        Adsorption and thermodynamic mechanisms of manganese removal from aqueous media by biowaste-derived biochars

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In the present investigation, poultry manure and farmyard manure-derived biochars were applied as cost-effective adsorbents for manganese (Mn) removal from aqueous media. Effects of functional parameters such as solution pH, contact time, temperature and concentration on the Mn removal efficiency of biochars were evaluated. Poultry manure-derived biochar exhibited greater adsorption efficiency than farmyard manure-derived biochar due to its porosity and surface functionality. The maximum adsorption was achieved at pH 6, temperature 298 K and contact time of 3 h. The adsorption isotherm data was well fitted to the Freundlich model indicating multilayer adsorption onto heterogeneous surfaces of the biochars. Thermodynamics calculations affirmed that Mn adsorption onto biochars was spontaneous and exothermic process governed by hydrogen bonding type of electrostatic interaction.       • The PPARδ Agonist GW501516 Improves Lipolytic/Lipogenic Balance through CPT1 and PEPCK during the Development of Pre-Implantation Bovine Embryos

        <P>The PPARs (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors) play critical roles in the regulation of lipid and glucose metabolism. PPARδ, a member of the PPARs family, is associated with decreased susceptibility to ectopic lipid deposition and is implicated in the regulation of mitochondrial processes. The current study aimed to determine the role of PPARδ in fatty acid β-oxidation and its influence on PEPCK for the lipogenic/lipolytic balance during in vitro bovine oocyte maturation and embryo development. Activation of PPARδ by GW501516, but not 2-BP, was indicated by intact embryonic PEPCK (cytosolic) and CPT1 expression and the balance between free fatty acids and mitochondrial β-oxidation that reduced ROS and inhibited p-NF-κB nuclear localization. Genes involved in lipolysis, fatty acid oxidation, and apoptosis showed significant differences after the GW501516 treatment relative to the control- and 2-BP-treated embryos. GSK3787 reversed the PPARδ-induced effects by reducing PEPCK and CPT1 expression and the mitochondrial membrane potential, revealing the importance of PPARδ/PEPCK and PPARδ/CPT1 for controlling lipolysis during embryo development. In conclusion, GW501516-activated PPARδ maintained the correlation between lipolysis and lipogenesis by enhancing PEPCK and CPT1 to improve bovine embryo quality.</P>

      • On the oxidation state of 'Fe' in LaFe<sub>1-x</sub>Ni<sub>x</sub>O<sub>3</sub>

        The electrical and magnetic properties of rare earth orthoferrites are strongly dependent upon the electronic structure of Fe cations. This study investigates the electronic structure of Fe as a function of composition in LaFe<SUB>1-x</SUB>Ni<SUB>x</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> using Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy at room temperature. Analysis of the Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectra indicates the presence of Fe<SUP>3+</SUP> and Fe<SUP>4+</SUP> in LaFe<SUB>1-x</SUB>Ni<SUB>x</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>. The concentration of Fe<SUP>4+</SUP> increases with increasing Ni content in LaFe<SUB>1-x</SUB>Ni<SUB>x</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>. Variations in the oxidation state of Fe have been correlated to those in the electrical and magnetic characteristics of LaFe<SUB>1-x</SUB>Ni<SUB>x</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>.

        The Imminent Sign of SVC Syndrome Secondary to Retrosternal Goiter

        We present a case of retrosternal goiter with dilated external jugular veins which points to retrosternal extension. This case highlights the importance of clinical examination even in this era of imaging since vital clues can be elicited. This case also emphasizes the fact that some clinical signs and manoeuvres may be uncomfortable and can result in distress to the patient and one such sign is Permberton’s sign and better avoided during clinical examination.

        Outcomes of Non-Operative Treatment for Duodenal Stump Leakage after Gastrectomy in Patients with Gastric Cancer

        Purpose: We evaluated the clinical outcomes of the non-operative management of post-gastrectomy duodenal stump leakage in patients with gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: A total of 1,230 patients underwent gastrectomy at our institution between 2010 and 2014. Duodenal stump leakage was diagnosed in 19 patients (1.5%), and these patients were included in this study. The management options varied with patient condition; patients were managed conservatively, with a pigtail catheter drain, or by tube duodenostomy via a Foley catheter. The patients’ clinical outcomes were analyzed. Results: Duodenal stump leakage was diagnosed in all 19 patients within a median of 10 days (range, 1~20 days). The conservative group comprised of 5 patients (26.3%), the pigtail catheter group of 11 patients (57.9%), and the Foley catheter group of 3 patients (15.8%). All 3 management modalities were successful; none of the patients needed further operative intervention. The median hospital stay was 18, 33, and 42 days, respectively. Conclusions: Non-operative management of duodenal stump leakage for selected groups of patients with gastric cancer was effective for control of intra-abdominal sepsis. This management modality can help obviate the need for surgical intervention.

