        The general objective of the study was to explore an expanded 'fourth' function of 'International Agricultural Development Activities' of Korean agricultural colleges, Seoul National University College of Agriculture (SNUCA), in particular. In order to attain the general objective, some detailed objectives were formulated: (a) to systematically understand the basic concept of and need for the expanded new function; (b) to make an overview of highly selected foreign agricultural colleges' international agricultural activities with special reference to those in the United States, the firstcomer developed country in the field; and (c) to make a projection on the function to be planned and implemented by the SUNCA. The significance or meaning of the study may be very briefly summarized. First, the Korean national development has been such that Korea has become the most typical firstcomer developing country or newly-industrializing country or economy. Consequently, Korea's most leading SNUCA in higher agricultural learning institutions has been greatly and well developed. Second, being the most typical and forwarding 'more-developed' developing country with tremendous industrialization in such a shorter span of time since the early part of the 1960s, Korea has been expected and sought by so many latecomer developing countries, that is, 'less-developed' developing countries the world over as an appropriate origin for their national development technology, the agricultural and rural development technology, in particular, for their rather immediate utilization, which are mostly agriculture-based so badly lagged. Third, Korea's markedly enhanced status in the international community needs to strengthen her international involvements in terms of development cooperation for the latecomer developing countries the more, for the international development activities, namely, 'International Agricultural Development Activities,' to be planned and implemented for the very unfortunate countries, which would prove of national benefit, too. And finally, fourth, the traditional international donors, for example, the United States, have become weakened, and in this highly internationalization era, Korea as one of the newly-emerging country has to assume the leadership as an international donor, in this case, in the field of agricultural development, to be genuinely internationalized herself. The study had a couple of no small limitations or difficulties: (a) since this study was the first of its kind conducted in Korea, reference information could hardly be found locally, (b) in getting relevant information from arbitrarily selected agricultural colleges in other countries which could be considered far more experienced in the field, only two or three cases could be evaluated satisfactory though almost all (16 out of 17) responded to the information-seeking letters-cum-questionnaires sent. Especially, Dr. Jiryis Oweis of the Board for International Food and Agricultural Development (BIFAD), Department of State of the United States, was very much helpful and Dr. E. W. Coward, Jr., Director, International Agriculture and Professor of Rural Sociology and Asian Studies, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Cornell University, has forwarded the most comprehensive and relevant information. and (c) taking into consideration the fact that this study is of an exploratory nature, contents or the scope of the study was intentionally made limited. From a review of some foreign agricultural colleges' international agricultural activities with special reference to those of the United States, the following were found. (A) Universities or agricultural colleges' authodox and/or fundamental functions of teaching, research and public services have to be supplemented by a fourth function of 'International Agricultural Development Activities' in more developed countries, especially with a view to helping develop so many latecomer developing countries the world over. (B) The new function is not the kind of an one-way, one-direction flow one from more developed countries' agricultural colleges to those in less developed developing countries. The field experiences are fed back to the donor colleges so that they are integrated into the already operating three functions very much to give international perspectives and trainings to students and public or private parties interested in this intensified era of internationalization or globalization. (C) Universities themselves, government authorities concerned, private firms and organizations interested, and major foundations should have recognition, commitments and actual supports for the endeavour. In other words, agricultural colleges must do what they should do and relevant external agencies and organizations must do what they should consider as necessary. (D) the traditional 'Exchange Program' is only part of the International Agricultural Development Function which is far more comprehensive when well developed though the student and faculty exchange program may be considered the core of the international function, being the traditional nucleus of the 'Internationalization of Universities or Agricultural Colleges' in an era of internationalization for human being's symbiotic existence. And (E) the international agricultural development activities have to adopt an interdisciplinary approach among relevant disciplines. In particular, it must be imperative for any development projects to have social scientists formally participated in. In other words, agricultural or rural social sciences, such as agricultural economics, rural sociology, and agricultural and extension education must be represented in any development cooperation teams. Some of the more imortant findings and projections worked out from this study which, among others, aimed at exploring the international agricultural development function for the Seoul National University College of Agriculture of Korea, may be: A) It would be confidently pointed out that faculties of the SNUCA were very much enthusiastic and willing to take up the fourth function of international activities for which basic capacity or qualifications are almost same with or equal to those in other foreign agricultural colleges of significant attention. (B) The Korean government authorities have just initiated to extend development cooperation to latecomer developing countries in the field of, agricultural development, which fact implies, among others, the government authorities concerned should pay their serious attention to the agricultural colleges' role in the framework of the official development cooperation programs. Unfortunately, in the past, the SNUCA and other agricultural colleges used to be given little or no attention at all by the government authorities concerned, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, for example;. the SNUCA is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education in Korea. (C) The SNUCA must do what it. should do within its reach and management: creation of an institutional set-up such as an office of international agricultural development programs; encouraging to set up international courses, preferably of interdisciplinary character when considered pertinent; encouraging to infuse international flavour and perspectives Into existing courses as much as possible; increasing the number of cooperating agricultural colleges primarily in latecomer developing countries, accepting more students from them, together with faculties, who should be accommodated in a dormitory provided; establishing the missing disciplinary departmental set-up for 'Rural Sociology,' etc. (D) In line with the SNUCA's projects, the University headquarters and the Ministry of Education and other ministries concerned should provide the faculties with financial resources so that they could conduct research studies and teaching in cooperation with cooperating agricultural colleges in the very recipient countries. As far as the agricultural industry is concerned, this would enable to make up what Korea badly lacks in the so-called 'Area Studies.' (E) Major private foundations presently found locally, numbering five or so which have interests in promoting academic progress, should turn their attention to the SNUCA's international agricultural development activities for the very unfortunate lagged countries, most of which, naturally are agriculture-based with much to do for improvement, as historically the United States' cases have demonstrated. As a sort of the conclusion of the study, a proposition-like statement may be advanced: the international development function of the Seoul National University College of Agriculture should be integrated into the existing three traditional ones not only for the development of the SNUCA but also for the national interests and needs in this ever-increasing internationalization era as the most important measure to cope with the international developmental challenges.

