Human sparganosois was reported more than 100 cases in Korean population. However no case reported yet in Korea as a patient was infected by sparganum from other geographical area, such as Thailand. The case we are reported here is a 38 year-old Korean male who had been suffered from mass being a small, round and soft consistance in upper portion of his right thigh. The patients stated that he had an opportunity to eat living snake in Bangkok, Thailand during trip. As therapy praziquantel (75㎎/㎏/day) was given p.o. for 14 days, but in vain to cure. Following medical treatment, surgical exicision was performed to remove a alive, soft, whitish-milky, mobile and elongated sparganum. Serlogical test by micro-ELISA for sparganum-specific antibody revealed a high serum antibody level of absorbance 0.67 (positive criterion: absorbance 0.22).

Cimetidine is a well-tolerated H₂-receptor antagonist widely used in the treatment of gastrodudenal diseases and allergic reactions such as urticaria. Numerous adverse reactions have been attributed to cimetidine, which is understandable in view of the attention and scrutiny the drug has received, its widespread use, and its systemic effects. The incidence of general side effects is less than 2%. The drug has caused an array of central nervous system disturbances, gynecomastia, and rarely hepatotoxicity, interstitial nephrities, bradycardia, hypotension, and even cardiac arrest. Cardiovascular side effects are extremely rare and have occurred during rapid intravenous injection. We report a case of anaphylactic shock after rapid intravenous injection of cimetidine.

Cancer-preventive effects of ethanol extract of elm tree root (EEE) were investigated. In the in vitro cytotoxicity assay, colon cancer cells were incubated with a chloroform fraction of EEE (CF-EEE). CF-EEE significantly inhibited the proliferation of cells and induced apoptotic cell death in a dose-dependent manner. For the assessment of chemopreventive efficacy in vivo, male F344 rats were fed with EEE (0.5 or 1%) in diet for 8 weeks, and were subcutaneously injected with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) to induce colonic aberrant crypt foci (ACF). EEE (0.5 and 1%) significantly decreased both the numbers of AC (1191.1/colon) and ACF (529.3/colon) induced by DMH. In addition, in the Western blot analysis on the colonic mucosa, administration of EEE triggered expression of caspase-3, a key factor of an apoptotic cascade. These results suggest that extract of elm tree root may have potential chemopreventive principles that lead to apoptosis of cancer cells, and thereby suppress colorectal carcinogenesis during the initiation stage.

The ZnO(zinc oxide) thin film sensors were manufactured by RF magnetron sputtering method and added up to 4 wt. % Al_(2)O_(3), 1 wt. % TiO_(2) and 0.2 wt. % V_(2)O_(5) on the basis of ZnO material for developing the high sensitive gas sensors which have practically moderate resistivity and the stability. They were also grown on heated SiO_(2)/Si substrates of 250 ℃ at a pressure of about 10 mTorr in the pure oxygon gas with a power of about 80 watts for 10 minutes. To manufacture the thin film of the more stable high sensitivity, the thin films were also annealed from 400 ℃ to 800 ℃ and the thin films which were annealed with 700℃ for 60 minutes in the pure oxygon gas exhibited a good properties. The thin film grown in this conditions exhibited the sensitivity of maximum 550 in TMA gas concentration 160 pμm and exhibited a good stability and excellent linearity.
응급실로 내원한 3세 이하 소아의 급성 충수염의 임상적 특성

Background: In younger children, early diagnosis of acute appendicitis can be difficult because patients may not be able to provide a good history of their symptoms and the etiologies of the abdominal pain is often unclear. Therefore, the diagnosis is may be delayed and may be made after perforation has occurred. Methods: The cases of 20 children of 3 years of age or less who underwent appendectomies due to appendicitis from January 1995 to March 2000 were retrospectively reviewed. Data were gathered including seasonal variation, gender, mean age, presenting signs and symptoms, physical signs, diagnostic methods, WBC counts, postoperative complications and length of postoperative hospital stay. Results: The male-to-female ratio was 1.5:1. Fifteen cases were diagnosed after perforation had occurred, and 5 cases were nonperforated. The mean age was 29.6(±5.5) months; 60% were males(12/20). The most common presenting symptom was abdominal pain(95%). The most common signs was abdominal tenderness; especially, muscle guarding was more common in the perforated group(100% vs. 0%). The mean duration of symptoms prior to visiting the ED and the average length of hospital stay were 4.4 days and 10.1 days in the perforated group and 2.2 days and 4.2 days in the nonperforated group, retrospectively. Conclusion: In children of 3 years of age or less, when abdominal pain is persistent without response to conservative treatment and there is associated abdominal tenderness, appendicitis must be considered. especially, when there are fever, diarrhea and muscle guarding, perforated appendicitis must be considered.

