      • Shape-Adaptable 2D Titanium Carbide (MXene) Heater

        <P>Prior to the advent of the next-generation heater for wearable/on-body electronic devices, various properties are required, including conductivity, transparency, mechanical reliability, and conformability. Expansion to two-dimensional (2D) structure of metallic nanowires based on network- and mesh-type geometries has been widely exploited for realizing these heaters. However, the routes led to many drawbacks such as the low-density cross-bar linking, self-aggregation of wire, and high junction resistance. Although 2D carbon nanomaterials such as graphene and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have shown their potentials for the purpose, CVD-grown graphene with sufficiently high conductivity was limited due to its poor processability for large-area applications, while rGO fabricated with a complex reduction process involving the use of toxic chemicals suffered from a low electrical conductivity. In this study, we demonstrate a simple and robust process, utilizing electrostatic assembling of negatively charged MXene flakes on a positively treated surface of substrate, for fabricating a metal-like 2D MXene thin film heater (TFH). Our TFH showed a high optical property (>65%), low sheet resistance (215 ?/sq), fast electrothermal response (within dozens of seconds) with an intrinsically high electrical conductivity, and mechanical flexibility (up to 180? bending). Its capability for forming a firm and stable ionic-type interface with a counterpart surface allows us to develop a shape-adaptable and patchable thread heater (TH) that can be shaped on diverse substrates even under harsh conditions of conventional sewing or weaving processes. This work suggests that our shape-adaptable MXene heaters are potentially suitable not only for wearable devices for local heating and defrosting but also for a variety of emerging applications of soft actuators and wearable/flexible healthcare monitoring and thermotherapy.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

      • Genomic alterations in <i>BCL2L1</i> and <i>DLC1</i> contribute to drug sensitivity in gastric cancer

        <P><B>Significance</B></P><P>Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the major causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide, but targeted therapy for GC is limited. Here, we identified two druggable targets from genomic alteration profiling of 103 patients with GC from Asia and validated the target suitability using patient-derived GC xenograft models, which recapitulate the tumor biology observed in patients. Combination therapy of irinotecan (standard treatment) with a <I>BCL2L1</I> (<I>BCL2</I>-like 1)-targeted drug was effective in size reduction of GC tumors having amplification of the <I>BCL2L1</I> gene, and genomic mutations of deleted in liver cancer 1 (<I>DLC1</I>) were associated with increased sensitivity to a ROCK inhibitor. Therefore, our study strongly suggests that <I>BCL2L1</I> and <I>DLC1</I> can serve as targets for novel GC therapies.</P><P>Gastric cancer (GC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Recent high-throughput analyses of genomic alterations revealed several driver genes and altered pathways in GC. However, therapeutic applications from genomic data are limited, largely as a result of the lack of druggable molecular targets and preclinical models for drug selection. To identify new therapeutic targets for GC, we performed array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) of DNA from 103 patients with GC for copy number alteration (CNA) analysis, and whole-exome sequencing from 55 GCs from the same patients for mutation profiling. Pathway analysis showed recurrent alterations in the Wnt signaling [<I>APC</I>, <I>CTNNB1</I>, and <I>DLC1</I> (deleted in liver cancer 1)], ErbB signaling (<I>ERBB2</I>, <I>PIK3CA</I>, and <I>KRAS</I>), and p53 signaling/apoptosis [<I>TP53</I> and <I>BCL2L1</I> (BCL2-like 1)] pathways. In 18.4% of GC cases (19/103), amplification of the antiapoptotic gene <I>BCL2L1</I> was observed, and subsequently a <I>BCL2L1</I> inhibitor was shown to markedly decrease cell viability in <I>BCL2L1</I>-amplified cell lines and in similarly altered patient-derived GC xenografts, especially when combined with other chemotherapeutic agents. In 10.9% of cases (6/55), mutations in <I>DLC1</I> were found and were also shown to confer a growth advantage for these cells via activation of Rho-ROCK signaling, rendering these cells more susceptible to a ROCK inhibitor. Taken together, our study implicates <I>BCL2L1</I> and <I>DLC1</I> as potential druggable targets for specific subsets of GC cases.</P>

