        This study was conducted to measure and compare the salivary cotinine concentration between smokers and nonsmokers, and to investigate the effect on the exposure to environmental tobacco smoke(ETS) with housewives, living on an apartment of Korea. Saliva samples were taken from all volunteers and salivary cotinine was analyzed by a developed radioimmunoassay(RIA) method. The median salivary cotinine levels were 52.8±12.6 ng/ml and 44.6± 9.7 ng/ml in male smokers and in female ones, respectively, and they were 4.3±2.1 ng/ml and 2.9±3.1 ng/ml in male nonsmokers and in female ones, respectively. In addition, average salivary cotinine levels were 3.8±2.7 ng/ml in housewives from smoking homes and 2.4±2.4ng/ml in ones from nonsmoking homes. Results obtained from the analysis of salivary cotinine demonstrate that smokers had a significantly higher concentration of salivary cotinine than nonsmoker. But, there was no significant difference in the salivary cotinine concentration for housewives living in apartment between with smoking husband and with nonsmoking husband.

      • 발파진동 제어에 의한 특수구간 터널굴착에 관한 연구

        It was difficult to apply conventional excavation methods in some sections from Seoul to Pusan high speed rail road construction of 1 lot 2, due to highway concrete road. gas pipe, water pipe and nearby factories with automatic control system machine. To excavate safely and efficiently in these sections new blast patterns were employed within allowable blast vibration level, by test blast and controlled vibration by sequential blast. Behaviors of the rock mass including convergence and displacement around tunnel were measured with construction works and the crack width in concrete wall also monitored for controlling allowable limits. The results can be summarized as follow : 1. The allowable blast vibration level in structure site is less 1.0cm/sec for highway concrete, 0.5 cm/sec for gas pipe, water pipe and building housing and 0.3 cm/sec for automatic control system machine. 2. The convergence displacement, sing rod extensometer and multi rod extensometer around tunnel and cracks in concrete wall were measured, it was confirmed that the measured values were converged within allowable level. 3. The empirical formular of ground vibrations with 90% confidence lines for PD-3 was given as follow. V_90%=45.549(??)^-1.353

        환경농업에 대한 인식과 태도 : 수도권 9개 생활협동조합의 사례 Focused on 9 Consumer and Life Cooperatives in the Metropolitan Area

        With emphasis on environmentally safe and sustainable and economically sound and oriented to consumer, this study intends to assess the consumer's cognition and attitudes for safe food distribution, to investigate the supplying system of the organic farm products, to survey the consumer and life cooperatives dealing with organic farm products, and to draw some implications toward environment and consumer-oriented agriculture. Related literatures and available documents were reviewed to conceptualize the environmental-and consumer-oriented agriculture and consumer and life cooperatives, to grasp the nationwide status of such alternative agriculture and consumer cooperatives, and investigate the consumers' cognition and attitude. In order to investigate the consumers' needs for organic farm products and to grasp the active consumer and life cooperatives dealing with organic farm products, questionnaire method and non-structured interview were applied. The environment-and consumer-oriented agriculture refers hero to the farming system in which any farm food and other living products giving no harm to human and livestock health and catering the consumers' need. The consumer and life cooperatives is consumer's group buying and selling organic farm products organized in the cooperative system with which any consumer can be affiliated to buy organic farm p개ducts safely and reasonably.

        This paper deal with a method of detecting localized defects on taper roller bearing in main spindle of machine tool system. The statistical parameters in time-domain signal processing techniques have been calculated to extract useful features from bearing vibration signals. Emloying these features, the statiscical parameters have been established to detect defects on the rollers of bearings, respectively, and used by the input feature of an artificial neural nerwork. As a result that the proposed bearing defects monitoring system could be successfully performed by using the statistical parameters of acceleration signals.

        Age-related Increase of Sister Chromatid Exchange Frequency in Bone Marrow Cells of Senescence Accelerated Mouse and Its Inhibition by Chronic Treatment of Ginseng

        Age-related change in the frequency of spontaneous sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and chromosornal aberrations were investigated in bone marrow cells of accelerated senescence-resistant mice (SAM R1) and senescence accelerated ones (SAM P1). And the effect of chronic treatment of ginseng extract (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) on these chromosomal abnormalities was tested in SAM P1. SCE frequency in the cells was progressively increased with age in both mice, but it was consistently higher in SAM P1 than in SAM R1 at all corresponding age. Chromosomal aberrations were, however, not significantly changed with age except that it was slightly increased in only aged SAM P1. Interestingly, the rate of these genetic instabilities in SAM P1 was remarkably retarded by long-term administration of ginseng water extract (0.05% in drinking water). These results suggest that frequency of spontaneous SCE in bone marrow cells increase in parallel with senescence of the mice, and SAM P1 is in the condition of being more exposed than SAM R1 to DNA damaging factors. These also indicate that long-term treatment of ginseng may reduce the genetic damage.