      • 공단지역 및 청정지역 식물 잎권의 잎표면세균 및 내산성세균의 분포

        산성강하물의 영향을 받는 대천공단지역과 영향을 받지 않는 청정지역인 대전 계족산 자연휴양림에서 자라는 밤나무(Castanea crenat)의 잎표면에서 서식하는 총세균수, 생존세균수, 종속영양세균수, 내산성세균수를 1996년 8월부터 1997년 8월까지 5회에 걸쳐 조사하였다. 공단지역 잎표면 평균 총세균수, 생존세균수 및 종속영양세균수는 각각 9.9×10^(5) cell/㎠, 1.6×10⁴cell/㎠, 7.1×10³cell/㎠,로서 청정지역에 비하여 각각 1.5배, 2배, 2.6배 정도로 관찰되었다. MPN법으로 측정한 pH 5.6애서의 잎표면 내산성세를수는 공단지역 3.3×10⁴, 청정지역 3.4×10⁴MON/㎠로 거의 같았고, pH 4.0에서의 내산성세균수는 공단지역애서 1.9×10^-(-1)MPN/㎠인 반면 청정지역에서는 전혀 검출되지 않았다. pH 3.0에서의 내산성 잎표면세균수는 공단지역과 청정지역의 잎권 어느 곳에서도 검출되지 않았다. 한편 계절별 잎표면세균수의 분포는 대체로 잎이 나기 시작하여 크기가 가장 작은 5월에 최대를, 그리고 낙엽이 지는 11월에 최소를 나타내었다. 이런 결과는 공단지역의 대기오염물질의 침적이 주변의 식물 잎표면 세균수를 감소시키지는 않으며, 특히 산성강하물의 영향으로 내산성세균수가 증가함을 보여주고 있다. Total, direct viable count, and acid-tolerant epiphytic bacterial population sizes were quantified on leaves of chestnut tree (Castanea crenata S. et Z.) near Taejon Industrial Estate affected by acid precipitation and deposition as well as in the clean natural forest area, Mt. Kyejok, in Taejon city from August 1996 to August 1997. Geometric mean numbers of total, direct viable count, and acid-tolerant epiphytic bacteria were 9.9×10^(5) cell/㎠, 1.6×10^(6)cell/㎠, and 7.1×10³cfu/㎠ respecfvely, being 1.5, 2, and 2.6 times those in the clean area. Acid-to-lerant epiphytic bfcterial numbers at pH 5.6 by MPN method were 3.3×10" in the industrial area, about the same as the number,3.4×104 MPNicni, of the clean area. Acid-tolerant bacterial number at pH 4.0 was 1.9×10^(-1)MPN/㎠ in the industrial area, whereas none was detected in the clean area. Acid-tolerant bacteria at pH 3.0 were not detected at all in the industrial area as well as in the clean area. Epiphytic bacterial population sizes were generally the greatest in May when leaves are emerged and grew but the lowest in November when defoliation occurs. These results showed that air pollutant deposition on leaves did not cause a deuease of epiphytic bacteria at least and acid deposition on leaves did cause an increase of acid-tolerant bacteria.