        Combined Intramedullary and Intradural Extramedullary Solitary Fibrous Tumor in Cervical Spine

        We present a rare case of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) located in the intramedullary (IM) and intradural extramedullary sites of cervical spine, mimicking thrombosed aneurysm and meningioma. Herein, we present a case of spinal intradural SFT in a 59-year-old woman. She presented to the outpatient clinic with a right-sided motor weakness for over a year. The case was initially misinterpreted as a thrombosed aneurysm of the posterior spinal artery. Cervical spine magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-circumscribed intradural mass with isosignal intensity on T1 and T2-weighted images with markedly T2 dark signal focus and homogenous intense enhancement at the level of C6. Computed tomography showed a slightly high-density mass without evidence of calcification or cystic component. Surgical removal was performed. However, due to combined IM component with adhesion, incomplete tumor resection was done. Pathologic analysis revealed hypocellular spindle cells with a thick collagenous stroma and immunohistochemical staining confirmed SFT. Spinal intradural SFT is a rare spindle cell tumor. Radiologists should consider SFT as a differential diagnosis if T2-weighted imaging shows an intradural located mass with markedly dark signal intensity focus.

      • First Record and Genetic Diversity of the Peking Gecko (Gekko swinhonis, Squamata: Gekkonidae) in Incheon, South Korea

        The introduction of invasive species is increasing worldwide due to the development of the trade and the pet industry. Geckos (Gekkonidae) are the representative invasive reptiles. In the Republic of Korea, two gecko species, the Schlegel's Japanese gecko (Gekko japonicus) and the House gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus), have reported. In September 2021, new geckos were collected from buildings near the Incheon Port. To determine their identities, we evaluated 16 morphological parameters (7 size values and 9 scale count values) and analyzed the partial sequences of two mitochondrial DNA genes (CO1 and CytB) from 21 adult geckos. In addition, to evaluate the possibility as an invasive species, we constructed the haplotype network and Bayesian inference (BI) and Maximum likelihood (ML) phylogenetic trees, including 27 Chinese populations. Based on the values of the morphological parameters and the BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) analysis of the CO1 gene sequence (688bp), we determined the geckos as the Peking gecko (G. swinhonis), an endemic species in China. In the results of the phylogenetic trees, the geckos in the Incheon population is intermixed with those from Chinese populations. Overall, we suggest that the Peking gecko population in Incheon Port might be an invasive species recently introduced from multiple locations of China.       • Carnosic Acid Inhibits the Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition in B16F10 Melanoma Cells: A Possible Mechanism for the Inhibition of Cell Migration

        <P>Carnosic acid is a natural benzenediol abietane diterpene found in rosemary and exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-carcinogenic activities. In this study, we evaluated the effects of carnosic acid on the metastatic characteristics of B16F10 melanoma cells. When B16F10 cells were cultured in an <I>in vitro</I> Transwell system, carnosic acid inhibited cell migration in a dose-dependent manner. Carnosic acid suppressed the adhesion of B16F10 cells, as well as the secretion of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1, urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), and vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM)-1. Interestingly, secretion of TIMP-2 increased significantly in B16F10 cells treated with 10 μmol/L carnosic acid. Additionally, carnosic acid suppressed the mesenchymal markers snail, slug, vimentin, and <I>N</I>-cadherin and induced epithelial marker E-cadherin. Furthermore, carnosic acid suppressed phosphorylation of Src, FAK, and AKT. These results indicate that inhibition of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition may be important for the carnosic acid-induced inhibition of B16F10 cell migration.</P>

        Current Status of Flow Cytometric Immunophenotyping of Hematolymphoid Neoplasms in Korea