        Entropy Generation Minimization in MHD Boundary Layer Flow over a Slendering Stretching Sheet in the Presence of Frictional and Joule Heating

        In the present paper, we study the entropy analysis of boundary layer ow over a slender stretching sheet under the action of a non uniform magnetic field that is acting perpendicular to the ow direction. The effects of viscous dissipation and Joule heating are included in the energy equation. Using similarity transformation technique the momentum and thermal boundary layer equations to a system of nonlinear differential equations. Numerical solutions are obtained using the shooting and fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The expressions for the entropy generation number and Bejan number are also obtained using a suggested similarity transformation. The main objective of this article is to investigate the effects of different governing parameters such as the magnetic parameter (M2), Prandtl number (Pr), Eckert number (Ec), velocity index parameter (m), wall thickness parameter (ff), temperature difference parameter ( ), entropy generation number (Ns) and Bejan number (Be). All these effects are portrayed graphically and discussed in detail. The analysis reveals that entropy generation reduces with decreasing wall thickness parameter and increasing temperature difference between the stretching sheet and the uid outside the boundary layer. The viscous and magnetic irreversibilities are dominant in the vicinity of the stretching surface.

        Role of holes states on metal to insulator transition and collapse of magnetic ordering in LaFe1- xNixO3 (x = 0.0-0.5)

        Polycrystalline LaFe1-xNixO3 (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5) have been prepared by the standard solid state reactions method. The phase formation has been confirmed by the powerful synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment. In order to investigate the effects of Ni doping on the oxidation state, spin state and the magnetic ordering of the iron cations, 57Fe Mössbauer Spectroscopy has been carried out at room temperature. Iron is present as Fe3+ in high spin state in LaFeO3. Ni doping has no effect on the spin state of the Fe3+ cations. However, a progressive increase in the concentration of Fe4+ cations has been inferred. Relatively stronger covalent character of the Fe4+þ eO-2 bond causes a progressive collapse in the magnetic ordering and delocalization of the hole states.

      • Leu432Val Polymorphism of CYP1B1 is Not Associated with Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Esophagus - a Case-Control Study from Kashmir, India

        Background: Individual susceptibility to cancer has been attributed to polymorphisms in xenobiotic metabolizing genes. To evaluate the association of the Leu432Val polymorphism of cytochrome P4501B1 (CYP1B1) with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), we conducted a case control study in Kashmir, India, an area with a relatively high incidence of ESCC. Materials and Methods: We recruited 404 histopathologically confirmed ESCC cases, and an equal number of controls, individually matched for sex, age and district of residence to respective cases. Information was obtained on various dietary, lifestyle and environmental factors in face to face interviews, using a structured questionnaire, from each subject. Genotypes were analysed by polymerase chain reaction, restriction fragment length polymorphism and sequencing of randomly selected samples. Conditional logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Results: Among the three possible variants, we did not find any Leu432Leu genotype of CYP1B1 in the study population and the genotypic distribution of Val432Val and Leu432Val carriers was nearly equal in both cases (89.6% and 10.4%) and controls (88.9% and 11.1%) respectively. We did not find any risk associated with this polymorphism in the current study (OR = 0.64; 95% CI: 0.55 - 1.64). Conclusions: The study indicates that (Leu432Val) polymorphism of CYP1B1, is not associated with ESCC risk. However, replicative studies with larger sample size are needed to substantiate the findings.

      • SHP2 is Indispensable for growth factors signal transduction during bovine oocyte maturation and blastocyst development

        The aim of this study was to investigate the role of Src homology 2-containing phosphotyrosine phosphatase SHP2 in intricate signaling network invoked by oocyte to achieve cytoplasmic maturation and also blastocyst development. Activation of SHP2 regulates multicellular differentiation, proliferation and survival through numerous signal pathways. The most prominent pathway is RAS/PI3K and p-AKT signaling cascade, as a result mitogenic effect become enhanced. Oocytes were cultured in cisplatin an anticancer drug, but selective activator of SHP2 and our grouping were SOF medium alone, SOF + EGF, SOF + CISPLATIN 0.3 μM, and SOF + EGF + CISPLATIN 0.3 μM. We evaluated that EGF neutralizes the apoptotic effect of cisplatin as well as maintain the high expression of SHP2, as a result blastocyst development become boosted up. We also found that inhibition of SHP2 with its specific inhibitor PHPS1 5 μM decreases the blastocyst development and neutralizes growth factors effect. The developmental ability and quality of bovine embryos were determined by assessing their cell number, gene expression, immunofluorescence, and immunoblot. The differences in embryo development between experimental groups were analyzed by one-way ANOVA. Our results show that SHP2 have significant effect on MAP kinase pathways which expand the cumulus cells during oocyte maturation and blastocyst development as compare to inhibition of SHP2 with PHPS1. SHP2 not only transduce the signaling of epidermal growth factor but it also has a role in signal transduction of FGF and IGF. The expression of ERK, PI3K/p-AKT and mTOR was increased with EGF, but with the treatment of SHP2 inhibitor the expression of these genes become drop done. So we can conclude from these results that SHP2 is important for oocyte maturation as well as for blastocyst development.