        Proteomics of ionic stresses in rice: An overview

        Ions deficiency or excess remains one of the critical ground level environmental problems, affecting crop productivity. In this overview, we will discuss an increased application of proteomics technology in addressing this issue using rice (Oryza sativa L.) as a model crop plant. Proteomics analyses have revealed that rice proteome undergoes changes in the proteins composition and expression in response to several ionic stresses, including mineral nutrients (aluminum, nitrogen, and phosphorous) and heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, and copper). Developed inventory of responsive proteins and their correlation with changes in physiological symptoms and parameters are a major step forward in: (i) better understanding the underlying mechanisms of ionic stresses-triggered responses in rice; (ii) comparative proteomics studies; and (iii) designing a novel strategy to improve crop plants.

        Neck circumference correlates with tumor size and Lateral Lymph node metastasis in men with small papillary thyroid carcinoma

        Background/Aims: Obesity is correlated with numerous diseases, including thyroid cancer, but the clinical significance of obesity with regard to the clinical characteristics of thyroid cancer remains unclear. Neck circumference is an index of upper-body adipose tissue distribution. Methods: In total, 401 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) measuring ≤ 2 cm were included. Neck circumference was measured horizontally at the level just below the thyroid cartilage on preoperative neck computed tomographic images. Results: Neck circumference correlated significantly with tumor size in men (p = 0.001) but not in women (p = 0.930). Body mass index (BMI) did not significantly correlate with tumor size in either sex. Neck circumference was significantly larger in men with lateral lymph node (LN) metastasis than in those without (p = 0.004). Neck circumference and BMI did not differ significantly in women according to other factors such as tumor size, multifocality, extrathyroid extension, and LN metastasis. Tumor size and the prevalence of lateral LN metastasis in men tended to increase in the middle/large neck circumference subgroup compared with those in the low neck circumference subgroup. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that neck circumference (p = 0.009) was a predictor for the presence of lateral LN metastasis in men. BMI was not a predictive factor for lateral LN involvement in either sex. Conclusions: Neck circumference, an indicator of central or visceral obesity but not BMI, may be associated with some prognostic factors in men with small PTC.

        Anti-fibrotic effects of L-2-oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid via modulation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 in rats

        L-2-Oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (OTC) is a cysteine prodrug that maintains glutathione in tissues. The present study was designed to investigate anti-fibrotic and anti-oxidative effects of OTC via modulation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in an in vivo thioacetamide (TAA)-induced hepatic fibrosis model. Treatment with OTC (80 or 160 mg/kg) improved serum liver function parameters and significantly ameliorated liver fibrosis. The OTC treatment groups exhibited significantly lower expression of α-smooth muscle actin, transforming growth factor-β1, and collagen α1 mRNA than that in the TAA model group. Furthermore, the OTC treatment groups showed a significant decrease in hepatic malondialdehyde level compared to that in the TAA model group. Nrf2 and heme oxygenase-1 expression increased significantly in the OTC treatment groups compared with that in the TAA model group. Taken together, these results suggest that OTC restores the anti- oxidative system by upregulating Nrf2; thus, ameliorating liver injury and a fibrotic reaction. [BMB Reports 2012; 45(6): 348-353]

        Expression Analysis of Oryza sativa Ascorbate Peroxidase 1 (OsAPx1) in Response to Different Phytohormones and Pathogens

