The role of renal proximal tubule transport in the regulation of blood pressure

The electrogenic sodium/bicarbonate cotransporter 1 (NBCe1) on the basolateral side of the renal proximal tubule plays a pivotal role in systemic acid-base homeostasis. Mutations in the gene encoding NBCe1 cause severe proximal renal tubular acidosis accompanied by other extrarenal symptoms. The proximal tubule reabsorbs most of the sodium filtered in the glomerulus, contributing to the regulation of plasma volume and blood pressure. NBCe1 and other sodium transporters in the proximal tubule are regulated by hormones, such as angiotensin II and insulin. Angiotensin II is probably the most important stimulator of sodium reabsorption. Proximal tubule AT1A receptor is crucial for the systemic pressor effect of angiotensin II. In rodents and rabbits, the effect on proximal tubule NBCe1 is biphasic; at low concentration, angiotensin II stimulates NBCe1 via PKC/cAMP/ERK, whereas at high concentration, it inhibits NBCe1 via NO/cGMP/cGKII. In contrast, in human proximal tubule, angiotensin II has a dose-dependent monophasic stimulatory effect via NO/cGMP/ERK. Insulin stimulates the proximal tubule sodium transport, which is IRS2-dependent. We found that in insulin resistance and overt diabetic nephropathy, stimulatory effect of insulin on proximal tubule transport was preserved. Our results suggest that the preserved stimulation of the proximal tubule enhances sodium reabsorption, contributing to the pathogenesis of hypertension with metabolic syndrome. We describe recent findings regarding the role of proximal tubule transport in the regulation of blood pressure, focusing on the effects of angiotensin II and insulin.

We analyzed a 1- or 3-nm-thick epitaxial Ir lm deposited on an epitaxial (100) ZrN lm on a (100) Si substrate and the interface in terms of crystal structure by re ected high energy electron diraction method and chemical composition by angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS) method. The lm was deposited by sputtering. The (110) Ir lm was epitaxially grown with a diagonal type of Ir (110) // ZrN (100) and Ir<111> // ZrN<100> from the initial growth stage. AR-XPS showed that, near the surface of the Ir lm, ZrO2 and IrO2 components mainly exist while, near the interface, ZrO and IrO2 components mainly exist. It is, also, speculated that the ZrO2 component is dissolved and evaporated gradually or covered with the Ir lm during the deposition.??
Materials Chemical Point of View for Durability Issues in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells
Yokokawa, Harumi,Horita, Teruhisa,Yamaji, Katsuhiko,Kishimoto, Haruo,Brito, M.E. The Korean Ceramic Society 2010 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.47 No.1
Degradation in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell performance can be ascribed to the following fundamental processes from the materials chemical point of view; that is, diffusion in solids and reaction with gaseous impurities. For SOFC materials, diffusion in solids is usually slow in operation temperatures $800\sim1000^{\circ}C$. Even at $800^{\circ}C$, however, a few processes are rapid enough to lead to some degradations; namely, Sr diffusion in doped ceria, cation diffusion in cathode materials, diffusion related with metal corrosion, and sintering of nickel anodes. For gaseous impurities, chromium containing vapors are important to know how the chemical stability of cathode materials is related with degradation of performance. For LSM as the most stable cathode among the perovskite-type cathodes, electrochemical reduction reaction of $CrO_3$(g) at the electrochemically active sites is crucial, whereas the rest of the cathodes have the $SrCrO_4$ formation at the point where cathodes meet with the gases, leading to rather complicated processes to the degradations, depending on the amount and distribution of reacted Cr component. These features can be easily generalized to other impurities in air or to the reaction of nickel anodes with gaseous impurities in anode atmosphere.
Equal - Channel Angular Pressing : A Novel Tool for Microstructural Control
NEMOTO, Minoru,Horita, Zenji,Furukawa, Minoru,Langdon, Terence G . 대한금속재료학회(대한금속학회) 1998 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.4 No.6
The principles of equal-channel angular (ECA) pressing are reviewed. It is demonstrated that this processing procedure is capable of introducing an ultrafine grain size into bulk materials and the precise nature of the microstructure is dependent upon the total strain introduced by the pressing. When the strain is sufficiently high, it is possible to achieve very high tensile ductilities at high strain rates, thereby providing the potential for substantially increasing the viability of superplastic forming in the metal forming industry.
Inhaled Corticosteroid and Secondary Glaucoma: A Meta-analysis of 18 Studies

Purpose Guidelines and systematic reviews frequently warn of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS)-induced glaucoma. However, most of the published studies deny it. Methods We performed a systematic review of randomized, cohort, nested-case control, cross-sectional studies by using Meta-analyses of Observational Studies in Epidemiology statement. Four major databases, PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Search Manager, and the Web of Science Core Collection as well as meta-analysis were used. Studies comparing incidence, prevalence and intraocular pressure (IOP) between patients who were treated with and without ICSs were included. A random-model meta-analysis was performed using the inverse variance method. Results Out of 623 studies screened, 18 with 31,665 subjects were finally included. No significant difference between the 2 groups was observed for crude glaucoma incidence (odds ratio [OR], 0.95; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.86–1.04; P = 0.26; I 2 = 0%; P for heterogeneity = 0.57) as a primary endpoint, adjusted glaucoma incidence (OR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.65–1.24; P = 0.64), crude prevalence (OR, 1.82; 95% CI, 0.23–14.19; P = 0.57), adjusted prevalence (OR, 1.22; 95% CI, 0.50–2.96; P = 0.66), IOP change during ICS treatment (mean difference [MD] +0.01 mmHg; 95% CI, −0.19–0.20; P = 0.95), and single measurement IOP (MD +0.37 mmHg; 95% CI, −0.24–0.97; P = 0.23). Time-to-event analysis for glaucoma development as one of the secondary endpoints (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.28–0.96) suggested a reverse association between ICS and glaucoma. Conclusions The ophthalmological side effects of ICSs, such as glaucoma and intraocular hypertension, should not be exaggerated.
