        <▼1><P>A missense mutation of <I>KARRIKIN-INSENSITIVE2</I>, <I>KAI2</I><SUP><I>ply2</I></SUP>, compromises its ligand-binding activity, which subsequently impairs KAI2-signaling and multiple aspects of light-dependent responses.</P></▼1><▼2><P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A smoke-derived compound, karrikin (KAR), and an endogenous but as yet unidentified KARRIKIN INSENSITIVE2 (KAI2) ligand (KL) have been identified as chemical cues in higher plants that impact on multiple aspects of growth and development. Genetic screening of light-signaling mutants in <I>Arabidopsis thaliana</I> has identified a mutant designated as <I>ply2</I> (<I>pleiotropic long hypocotyl2</I>) that has pleiotropic light-response defects. In this study, we used positional cloning to identify the molecular lesion of <I>ply2</I> as a missense mutation of <I>KAI2</I>/<I>HYPOSENSITIVE TO LIGHT</I>, which causes a single amino acid substitution, Ala219Val. Physiological analysis and genetic epistasis analysis with the KL-signaling components <I>MORE AXILLARY GROWTH2</I> (<I>MAX2</I>) and <I>SUPPRESSOR OF MAX2 1</I> suggested that the pleiotropic phenotypes of the <I>ply2</I> mutant can be ascribed to a defect in KL-signaling. Molecular and biochemical analyses revealed that the mutant KAI2<SUP>ply2</SUP> protein is impaired in its ligand-binding activity. In support of this conclusion, X-ray crystallography studies suggested that the <I>KAI2</I><SUP><I>ply2</I></SUP> mutation not only results in a narrowed entrance gate for the ligand but also alters the structural flexibility of the helical lid domains. We discuss the structural implications of the Ala219 residue with regard to ligand-specific binding and signaling of KAI2, together with potential functions of KL-signaling in the context of the light-regulatory network in <I>Arabidopsis thaliana</I>.</P></▼2>

      • A randomized, open phase IV exploratory clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture on the outcome of induction of ovulation in women with poor ovarian response : A study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><B>Introduction:</B></P><P>Women with infertility who have a poor ovarian responder (POR), characterized by a low number of retrieved oocytes after ovulation induction, often have a significantly reduced pregnancy rate after in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET), due to the few transferred embryos. Acupuncture is a form of Korean Traditional Medicine. It involves the insertion of a microscopic needle at a specific point in the body, known as an acupuncture point or an acupoint. In this study, our purpose is to investigate how acupuncture affects the retrieval of mature oocytes after ovulation induction in patients with POR.</P><P><B>Methods and analysis:</B></P><P>This study will be a randomized clinical trial comprising an IVF-ET trial and an IVF-ET trial after acupuncture. Seventy patients will by enrolled and randomly assigned to either of the 2 groups. The study subjects will be required to be diagnosed as having POR. Participants will be divided into 2 groups: IVF-ET single treatment group, and acupuncture and IVF-ET combined treatment group. The study subjects will be required to participate in a 15-week trial involving 16 acupuncture treatments over a period of approximately 2 months before ovulation induction for oocyte retrieval. The primary assessment of all participants will be comparing the number of oocytes.</P><P><B>Result:</B></P><P>This treatment will be a therapeutic model for POR.</P><P><B>Discussion:</B></P><P>Our results will provide patients with POR as well as complementary and alternative medicine professionals, such as Korean medicine doctors, about the potential role of acupuncture in the treatment of POR. This will improve the quality of life in women with infertility and provide an important treatment option for patients with POR. Further studies can be performed to determine the optimal treatment for POR.</P>

