It is generally accepted that spermatozoa capacitation is associated with protein kinase A-mediated tyrosine phosphorylation. In our previous study, we identified the fibrous sheath CABYR binding protein (FSCB), which was phosphorylated by PKA. However, the phosphorylation status of FSCB protein during spermatozoa capacitation should be further investigated. To this aim, in this study, we found that phosphorylation of this 270-kDa protein occurred as early as 1 min after mouse spermatozoa capacitation, which increased over time and remained stable after 60 min. Immunoprecipitation assays demonstrated that the tyrosine and Ser/Thr phosphorylation of FSCB occurred during spermatozoa capacitation. The extent of phosphorylation and was closely associated with the PKA activity and spermatozoa motility characteristics. FSCB phosphorylation could be induced by PKA agonist DB-cAMP, but was blocked by PKA antagonist H-89.Therefore, FSCB contributes to spermatozoa capacitation in a tyrosine-phosphorylated format, which may help in further elucidating the molecular mechanism of spermatozoa capacitation. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are immature endothelial cells that participate in vascular repair and postnatal neovascularization and provide a novel and promising therapy for the treatment of vascular disease. Studies in different animal models have shown that EPC mobilization through pharmacological agents and autologous EPC transplantation contribute to restoring blood supply and tissue regeneration after ischemic injury. However, these effects of the progenitor cells in clinical studies exhibit mixed results. The therapeutic efficacy of EPCs is closely associated with the number of the progenitor cells recruited into ischemic regions and their functional abilities and survival in injury tissues. In this review, we discussed the regulating role of stromal cell-derived factor-1 (also known CXCL12, SDF-1) in EPC mobilization, recruitment, homing, vascular repair and neovascularization, and analyzed the underlying machemisms of these functions. Application of SDF-1 to improve the regenerative function of EPCs following vascular injury was also discussed. SDF-1 plays a crucial role in mobilizing EPC from bone marrow into peripheral circulation, recruiting the progenitor cells to target tissue and protecting against cell death under pathological conditions; thus improve EPC regenerative capacity. SDF-1 are crucial for regulating EPC regenerative function, and provide a potential target for improve therapeutic efficacy of the progenitor cells in treatment of vascular disease.

Combinations of multiple biomarkers representing distinct aspects of metastasis may have better prognostic value for breast cancer patients, especially those in late stages. In this study, we evaluated the protein levels of N-${\alpha}$-acetyltransferase 10 protein (Naa10p), synuclein-${\gamma}$ (SNCG), and phosphatase of regenerating liver-3 (PRL-3) in 365 patients with breast cancer by immunohistochemistry. Distinct prognostic subgroups of breast cancer were identified by combination of the three biomarkers. The Naa10p+SNCG-PRL-3-subgroup showed best prognosis with a median distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) of 140 months, while the Naa10p-SNCG+PRL-3+subgroup had the worst prognosis with a median DMFS of 60.5 months. Multivariate analysis indicated Naa10p, SNCG, PRL-3, and the TNM classification were all independent prognostic factors for both DMFS and overall survival (OS). The three biomarker combination of Naa10p, SNCG and PRL-3 performed better in patients with lymph node metastasis, especially those with more advanced tumors than other subgroups. In conclusion, the combined expression profile of Naa10p, SNCG and PRL-3, alone or in combination with the TNM classification system, may provide a precise estimate of prognosis of breast cancer patients.
Optoelectronic Performance of Radial-Junction Si Nanopillar and Nanohole Solar Cells
Li, Hua-Min,Lee, Dae-Yeong,Yoo, Won Jong IEEE 2012 IEEE transactions on electron devices Vol.59 No.9
<P>Two typical radial-junction structures, Si nanopillars (SiNP) and nanoholes, were modeled and compared for solar cell applications. From the physical model using the transport equations, the output performances, e.g., short-circuit current density, open-circuit voltage, energy conversion efficiency, fill factor, etc., were simulated. A maximum efficiency of 21.0<TEX>$\%$</TEX> was predicted for Si nanoholes, demonstrating a superior performance of the radial-junction structure compared to SiNPs (14.6 <TEX>$\%$</TEX>). Also, the dependence of the conversion efficiency on various structural parameters, e.g., substrate thickness, height, feature radius, junction depth, emitter doping concentration, as well as front and back surface recombination velocities, etc., was investigated, providing a design principle for high-efficiency radial-junction solar cells.</P>

Objectives: To study application of the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), metabolic tumor volume (MTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) with $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT for predicting prognosis of esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESC) patients. Methods: Eighty-six patients with ESC staged from I to IV were prospectively enrolled. Cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) or palliative chemoradiotherapy were the main treatment methods and none received surgery. $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT scans were performed before the treatment. SUVmax, MTV, and TLG were measured for the primary esophageal lesion and regional lymph nodes. Receiver operating characteristic curves (ROCs) were generated to calculate the P value of the predictive ability and the optimal threshold. Results: MTV and TLG proved to be good indexes in the prediction of outcome for the ESC patients. An MTV value of 15.6 ml and a TLG value of 183.5 were optimal threshold to predict the overall survival (OS). The areas under the curve (AUC) for MTV and TLG were 0.74 and 0.70, respectively. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed an MTV less than 15.6 ml and a TLG less than 183.5 to indicate good media survival time (p value <0.05). In the stage III-IV patient group, MTV could better predict the OS (P < 0.001), with a sensitivity and specificity of 0.80 and 0.67, respectively. Conclusions: Pre-treatment MTV and TLG are useful prognostic factors in nonsurgical ESC.

The frequency- and temperature-dependent dielectric properties for printed circuit board (PCB) applications are investigated in the frequency range from 1 kHz to 1 MHz and the temperature range from 300 K to 600 K. The applicable range of frequency for the capacitance-voltage (C-V) technique is discussed. An analytical model based on the experimental results and the theoretical analysis is proposed to give rise to a comprehensive understanding of the correlations between the operation temperature and the dielectric properties, where the temperature-dependent dipole property is investigated. Estimation of Trapped Charge Density in SONOS Flash Memory Using a Parallel Capacitor Model
Hua-Min Li,Gang Zhang,Won Jong Yoo IEEE 2011 IEEE transactions on electron devices Vol.58 No.10
<P>This paper proposes a model established using the parallel connection of MOS and floating-gate MOS capacitors to examine the electric properties of polysilicon-oxide-nitride-oxide-silicon (SONOS) Flash memory in both the fresh and programmed states. A linear relationship between threshold voltage shift and effective trapped charge density was revealed via the threshold electric field. The simulation of the channel current was given based on our model, being in agreement with the experimental results for both forward and reverse read modes. The model and theory make an easy and time-saving approach to comprehensively analyze the trapped charge and its effect on other electric properties, e.g., electric field, oxide capacitance, and charge distribution, contributing to the control of the write/erase operation, the optimization of the device structure, and the characteristics of the retention properties in SONOS Flash memory.</P>