        Background: Flow cytometric immunophenotyping of hematolymphoid neoplasms (FCI-HLN) is essential for diagnosis, classification, and minimal residual disease (MRD) monitoring. FCI-HLN is typically performed using in-house protocols, raising the need for standardization. Therefore, we surveyed the current status of FCI-HLN in Korea to obtain fundamental data for quality improvement and standardization. Methods: Eight university hospitals actively conducting FCI-HLN participated in our survey. We analyzed responses to a questionnaire that included inquiries regarding test items, reagent antibodies (RAs), fluorophores, sample amounts (SAs), reagent antibody amounts (RAAs), acquisition cell number (ACN), isotype control (IC) usage, positive/negative criteria, and reporting. Results: Most hospitals used acute HLN, chronic HLN, plasma cell neoplasm (PCN), and MRD panels. The numbers of RAs were heterogeneous, with a maximum of 32, 26, 12, 14, and 10 antibodies used for acute HLN, chronic HLN, PCN, ALL-MRD, and multiple myeloma-MRD, respectively. The number of fluorophores ranged from 4 to 10. RAs, SAs, RAAs, and ACN were diverse. Most hospitals used a positive criterion of 20%, whereas one used 10% for acute and chronic HLN panels. Five hospitals used ICs for the negative criterion. Positive/negative assignments, percentages, and general opinions were commonly reported. In MRD reporting, the limit of detection and lower limit of quantification were included. Conclusions: This is the first comprehensive study on the current status of FCI-HLN in Korea, confirming the high heterogeneity and complexity of FCI-HLN practices. Standardization of FCI-HLN is urgently needed. The findings provide a reference for establishing standard FCI-HLN guidelines.

        2015 개정 국어 교육과정에 따른 과정 중심 작문 평가 방안 - 프로토콜을 중심으로

        이 연구의 목적은 과정 중심 작문 평가의 구체적인 방법을 제안하는 것이다. 과정 중심 평가의 취지를 잘 드러내면서도 국어과의 성격에 부합하는 평가 방법으로 프로토콜에 주목하였다. 프로토콜은 쓰기 과정의 사고를 기록하거나 해석한 자료로 쓰기 결과물인 텍스트와 더불어 평가의 자원으로 기능한다. 프로토콜을 활용함으로써 텍스트와 그에 대한 필자의 사고를 연계하여 평가할 수 있다. 개별 필자의 쓰기 수행 특성에 대한 정보를 획득하고, 교사와 학생의 평가 담화를 생성할 수 있다. 그리고 쓰기 학습 요소가 필자의 쓰기 과정에 어떻게 드러나는지 평가함으로써 교수·학습에 대한 구체적인 정보를 얻을 수 있다. 프로토콜을 활용한 과정 중심 평가는 프로토콜의 생성과 분석으로 이루어 진다. 프로토콜의 생성 주체와 성격에 따라 다양한 방식의 프로토콜 생성이 가능하다. 일차적 해석 자원으로서의 프로토콜을 텍스트와 비교 분석하거나 이차적 해석 자원으로서의 프로토콜로부터 필자의 쓰기 수행 특성을 분석한다. 이는 쓰기 영역 과정 중심 평가 방법의 구체적인 상을 제시한다는 의의가 있다. This study aimed to propose a specific method of process-oriented evaluation in the writing domain using protocol data. The protocol refers to data that records or interprets the thoughts of the writing process, and functions as a resource for evaluating the writing along with the resulting text. By using the protocol, we can link and evaluate the text and the writer’s thought process, which would enable us to obtain information on the characteristics of individual writers' writing performance. Additionally, it would provide specific information on teaching and learning. The process-oriented evaluation using the protocol consists of the creation and analysis of the protocol. It is possible to create a protocol in various ways according to the creator and nature of the protocol. This process compares and analyzes the protocol as a primary interpretation resource with text or analyzes the writing performance characteristics of the author using the protocol as a secondary interpretation resource. This study is meaningful in that it presents a concrete description of the process-oriented evaluation method in the writing domain.