        본 논문에서 벼 ascorbate peroxidase (OsAPx1) 유전자의 발현 분석을 Northern과 Western 분석을 통하여 유묘에서는 뿌리, 정단분열조직(shoot apical meristem, SAM), 잎 보다는 잎집에서 더 많이 발현되는 것을 확인하였다. 성숙된 조직에서는 OsAPx1 유전자가 잎을 제외하고는 뿌리, 줄기, 꽃에서 강하게 발현되었다. 또한 이 OsAPx1 유전자는 벼 곰팡이 병원균인 벼 도열병 및 세균성 병원균인 흰빛잎마름병에도 반응하였고 특히 흥미있게도 OsAPx1 유전자는 식물호르몬에 대해서 서로 다르게 발현 양상을 보였다. 이 유전자는 자스몬산(JA)에 대해서는 강한 발현을 보였지만 반대로 살리실산(SA) 및 ABA와 같이 처리된 세포에서는 강한 발현 억제를 보였다. 이는 이 유전자가 JA에는 반응하지만 SA와 ABA하고는 서로 길항작용을 하는 것으로 보인다. 근연관계분석을 통하여 OsAPx1유전자가 애기장대의 AtAPx1 와 거의 유사하여 AtAPx1 결손 라인을 가지고 표현형 조사를 실시하였다. 그 결과, 외부에서 H₂O₂를 처리하였을 때에 O₂<SUP>-</SUP> 와 H₂O₂의 축적이 wild type과 비교하여 AtAPx1 결손 라인에서는 현저히 높았다. 따라서 본 연구를, 통하여 OsAPx1 유전자는 벼에서 산화 환원 균형 유지를 통하여 다양한 세포 분화발달 및 병원균 방어에도 관여하며 이 유전자의 발현은 JA의 신호전달에 의해서 매개되는 것으로 예상이 된다. We have isolated and characterized an ascorbate peroxidase (APx) gene, OsAPx1 from rice. Northern and Western blot analyses indicated that at young seedling stage, OsAPx1 mRNA was expressed highly in root, shoot apical meristem (SAM) and leaf sheath than leaf. In mature plant, OsAPx1 gene expressed highly in root, stem and flower but weakly in leaf. OsAPx1 gene and protein expression level was induced in leaves inoculated with Magnaporthe oryzae (M. oryzae) and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). Phytohormones treatment showed that OsAPx1 was up-regulated by jasmonic acid (JA), but was down regulated by ABA and SA co-treatments with JA, resulting that they have antagonistic effect on pathogen responsive OsAPx1 expression. Phylogenetic analysis illustrated that Arabidopsis AtAPx1 has a close relationship with OsAPx1. In AtAPx1 knock out lines, the accumulation of O₂<SUP>-</SUP> and H₂O₂ are all highly detected than wild type, revealing that the high concentration of exogenous H₂O₂ cause the intercellular superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide accumulation in AtAPx1 knockout plant. These results suggested that OsAPx1 gene may be associated with the pathogen defense cascades as the mediator for balancing redox state by acting ROS scavenger and is associated with response to the pathogen defense via Jasmonic acid signaling pathway.

        화피, 석류피, 염부수백피 추출물의 항산화 및 항균 효과

        Objectives : This study was conducted to measure the antioxidative and antimicrobial activities of water- and ethanol-extracts from Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Punica granatum and Rhus javanica against various species of anaerobic bacteria. Methods : In order to evaluate the antioxidative and antimicrobial activities of water- and ethanol-extracts, DPPH radical scavenging and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities were measured in various species such as Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Propionibacterium acnes that induce skin inflammation. Also the total amount of phenol in each water- and ethanol-extract was measured to identify its role in the antioxidative and antimicrobial activities of water- and ethanol-extracts from Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Punica granatum and Rhus javanica. The antibacterial activity of the extracts was measured by confirming the lowest concentrations in disk diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) tests. Results : It was observed that RJE (Rhus javanica-EtOH extracts) show the highest content of total phenol. In addition, for RJE the total phenol content was higher from samples taken from domestic sources than from samples taken from foreign sources. DPPH radical scavenging activity was increased by treatment with PGE (Punica granatum-EtOH extracts), RJE and RJW (Rhus javanica-water extracts). It was observed that SOD-like activity was highest in the treatment with PGE. All of the extracts showed antimicrobial activity on S. epidermidis, S. aureus, P. acnes and E. coli, including those from Punica granatum, and it was noted that the activity was higher with RJE than with RJW. Conclusions : These results provide evidence that ethanol extracts of Punica granatum and Rhus javanica may have a beneficial role as antioxidants and antibiotics. Extracts from domestic samples of Betula platyphylla var japonica appeared to have a greater efficacy than extracts from foreign samples.

