<P>Highly porous amorphous Zn2SnO4 electrodes are prepared using electrospinning techniques and combined with organic or ruthenium dyes to fabricate dye‐sensitized solar cells. As reported by Sung‐Yeon Jang, Renaud Demadrille, Il‐Doo Kim, and co‐workers on page 3146, the devices based on 3‐μm‐thick electrodes and the organic dyes demonstrate significantly improved performances compared to those using the ruthenium complex. Using this approach, solar cells with power conversion efficiencies up to 3.7% are obtained. </P>

<P>The effect of Ag decoration on the gas sensing characteristics of SnO2 nanowire (NW) networks was investigated. The Ag layers with thicknesses of 5–50 nm were uniformly coated on the surface of SnO2 NWs via e-beam evaporation, which were converted into isolated or continuous configurations of Ag islands by heat treatment at 450 °C for 2 h. The SnO2 NWs decorated by isolated Ag nano-islands displayed a 3.7-fold enhancement in gas response to 100 ppm C2H5OH at 450 °C compared to pristine SnO2 NWs. In contrast, as the Ag decoration layers became continuous, the response to C2H5OH decreased significantly. The enhancement and deterioration of the C2H5OH sensing characteristics by the introduction of the Ag decoration layer were strongly governed by the morphological configurations of the Ag catalysts on SnO2 NWs and their sensitization mechanism.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/aamick/2011/aamick.2011.3.issue-8/am200647f/production/images/medium/am-2011-00647f_0009.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/am200647f'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
Periodic fuel supply to a micro-DMFC using a piezoelectric linear actuator
Hwang, Jun Young,Shin, Kwon-Yong,Lee, Sang-Ho,Kang, Kyungtae,Kang, Heuiseok,Lee, Jae-Hyuk,Peck, Dong-Hyun,Jung, Doo-Hwan,Jang, Jae-Hyuk IOP 2010 JOURNAL OF MICROMECHANICS AND MICROENGINEERING - Vol.20 No.8
<P>A reciprocating pump using a piezoelectric linear actuator is introduced as a fuel supply module for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) stack. The results show that the key advantage of the pump with the linear actuator is its ability to operate at a low frequency, which enables high flow rectification performance. At the end of this study, the pump is applied to a DMFC system to demonstrate that the output voltage of a DMFC stack remains stable with time even when the pumping pressure oscillates periodically at frequencies of a few Hz. It is also demonstrated that the maximum output power of the stack exceeds 6 W with power consuming 3.5% of the stack power for the fuel pump.</P>