Background In this study, we aimed to compare repeated resection and radiation treatment, such as Gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) or conventional radiotherapy (RT), and investigate the factors in-fluencing treatment outcome, including overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and complication rates. Methods We retrospectively reviewed 67 cases of recurred intracranial meningiomas (repeated resection: 36 cases, radiation treatment: 31 cases) with 56 months of the median follow-up duration (range, 13-294 months). Results The incidence of death rate was 29.9% over follow-up period after treatment for re-curred meningiomas (20/67). As independent predictable factors for OS, benign pathology [hazard ratio (HR) 0.132, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.048-0.362, p<0.001] and tumor size <3 cm (HR 0.167, 95% CI 0.061-0.452, p<0.001) were significantly associated with a longer OS. The incidence of pro-gression rate was 23.9% (16/67). Only treatment modality was important for PFS as an independent predictable factor (GKRS/RT vs. open resection; HR 0.117, 95% CI 0.027-0.518, p<0.005). The com-plication rate was 14.9% in our study (10/67). Larger tumor size (≥3 cm, HR 0.060, 95% CI 0.007- 0.509, p=0.010) was significant as an independent prognostic factor for development of complications. Although treatment modality was not included for multivariate analysis, it should be considered as a predictable factor for complications (p=0.001 in univariate analysis). Conclusion The role of repeated resection is questionable for recurred intracranial meningiomas, considering high progression and complication rates. Frequent and regular imaging follow-up is re-quired to detect recurred tumor sized as small as possible, and radiation treatment can be a preferred treatment.

The present study was aimed to explore the role of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves in the regulation of sodium transporters and water channels in the salivary gland. Rats were denervated of their sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves to the submandibular gland, and the glandular expression of sodium transporters and water channels was determined by Western blot analysis. The expression of either α1 or β1 subunit of Na, K-ATPase was not significantly affected either by the sympathetic or by the parasympathetic denervation. The expression of subunits of epithelial sodium channels was significantly increased both in the denervated and contralateral glands either by the sympathetic or by the parasympathetic denervation. Neither the sympathetic nor the parasympathetic denervation significantly altered the expression of aquaporin-1 (AQP1). Nor was the expression of AQP4 affected significantly by the parasympathetic or the sympathetic denervation. On the contrary, the expression of AQP5 was significantly increased not only by the parasympathetic but also by the sympathetic denervation. These results suggest that sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves have tonic regulatory effects on the regulation of certain sodium transporters and AQP water channels in the salivary gland.
Anxiolytic and Antidepressant Activities of Ginsenoside Rb1

The psychopharmacological profile of ginsenosides has not yet been confirmed systematically although various neuropharmacological activities associated with them have been investigated. In the present study, the psychological activities of Rb1 were investigated to evaluate whether it can be used in treatment or prevention of psychological disorders. Rb1 was intravenously injected at doses of 0.2, 2, 5 and 10 mg/kg. The effects of Rb1 on the CI- ion influx were investigated using IMR-32 human neuroblastoma cells. Moreover, locomotor activity, forced swimming activity, activity on rotating rod and activity in elevated plus-maze were tested in mice. Rb1 increased the CI- influx into the intracell region in a dose-dependent manner. Rb1 did not cause change in behavior in total open field when locomotor activity was tested, however it increased activities, especially, such as rearing frequency in center area. Administration of Rb1 at 0.2 mg/kg significantly reduced activities on rotating rod however administration at high dosages had no effect on them. Rb1 administration decreased animal immobile time in a water chamber in a dose dependent manner, and increased the strong mobile time of animals. In conclusion, the present results demonstrate that Rb1 contributes to the psychopharmacological effects of ginseng and may be used in treatment or prevention of psychological disorders such as anxiety or depression.
