        Feasibility of Three-Dimensional Balanced Steady-State Free Precession Cine Magnetic Resonance Imaging Combined with an Image Denoising Technique to Evaluate Cardiac Function in Children with Repaired Tetralogy of Fallot

        Objective: To investigate the feasibility of cine three-dimensional (3D) balanced steady-state free precession (b-SSFP) imaging combined with a non-local means (NLM) algorithm for image denoising in evaluating cardiac function in children with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF). Materials and Methods: Thirty-five patients with rTOF (mean age, 12 years; range, 7–18 years) were enrolled to undergo cardiac cine image acquisition, including two-dimensional (2D) b-SSFP, 3D b-SSFP, and 3D b-SSFP combined with NLM. End-diastolic volume (EDV), end-systolic volume (ESV), stroke volume (SV), and ejection fraction (EF) of the two ventricles were measured and indexed by body surface index. Acquisition time and image quality were recorded and compared among the three imaging sequences. Results: 3D b-SSFP with denoising vs. 2D b-SSFP had high correlation coefficients for EDV, ESV, SV, and EF of the left (0.959– 0.991; p < 0.001) as well as right (0.755–0.965; p < 0.001) ventricular metrics. The image acquisition time ± standard deviation (SD) was 25.1 ± 2.4 seconds for 3D b-SSFP compared with 277.6 ± 0.7 seconds for 2D b-SSFP, indicating a significantly shorter time with the 3D than the 2D sequence (p < 0.001). Image quality score was better with 3D b-SSFP combined with denoising than with 3D b-SSFP (mean ± SD, 3.8 ± 0.6 vs. 3.5 ± 0.6; p = 0.005). Signal-to-noise ratios for blood and myocardium as well as contrast between blood and myocardium were higher for 3D b-SSFP combined with denoising than for 3D b-SSFP (p < 0.05 for all but septal myocardium). Conclusion: The 3D b-SSFP sequence can significantly reduce acquisition time compared to the 2D b-SSFP sequence for cine imaging in the evaluation of ventricular function in children with rTOF, and its quality can be further improved by combining it with an NLM denoising method.

        A Novel Non-contact Measurement Method for the Detection of Current Flowing Through Concealed Conductors

        In order to detect the current flowing through concealed conductor, this paper proposes a new method based on derivative method. Firstly, this paper analyzes the main peak characteristic of the derivative function of magnetic field generated by a current-carrying conductor, and a relationship between the current flowing through the conductor and the main peak of the derivative function is obtained and applied to calculate the current. Then, the method is applied to detect the conductor current flowing through grounding grids of substations. Finally, the numerical experimental and field experiment verified the feasibility and accuracy of the method, and the computing results show that the method can effectively measure the conductor current of grounding grids with low error, and the error is within 5 %.

        In Vitro Evaluation and Monitoring of the Expression Level and Localization of Aldose Reductase Using Functionalized Quantum Dots and EGFP

        The optimization of aldose reductase (AR) expression levels and tracking of the AR expression sites within the cell is an essential step in developing a platform for the effective production of aldose reductase inhibitors (ARIs). In this study, we have demonstrated the use of both immunocytochemistry and quantum dots-based immunofluorescence techniques for observing and detecting the expression level and localization of AR in the cytoplasm and cell membrane of a eukaryotic cell model with high levels of AR protein expression. Our results show that high expression levels of human AR can be achieved using the eukaryotic cell model that we have developed. The overexpressed AR can be used for translational studies of hAR and the screening of ARIs. More importantly, the use of the established quantum dots-based immunofluorescence technique in the intracellular labeling of AR allows the determination of the expression and distribution of the AR gene. Overall, the use of the interdisciplinary approach of both genetic engineering and quantum dot-based immunofluorescence allows not only the effective production of a desired protein, but also the determination of the cellular localization of such an expressed protein.

        Nonenzymatic Glucose Biosensor Based on NiNPs/Nafion/graphene Film for Direct Glucose Determination in Human Serum

        This study describes a type of novel nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) decorated on Nafion-graphene composite film by using the electrochemical deposition method. It was used to fabricate electrochemical biosensors for sensitive nonenzymatic glucose detection. Compared with the Nafion–graphene film and NiNPs-modified glassy carbon electrode (NiNPs-GCE), the NiNPs/Nafion/graphene/GCE showed the best electrocatalytic activity towards glucose oxidation in alkaline medium. The NiNPs/Nafion/graphene/GCE at an applied potential of +0.55V in a linear range of 1–200 μM presented a high sensitivity of 3437.25 μA·mM -1 cm -2 with coefficient of correlation R2 = 0.999; and in a linear range of 200–10 800 μM it performed the best sensitivity of 2848.6 μA·mM -1 cm -2 with coefficient of correlation R2 = 0.995 towards glucose oxidation. For a concentration up to 200 M, a linear range was obtained with a limit of detection of 0.6 μM (signal to noise = 3) and as much as 10 800 μM with a limit of detection of 0.82 μM (signal to noise = 3). The time of responses was about 1–1.5 s with the addition of 0.1–1mM glucose. In addition, NiNPs/Nafion/graphene/GCE also has a high anti-interference ability toward common oxidative interfering species, such as uric acid, ascorbic acid and dopamine. More importantly, NiNPs/Nafion/graphene/GCE was successfully used for the determination of glucose concentration in human serum samples in comparison with a local hospital. The NiNPs/Nafion/graphene/GCE exhibited high sensitivity, low working potential, good stability, excellent electrical properties, enhanced selectivity and fast amperometric responses to glucose oxidation. Thus, as a nonenzymatic sensor, it is promising for future glucose determination development.

        Novel arylhydrazone derivatives bearing a rhodanine moiety: synthesis and evaluation of their antibacterial activities

        A series of arylhydrazone derivatives bearing a rhodanine moiety have been synthesized, characterized, and evaluated as antibacterial agents. Some of these compounds showed potent antibacterial activities against several different strains of Gram-positive bacteria, including multidrug-resistant clinical isolates. Of the compounds tested, IIk and IIIk were identified as the most effective, with minimum inhibitory concentration values of $2-4{\mu}g/mL$ against multidrug-resistant Gram-positive organisms, including methicillin-resistant and quinolone-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. None of the compounds exhibited any activity against the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli 1356 at $64{\mu}g/mL$.