      • EBM 구축을 위한 쌍화탕의 실험 연구 문헌 분석

        Objective: The purpose of this report was to provide the information about activity and safety of Ssanghwa-tang by analyzing domestic papers and theses about Ssanghwa-tang. Methods: Domestic papers and theses related to Ssanghwa-tang were reviewed and analyzed. These papers were then classified by year, experimental method, and activity subject. Results: The following results were obtained in this study. 1. The study of Ssanghwa-tang started from 1981 and continued steadily 1990s and it was decreased 2000s. 2. The paper of Ssanghwatang was entire domestic paper, 20 volumes. 3. In classified by experimental method and animal of Ssanghwa-tang paper, more than a half study used rat in vivo experiment. Furthermore clinical experiments were performed about anti-fatigue effect of Ssanghwa-tang and Ssanghwatang was proved a safety herbal medicine in acute toxicity experiment. 4. Decursin, glycyrrhizin, paeoniflorin were determined in Ssanghwa-tang by using HPLC analysis. 5. As these studies were classified by subject, papers related to anti-fatigue effect were most abundant by 7 papers. Besides there were several papers related to liver funtion, anti-inflammatory, alleviation, smooth muscle relaxation effect and so on. 6. According to experimental data, it is supported that Ssanghwa-tang was safety herbal medicine and it has a several activity about anti-fatigue, anti-inflammatory, alleviation, smooth muscle relaxation. Conclusion : Many study of basic science experiments and clinical experiments were performed and reported on Ssanghwa-tang in domestic journal. Ssanghws-tang is being used in various ways associating with anti-fatigue. anti-inflammatory. alleviation and smooth muscle relaxation. furthermore Ssanghwatang was proved a safety herbal medicine in acute toxicity experiment. However, studies on randomized controlled trials of Ssanghwatang need to be completed at the clinical level.

        어혈처방 3종이 지방전구세포 분화에 미치는 영향

        Objectives : Blood stasis (BS) is related to be caused by blood circulation and stagnation which are cancer, atherosclerosis and hyperlipidemia in traditional medicine. We extracted 3 kinds of BS formula; Seogakjihwang-tang (SGT), Tonggyuhawlhyul-tang (THT), Hyulbuchukeo-tang (HCT). This study was conducted to investigate whether the 3 kinds of herbal formula extracts have inhibitory efficacy association with anti-adipogenesis. Methods : To investigate the anti-adipogenesis, we used the mouse fibroblast cell line, 3T3-L1 which differentiated into adipocytes in response to insulin, IBMX and dexamethasone (MDI). Cytotoxicity of herbal formula extracts were examined by CCK-8 kit. Intracellular lipid droplets were detected by Oil-Red-O staining. Triglyceride (TG) and leptin were measure using elisa kit. Results : The yield of water extracts was 14.62% (SGT), 21.27% (THT), 20.02% (HCT). Lipid accumulation was reduced significantly by 3 kinds of herbal formula compared to control. Especially, THT and HCT decreased lipid droplet, respectively at all concentration. The TG and leptin were also inhibited by 3 kinds of herbal formula. The IC50 of TG were 280.51 ㎍/㎖ (SGT), 52.62 ㎍/㎖ (THT), 313.99 ㎍/㎖ (HCT). The IC50 of leptin were 348.76 ㎍/㎖ (SGT), 164.02 ㎍/㎖ (THT), 257.00 ㎍/㎖ (HCT). THT was better than other herbal formula on anti-adipogenesis. Conclusion : kinds of herbal formula inhibited adipogenesis in MDI-induced 3T3-L1 adipocytes, as indicated by the significant reduction in TG and leptin concentration without cytotoxicity. Therefore, 3 kinds of herbal formula for BS might act as a therapeutic agent for preventing lipid diseases, such as obesity and atherosclerosis.

      • A case of bee pollen-induced skin allergy with eosinophilic microabscess

        Bee pollen is a mixture made by worker bees and consists of pollen, nectar, and salivary secretions. Due to its abundant nutritional and medicinal effects, people are consuming bee pollen increasingly these days. However, some of the elements of bee pollen, such as pollen and fungus, can cause allergic reactions. Bee pollen-induced allergy is a type of food allergy, and anaphylaxis is the most common symptom. Besides anaphylaxis, other symptoms in different organs can also occur. A 29-year-old man presented with erythematous vesicular patches on the lower abdomen 3 months ago. The skin biopsy specimen showed epidermal spongiosis, a subcorneal pustule filled with eosinophilic microabscess, and perivascular eosinophilic infiltration. He was diagnosed with skin allergy caused by bee pollen. He stopped ingesting bee pollen and was treated with oral anti-histamines and topical steroid. We report this case because of its unique clinical and histological appearance.

      • Improvement of the water resistance of atactic poly(vinyl alcohol) nanowebs by a heat treatment

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Nanoscale materials can be rationally designed to exhibit significantly changed physical, chemical, and biological properties because of the extremely small dimensions. Therefore, atactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (a‐PVA) nanowebs by an electrospinning technique have very high water solubility because of their nanoscale in comparison with microscale materials such as fibers and films. In this study, a‐PVA nanowebs were prepared via electrospinning under suitable conditions to form PVA webs with uniform nanofibers (fiber average diameter = 200 ± 50 nm), not a bead or bead‐and‐string morphology. Furthermore, to improve the water resistance of the water‐soluble a‐PVA nanowebs, the PVA nanowebs were heat‐treated at various heat‐treatment temperatures. The melting temperature of the heat‐treated PVA nanowebs shifted toward a lower temperature with an increase in the heat‐treatment temperature, and this indicated that micronetwork domains formed. Moreover, with the exception of a PVA nanoweb treated at an excessive heat‐treatment temperature, the heat‐treated PVA nanowebs showed higher crystalline and mechanical properties than a pure PVA nanoweb. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.         Past, Present and Future of Korean Psychiatry

