Abstract For electron impact excitation processes of hydrogen atom from the ground state a relationship between the direct and the exchange amplitude is obtained. Within the frame work of the distorted wave approximation, the Coulomb wave is further approximated by the corresponding plane wave, while the ground state wave function is properly parametrized. Thus both scattering amplitudes are evaluated from a single expressioon by varying parameters. The use of the generating function of the Laguerre polynomials enables us to deal with the various excitation processes via a single integrated expression for 1s→2s, 1s→2pm, 1s→3s processes. Their amplitudes and their total cross sections are obtained and compared with the previous results.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the patterns of the health related variables, and physical characteristics and physical fitness of the elderly people in order to provide a exercise program. The data about the health related variables were collected through the personal interview, and the data about physical charateristics and physical fitness (height, weight, % body fat, blood pressure, pulse rate, grip stength, trunk flexion, side step test, 2 min, harvard step test) of 373 elderly people living Seoul and kyungkee area were collected. The conclusions of this study can be summarized as follow; 1. The test results about smoking, drinking, sleeping and self-evaluation of health revealed that the elderly people have self-confidence about their health. 2. Not many elderly people participate the proper exercise program even though they recognize the need of exercise. 3. The results showed that the elderly people do not pay much attention to the intensity of the exercise. 4. Muscle strength training for leg and the lower back and cardio-vascular endurance training was recommended to reduce the risk of varius problems caused by aging. 5. A exercise program was suggested for the elderly people.

주암호 상수원 상류지역에 위치한 복내 바이오파크 인공습지의 수생태학적 효율 향상을 위한 관리 방안을 제시하기 위하여 시기별, 계절별 및 오염물질 부하량별 수처리 효율을 평가하였다. 유입원수의 BOD, SS, T-N 및 T-P의 함량은 각각 1.87-4.23, 5.2-24.0, 4.94-15.59 및 0.10-0.75 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP> 범위이었으며, 연평균 처리효율은 BOD, SS,T-N 및 T-P가 각각 26, 43, 62 및 83%로서 BOD 처리효율은 낮았으나 T-N과 T-P 처리효율은 매우 높았다. 계절별 수처리 효율은 전반적으로 동절기에 비하여 하절기에 높았으며 T-P의 처리효율은 계절적인 차이 없이 비교적 일정하게 높은 처리효율을 보였다. 인공습지 구성시스템별 오염물질 부하량에 따른 오염물질 처리량은 BOD는 침강지> 습지조 > 마이크로폴, T-N과 SS는 습지조 > 침강지 >마이크로폴 순이었으며 T-P의 경우에는 습지 구성 시스템별 큰 차이 없이 비교적 일정한 처리량을 보였다. Boknae Bio-park is a free water surface constructed wetlands to remove non-point source pollution. Boknae Bio-park constructed wetlands (CWs) consist of forebay, wetlands (1<SUP>st</SUP>, 2<SUP>nd</SUP>, and 3<SUP>rd</SUP> wetlands), and micropool. The concentrations of BOD, SS, T-N and T-P in inflow were 1.87-4.23, 5.2-24.0, 4.94-15.59 and 0.10-0.75 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP> in Boknae Bio-park CWs from April to December in 2008, respectively. The removal rates of BOD, SS, T-N and T-P in Boknae Bio-park CWs were 26, 43, 62 and 83%, respectively. The removal rates of BOD and SS in the spring and summer were higher than those in other seasons. The removal rates of T-N and T-P on spring were slightly higher than those in other seasons. The amounts of pollutants removal in Boknae Bio-park CWs were higher in the order of forebay > wetlands > micropool for BOD, wetlands > forebay > micropool for SS and wetlands > forebay > micropool for T-N. The amount of T-P removal was not significant different in all areas.
NOVEL PSEUDOCERAMIDES AND THEIR SYNTHESIS USING ALKYL KETENE DIMER

Nowadays, ceramides have been found to be an important component in the outermost layer of the skin - the stratum corneum (SC). It is understood that ceramides play an important role in structure and maintenance of the intercellular lipid lamella structure in the SC layer. Thus, many efforts have been made by the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries to get human skin-identical ceramides or pseudoceramides which show similar performance with natural ceramides. The purpose of our study was to synthesize new pseudoceramides via an effective and economical synthetic pathway and to show their performance of skin restoration. Four kinds of the new pseudoceramides (PC-4, PC-4R, PC-5, PC-5R) were synthesized by the reaction of alcoholic amine and alkyl ketene dimer. First of all, PC-4 and PC-5 were synthesized by the reaction of 3-amino-1,2-propandiol and serinol with alkyl ketene dimer respectively. After that, PC-4R and PC-5R were produced by changing ketone group at β-position to amide bond of above synthesized PC-4 and PC-5 into hydroxyl group using NaBH₄ respectively. Their expected structures were conformed by the NMR, IR spectra, and elemental analysis.
Genetically Diverse Group C Rotaviruses Cause Sporadic Infection in Korean Calves