        Characteristics of Recurrence in Patients with Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy and Myopic Choroidal Neovascularization

        Purpose: To investigate the characteristics of recurrence in patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and myopic choroidal neovascularization (CNV). Methods: In total, 72 eyes from 70 patients with PCV and 51 eyes from 49 patients with myopic CNV were included. PCV and myopic CNV patients were followed up with a pro-re-nata regimen after three monthly injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor and underwent spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Changes in visual acuity and SD-OCT findings of macular lesions after recurrence were analyzed. Results: We observed a significant difference in recurrence of PCV (59.7%) and myopic CNV (35.3%) during the follow-up period (p = 0.008). With the first recurrence, we observed higher levels of subretinal fluid (SRF) in patients with PCV (93.0%) than myopic CNV (22.2%; p < 0.001). In addition, we observed more subretinal hyperreflective lesions with blurred margins on SD-OCT for patients with myopic CNV (88.9%) than with PCV (18.6%; p < 0.001). Changes in central macular thickness (CMT) following recurrence were greater for patients in the PCV group than in the myopic CNV group (p = 0.024). However, visual acuity was lower in patients with myopic CNV than with PCV (p = 0.001). Conclusions: We observed a greater number of new SRF than subretinal hemorrhage in patients with recurrent PCV, whereas a subretinal hyperreflective lesion with a blurred margin was a major finding in patients with myopic CNV. Myopic CNV patients experienced a greater decrease in visual acuity at recurrence than PCV patients despite minimal changes in CMT.

        A two-step synthesis process of thermoelectric alloys for the separate control of carrier density and mobility

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>It is challenging to improve the thermoelectric figure-of-merit as its constituent terms such as Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity, are inter-related in the way that the enhancement of one term leads to the degradation of others. Therefore, it is highly desirable to design a new synthesis process that allows us to independently control these terms. Here, we report a simple, two-step process combining spark plasma sintering (SPS) and post-annealing (PA) to separately control the carrier density and mobility in the p-type (Bi<SUB>0.2</SUB>Sb<SUB>0.8</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>Te<SUB>3</SUB>. High-temperature SPS enables enhancing the carrier mobility by reducing scattering sites such as grain boundaries. Then, the following PA at a lower temperature allows tailoring the carrier density without the degradation of mobility. Beyond bismuth telluride-based, room-temperature thermoelectric materials, we believe that our result will provide an insight for the performance enhancement of other thermoelectric materials such as oxide and skutterudite.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A two-step process is proposed to separately control the carrier density and the mobility. </LI> <LI> High-temperature spark plasma sintering is used to enhance the carrier mobility. </LI> <LI> The following low-temperature post-annealing can optimize the carrier density. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Effect of spark plasma sintering conditions on the thermoelectric properties of (Bi<sub>0.25</sub>Sb<sub>0.75</sub>)<sub>2</sub>Te<sub>3</sub> alloys

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>As a field-assisted technique, spark plasma sintering (SPS) enables densification of specimens in a very short period of time compared to other sintering techniques. For high performance thermoelectric material synthesis, SPS is widely used to fabricate nanograin-structured thermoelectric materials by rapidly densifying the nanopowders suppressing grain growth. However, the microstructural evolution behavior of thermoelectric materials by SPS, another important process during sintering, has been rarely studied. Here, we explore SPS as a tool to control the microstructure by long-time SPS. Using p-type (Bi<SUB>0.25</SUB>Sb<SUB>0.75</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>Te<SUB>3</SUB> thermoelectric materials as a model system, we systematically vary SPS temperature and time to understand the correlations between SPS conditions, microstructural evolution, and the thermoelectric properties. Our results show that the relatively low eutectic temperature (∼420 °C) and the existence of volatile tellurium (Te) are critical factors to determine both microstructure and thermoelectric property. In the liquid-phase sintering regime, rapid evaporation of Te leads to a strong dependence of thermoelectric property on SPS time. On the other hand, in the solid-phase sintering regime, there is a weak dependence on SPS time. The optimum thermoelectric figure-of-merit (Z) of 2.93 × 10<SUP>−3</SUP>/K is achieved by SPS at 500 °C for 30 min.
