Physical properties of sputtered YSZ thin film electrolytes on anode thin film by spray pyrolisis has been investigated to realize the porous electrode and dense electrolyte multilayer structure for micro solid oxide fuel cells. It is shown that for better crystallinity and density, YSZ need to be deposited at an elevated temperature. However, if pure NiO anode was used for high temperature deposition, massive defects such as spalling and delamination were induced due to high thermal expansion mismatch. By changing anode to NiOCGO composite, defects were significantly reduced even at high deposition temperature. Further research on realization of full cells by processing hybridization and cell performance characterization will be performed in near future.
Frequency-domain equalization for distributed terrestrial DTV transmission environments

The 8-VSB modulation, the transmission standard for the terrestrial digital television (DTV) of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), suffers from multipath fading because it conveys information on the amplitude. To solve this problem, decision feedback equalizers (DFEs) have been commonly used in the terrestrial DTV receivers. However, under severe channels, such as a 0-dB ghost channel or a distributed transmission environment, the DFEs have shown unstable convergence due to the error propagation caused by decision errors. Instead of unstable time-domain DFE schemes, by proposing a frequency-domain direct-inversion equalization method, we achieve stable equalization and low symbol error rates. To secure the existence of a channel inverse, channel-matched filtering and noncausal filtering are carried out before equalization. Simulation results show that the proposed method performs much better than the existing DFE schemes in terms of both the stability and the symbol error rates.
Floristic study of Jang-do (Isl.) in Korea

We investigated the flora of Jang-do (Isl.), an island of the Heuksan archipelago, located in Heuksan-myeon, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do and discussed the remarkable plants found there. Thirteen-field trips (total 27 days) were completed from May of 2004 to May of 2013. As a result, we identified the distribution of 423 taxa in Jang-do (Isl.), comprising 104 families, 285 genera, 335 species, 78 varieties and 10 forms. There are a total of 95 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants. The floristic regional indicators are as follows; four taxa of level V such as Impatiens furcillata, four taxa of level IV such as Hosta yingeri, 14 taxa of level III such as Ophioglossum vulgatum, 5 taxa of level II, and 58 taxa of level I. In addition 10 red data plants, 2 vulnerable species (VU) including Calanthe striata for. sieboldii, and 4 least concern species (LC) like Ardisia crenata, 2 not evaluated species (NE) such as Hosta yingeri, were found in the investigated area. An unrecorded species, Fragaria (Rosaceae), was found in a forest of Jang-do (Isl.) for the first time in Korea.

<P>Human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hASCs) have the power to differentiate into various cell types including chondrocytes, osteocytes, adipocytes, neurons, cardiomyocytes, and smooth muscle cells. We characterized the functional expression of ion channels after transforming growth factor-β<SUB>1</SUB> (TGF-β<SUB>1</SUB>)-induced differentiation of hASCs, providing insights into the differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells. The treatment of hASCs with TGF-β<SUB>1</SUB> dramatically increased the contraction of a collagen-gel lattice and the expression levels of specific genes for smooth muscle including α-smooth muscle actin, calponin, smooth mucle-myosin heavy chain, smoothelin-B, myocardin, and <I>h</I>-caldesmon. We observed Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>, big-conductance Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>-activated K<SUP>+</SUP> (BK<SUB>Ca</SUB>), and voltage-dependent K<SUP>+</SUP> (K<SUB>v</SUB>) currents in TGF-β<SUB>1</SUB>-induced, differentiated hASCs and not in undifferentiated hASCs. The currents share the characteristics of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs). RT-PCR and Western blotting revealed that the L-type (Ca<SUB>v</SUB>1.2) and T-type (Ca<SUB>v</SUB>3.1, 3.2, and 3.3), known to be expressed in vascular SMCs, dramatically increased along with the Ca<SUB>v</SUB>β<SUB>1</SUB> and Ca<SUB>v</SUB>β<SUB>3</SUB> subtypes in TGF-β<SUB>1</SUB>-induced, differentiated hASCs. Although the expression-level changes of the β-subtype BK<SUB>Ca</SUB> channels varied, the major α-subtype BK<SUB>Ca</SUB> channel (K<SUB>Ca</SUB>1.1) clearly increased in the TGF-β<SUB>1</SUB>-induced, differentiated hASCs. Most of the K<SUB>v</SUB> subtypes, also known to be expressed in vascular SMCs, dramatically increased in the TGF-β<SUB>1</SUB>-induced, differentiated hASCs. Our results suggest that TGF-β<SUB>1</SUB> induces the increased expression of vascular SMC-like ion channels and the differentiation of hASCs into contractile vascular SMCs.</P>