<P>This study examined the prevalence and genetic diversity of the bovine group C rotaviruses (GCRVs) in a total of 127 diarrhea fecal samples of calves from 52 Korean native beef calf herds using RT-PCR and nested PCR. Overall, seven of the 127 fecal samples (5.5%) from seven of the 52 herds (13.5%) tested positive for bovine GCRVs only by nested PCR. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses of a partial VP6 gene showed that Korean bovine GCRVs had marked genetic diversity; two Korean strains belonged to the bovine lineage, whereas five Korean strains belonged to the porcine lineage. These results suggest that the genetically diverse bovine GCRVs cause sporadic infections in diarrheic calves in South Korea.</P>
Synthesis of nanoporous material from zeolite USY and catalytic application to bio-oil conversion.

<P>A highly ordered nanoporous aluminosilicate (MMZ(USY)) was synthesized using commercially available zeolite USY as the framework source and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as the template. The aluminosilicate was characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption, ICP-AES and TPD. The catalytic performance of the MMZ(USY) material in the conversion of bio-oil was compared with that of Al-MCM-41, which was synthesized using a direct sol-gel method. The highly accessible nanopores, hydrothermal stability and the intermediate acidic properties of MMZ(USY) correlated with the catalytic performance in the conversion of the bio-oil. The MMZ(USY) used in this study showed excellent activity, selectivity and stability for the production of desirable organic compounds, such as phenolics, with a high degree of deoxygenation.</P>
Molecular Identification of Adoxophyes orana complex (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in Korea and Japan

Species identification in the Adoxophyes orana complex has historically posed a problem, due to marked morphological similarities among the members. Although pheromonal studies have often been suggested as a better indicator for ecological distinctions among species than morphological similarities, no molecular proof has yet been provided in this regard. Here, we have sequenced the COI barcoding region (<TEX>${\sim}660\;bp$</TEX>) as well as another COI region (<TEX>${\sim}940\;bp$</TEX>) and 18S rDNA <TEX>$(\sim(\sim1820\;bp)$</TEX> for species in Korea and Japan. We determined that the specimens recently collected in Korea were A. orana, which is identical to the Japanese A. orana fasciata; the Korean A. honmai is identical to the Japanese A. honmai; the Korean Adoxophyes sp., which has previously been identified as A. orana in Korea, is not actually A. orana but a third, possibly new, species; and the Japanese A. dubia is identical to A. honmai in Japan and A. honmai in Korea. p-distances among the species and their phylogenetic trees are also provided herein.
A Single Center`s 30 Years` Experience of Esophageal Adenocarcinoma

N/A Background: Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus has been reported to be increasing in incidence in a number of regions throughout the world, while the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma (SCCA) of the esophagus is mostly stable or decreasing. To evaluate the increasing tendency of adenocarcinoma of the Methods: we studied retrospectively the records of patients with histologically proven esophageal cancer between 1970 and 1999 at the Yonsei Medical Center. Results: Total cases of esophageal cancer were 969 patients of which the cases of adenocarcinoma and SCCA were 27 patients and 918 patients, respectively. The ratio of esophageal adenocarcinoma to SCCA was 0.0375 in the 1970s, 0.0241 in the 1980s and 0.0292 in the 1990s. There was no statistical difference (p=0.811) in the ratios of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus between the three consecutive 10-yeargroups. Conclusion: In conclusion, unlike the US and other western countries, it seems that the ratio of esophageal adenocarcinoma compared to SCCA has not increased among patients with esophageal carcinoma at the Yonsei Medical Center.

Background/Aims: Microscopic colitis is characterized by chronic watery diarrhea with specific pathological changes that can be diagnosed by microscopic examination. We performed immunohistochemical analysis of proinflammatory cytokines to investigate the pathogenic mechanism of microscopic colitis. Methods: This study consisted of six patients with lymphocytic colitis, six patients with collagenous colitis, and six patients with functional diarrhea but normal pathology. We performed an immunohistochemical analysis of the colonic mucosal biopsies to assess the expression of cyclo-oxygenase-2, interleukin-17, nuclear factor-κB, interferon-γ, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and tumor necrosis factor-α. We compared the quantity score of immunohistochemical staining among the groups. Results: The microscopic colitis group showed significantly higher expression of cyclo-oxygenase-2, interleukin-17, nuclear factor-κB, and interferon-γ compared with the control group. Cytokine expression was similar between collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis. However, the expression of cyclo-oxygenase-2 was higher in collagenous colitis. Conclusions: Proinflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-17 and interferon-γ, are highly expressed in microscopic colitis. The expression of cyclo-oxygenase-2 was higher in collagenous colitis than in lymphocytic colitis. This study is the first on interleukin-17 expression in microscopic colitis patients.