        소아 척수종양 24예의 임상분석(1973~1986) : Clinical Analysis of 24 Cases(1973~1986)

        The authors analyzed 24 cases of intraspinal tumors in children who had been operated upon at the Seoul National University Hospital from 1973 to 1986. The ratio of male to female was 2 : 1. The pathologic diagnosis revealed neurogenic tumor in 8 cases(33%), metastasis in 3 cases(13%), glioma in 3 cases(13%), lymphoma in 3 cases(33%), metastasis in 3 cases(13%), sarcoma in 3 cases(13%), and tumor of dysembryogenesis in 2 cases(8%). The tumors were located most frequently in the thoracolumbar area(7 cases, 29%) and in the epidural space(12 cases, 50%). Two thirds of the epidural tumors were malignant. The most common initial presentation was motor weakness(9 cases, 38%). Three cases(13%) presented with mass and one case(4%) with flexion deformity. On admission 9 cases(38%) were in the paraparetic stage, 6 cases(25%) in the radiculopathic stage, and 6 cases in the Brown-Sequard syndrome stage. The mean value of the CSF protein was 1, 108 mg%. Plain spine X-rays were abnormal in 17 cases(74%) and the increased interpedicular distance(11 cases, 48%) was the most common radiological abnormality. Myelographic studies were performed in 21 cases and all of them revealed abnormal findings. Total and gross total removal was possible in 13 cases(54%). Radiation therapy was done in 8 cases(33%) and chemotherapy in 5 cases(21%). The surgical result on discharge or at the postoperative one month was recovery in 7 cases(29%), improvement in 10 cases(42%), stationary state in 4 cases(17%), and progression in 3 cases(13%). After 20.8 months of mean follow-up duration in 20 cases(84%), the result was recovery in 13 cases(65%), improvement in 2 cases(10%), stationary state in one case(5%), and progression in cases(20%). As a major complication, there was a spinal deformity in 6 cases(29%) among 21 cases who did not have spinal deformity preoperatively. Three cases(13%) were followed up to their deaths. And the authors discussed the clinical features of the pediatric intraspinal tumors reported in the literature and the results of the present study.

      • Development of Molecular Markers for the Determination of the New Cultivar ‘Chunpoong’ in <i>Panax ginseng</i> C. A. M<small>EYER</small> Associated with a Major Latex-Like Protein Gene

        <P>Chunpoong is one of the most valuable cultivars of <I>Panax ginseng</I> C. A. M<SMALL>EYER</SMALL>, and is widely grown in Korea and China. Insertion/deletion (InDel) markers and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers are useful tools for marker-assisted selections. The SNP marker for determinate Chunpoong was previously developed from the <I>nad</I>7 gene of mtDNA by Wang <I>et al.</I> (2009) but was effective only on a limited range of cultivars. In this study, we studied the reasons for this limited application and developed new useful markers for application in Chunpoong-breeding programs. The new markers of InDel and SNP were designed in the major latex-like protein (MLP-like) gene which was highly expressed in 4-year-old Chunpoong expressed sequence tags (ESTs). To validate the marker in polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we used an InDel marker for identification of Chunpoong in the 70 <I>Panax</I> samples based on a double-blind test, and the success rate was 100%. For rapid and reliable assay of Chunpoong in numerous samples, we utilized an EvaGreen dye and melting curve method on real-time PCR. Furthermore, we designed an SNP marker that depended on the InDel region for more efficient detection of Chunpoong in real-time PCR. Compared with PCR-based assays, our Chunpoong SNP marker and real-time PCR assay offers a significant savings of time and labor in the analysis of large numbers of Chunpoong samples.</P>

        Physiological and Proteomics Analysis to Potassium Starvation in Rice

        BACKGROUND: Potassium (K) is one of the macronutrients which are essential for plant growth and development. Its deficiency in paddy soils is becoming one of the limiting factors for increasing rice yield in Asia. METHODS AND RESULTS: To investigate physiological symptoms under K-starvation (NP) compared with complete media (NPK) condition, we measured shoot/root length, weight, nutrients, and patterns of protein expression. The shoot growth was significantly reduced, but root growth was not affected by K-starvation. However, biomasses were decreased in both shoot and root. Uptake of K was reduced up to 85%, while total concentrations of P, Ca, Mg, Na were increased in root and shoot. To better understand the starved K mechanism of rice, comparative proteome analysis for proteins isolated from rice leaves was conducted using 2-DGE. Five spots of differentially expressed proteins were analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS. Analysis of these K-starvation response proteins suggested that they were involved in metabolism and defense. CONCLUSION(s): Physiological and 2-DGE based proteomics approach used in our study results in observation of morphology or nutrients change and identification of K-starvation responsive proteins in rice root. These results have important roles in maintaining nutrient homeostasis and would also be useful for further characterization of protein function in plant K nutrition.
