best results of classification are obtained employing computational intelligence techniques like support vector machines, multilayer perceptron, and the k-NN algorithm, with a proper selection of their optimal parameters.

      • Understanding the Relevance of Oro Festival in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State Nigeria: Implications for Seventh-day Adventist Christian Mission

        ( Israel B. Olaore ) 삼육대학교 선교와사회문제연구소 2017 Asia-Africa Journal of Mission and Ministry(AAMM) Vol.16 No.-

Oro festival, a tradition among the Yoruba people of Southwest Nigeria, serves as a political, spiritual and judicial hallmark of the culture. Restrictions of movement and other punitive measures hold the females in the society to ransom during the Oro festival. This study examined the practice of Oro among the indigenes of Ilishan-Remo Ogun State Nigeria. Functionalist theory of religion formed the theoretical framework for examining the structures within the Oro festival. Seventy-four males and thirty-nine females were interviewed. Findings reveal themes of prayer, fun, male dominance, unity and rest, among others. The study finds that for the indigenes, Oro is a viable means of prayer for the carrying away of sin, receiving protection, prosperity, fertility of women, great harvests and males wanting to have fun. Presenting the Day of Atonement as a type and Jesus as our High priest is a viable mission option. It is concluded that Charles Kraft’s Dynamic Equivalence Churches Model be applied to create an alternative Annual Special Community Day of Prayer and Fun that will compensate for the Oro festival.

25-Hydroxyvitamin D level is sociated with mortality in patients with critical COVID-19: a prospective observational study in Mexico City

        Israel Parra-Ortega,Diana Guadalupe Alcara-Ramirez,Alma Angelica Ronzon-Ronzon,Fermin Elias-Garcia,Jose Agustin Mata-Chapol,Alejandro Daniel Cervantes-Cot,Briceida Lopez-Martinez,Miguel Angel Villasis 한국영양학회 2021 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.15 No.S

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Considering the high number of deaths from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Latin American countries, together with multiple factors that increase the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, we aimed to determine 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels and its association with mortality in patients with critical COVID-19. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This was a prospective observational study including adult patients with critical COVID-19. Data, including clinical characteristics and 25(OH)D levels measured at the time of intensive care unit admission, were collected. All patients were followed until hospital discharge or in-hospital death. The patients were divided into those surviving and deceased patient groups, and univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to determine independent predictors of in hospital mortality. RESULTS: The entire cohort comprised 94 patients with critical COVID-19 (males, 59.6%; median age, 61.5 years). The median 25(OH)D level was 12.7 ng/mL, and 15 (16%) and 79 (84%) patients had vitamin D insufficiency and vitamin D deficiency, respectively. The median serum 25(OH)D level was significantly lower in deceased patients compared with surviving (12.1 vs. 18.7 ng/mL, P < 0.001). Vitamin D deficiency was present in 100% of the deceased patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that age, body mass index, other risk factors, and 25(OH)D level were independent predictors of mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin D deficiency was present in 84% of critical COVID-19 patients. Serum 25(OH)D was independently associated with mortality in critical patients with COVID-19.