        The history of Korean psychiatry can be epitomized along the stages of westernization and modernization of the nation. The opening of a psychiatric unit of the Japanese colonial government hospital was the first psychiatric treatment facility of western style in Korea, which was later followed by a more humane psychiatric service introduced by a missionary psychiatrist at Severance Hospital. The two mainstreams of Korean psychiatry during colonial days came to end by the outbreak of World War II. The Korean war was a turning point for the modernization of Korean psychiatry due to the influence of American medicine particularly to opportunities for a massive training of professional manpower during and after the war. Many young psychiatrists went abroad for training and their return and dedicated contributions highlighted the establishment of contemporary Korean psychiatry. Today, the level of biological researches attained a world level and the standards of psychiatric education system outstanding in it s excellence. Rapid paces of westernization and modernization was a busy journey to catch up with developed countries mainly to assimilate their progress. Now Korean psychiatry is in stalemate, however, for it now searches for a new identity and directions. For new directions, the suggested were 1) the discovery of a new identity of Korean psychiatry with historical perspective so that a new mind is set forward, 2) integration of brian not only with mind but also with culture, 3) a strategy to form East Asia regional network and hub for more active collaborations with East Asian countries, 4) and a vigorous training program for the leadership of global caliber of young Korean psychiatrists.

        Information Technology and Electronics : Original Article ; A Simple Multispectral Imaging Algorithm for Detection of Defects on Red Delicious Apples

        Purpose: A multispectral algorithm for detection and differentiation of defective (defects on apple skin) and normal Red Delicious apples was developed from analysis of a series of hyperspectral line-scan images. Methods: A fast line-scan hyperspectral imaging system mounted on a conventional apple sorting machine was used to capture hyperspectral images of apples moving approximately 4 apples per second on a conveyor belt. The detection algorithm included an apple segmentation method and a threshold function, and was developed using three wavebands at 676 nm, 714 nm and 779 nm. The algorithm was executed on line-by-line image analysis, simulating online real-time line-scan imaging inspection during fruit processing. Results: The rapid multispectral algorithm detected over 95% of defective apples and 91% of normal apples investigated. Conclusions: The multispectral defect detection algorithm can potentially be used in commercial apple processing lines.

        <P>Sobokchukeo-Tang (ST) is a well-known formula that is used for treating primary dysmenorrhea caused by blood stasis syndrome (BSS) in Korea and China. The current study investigated the anti-inflammatory and anti-adipogenesis effects of ST on adipocytes and macrophages. The anti-inflammatory efficacy of ST was evaluated in RAW 264.7 cells and differentiated THP-1 cells. To induce inflammation, the cells were treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 1 µg/ml). Following the induction of inflammation, the levels of proinflammatory cytokines, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the cell supernatant were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. 3T3-L1 preadipocytes differentiated into adipocytes in response to insulin, isobutyl-1-methylxanthine and dexamethasone (MDI). To confirm the anti-adipogenesis efficacy of ST, we investigated Oil Red O staining was performed, triglyceride (TG) and leptin secretion were measured, and the protein expression of lipid metabolism-associated factors was determined. ST significantly inhibited TNF-α and IL-6 production in the LPS-treated RAW 264.7 cells compared with LPS stimulation alone. In addition, the concentrations of IL-6 and TNF-α were significantly inhibited by ST in LPS-treated THP-1 cells. Lipid accumulation was reduced by ST, similarly to the positive control treatment, SB203580. In the ST-treated group, the TG and leptin concentrations were inhibited by up to 50 and 83%, respectively, compared with MDI induction only. The ST-treated group reduced the protein expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α compared with MDI induction only. The results of the present study demonstrated that ST exerts anti-inflammatory effects on LPS-treated mouse and human macrophage cell lines. ST inhibited adipogenesis in MDI-induced 3T3-L1 adipocytes, as indicated by the significant reduction in TG and leptin concentrations without cytotoxicity. Thus, ST may be useful as a therapeutic agent for preventing lipid-associated diseases, including obesity and atherosclerosis.</P>
