        Association of 20 potential ATP2B1‐interacting genes with blood pressure in Koreans

        Plasma membrane calcium‐transporting ATPase 1 (ATP2B1)is associated significantly with blood pressure in Caucasians and Asians. ATP2B1 regulates calcium homeostasis and belongs to the P‐type calcium pump family; several studies have identified diverse proteins that bind to ATP2B1. We hypothesized that ATP2B1 regulates blood pressure through ATP2B1‐interacting genes. To this end, 20 potential ATP2B1‐interacting genes were selected, 197 SNPs of which were analyzed for their association of systolic and diastolic blood pressure. These 20 genes were categorized into 2 groups: ATP2B1‐binding genes and ATP2B1‐cleaving calpain family members. Three ATP2B1‐binding genes (CALM1, NOS1, and PDLIM1)were associated with blood pressure, and a SNP in CALM1(rs2401887) generated the strongest association signal (beta=‐3.60±0.92, p=8.9×10^(‐5) for systolic blood pressure and beta=‐1.40±0.62, p=0.02 for diastolic blood pressure). Of the calpain family members, 3 genes (CAPN6, CAPN9, and CAPN10)were associated with blood pressure, and the CAPN10 SNP rs4676348 yielded the strongest association signal (beta=‐0.88±0.27, p=0.001 for systolic blood pressure and beta=‐0.58±0.18, p=0.015 for diastolic blood pressure). Further, the interaction of CALM1 to ATP2B1 was examined using the blood pressure of individuals who carried both variants of CALM1and ATP2B1 genes. Similarly the interaction of CAPN10 to ATP2B1 was also examined. The CALM1 variant (rs2401887)and CAPN10 variants (rs4676348) appear to decrease blood pressure further in addition to the decrease by the variant (rs17249754) of ATP2B1, which suggests that ATP2B1 might regulate blood pressure through the ATP2B1‐interacting genes CALM1 and CAPN10.

        The true heartache is a condition of severe heartache corresponding to angina pectoris, as recorded from Hwang Jae Nai Kyung. According to the literatural study of true heartache, some results can be acquired, such as follows. 1. The site of the true Heartache, can be divided into two categories, first, its superficial and conscious area is the chest as same as the other heartache. But its inner lesion is the Heart-Meridian as others occupied at the Pericardium-Meridian in stead of the Heart-Meridian. 2. The etiological classification of true heartache, are Cold-evil, Heat-evil, Wind-evil, Blood stasis etc. But its major factor is Cold-evil, more than anything else. 3. The symptomatic signs of true heartache, consist of cyanotic change from hands and feet to phalanges; severe heartache pale complexion with cold breathing and its extreme state can manifestate unceased sweating called as Yang exhaustion.

        Korean Language Writing Education in the Multi-Cultural Society

        The goal of writing could change whether the subject is a mother-tongue learner or a foreign one. This paper is to review Korean language writing education for foreign learners at the Korean beginnerʹs course in the multi-cultural society. Foreign learners should be given some directions as below for writing. In the beginnerʹs course, stroke order and spelling and notation should be comprehensively taught. This is the basis for letter expression and the practice of short‐sentence composition is required to develop into long‐sentences. Here, it should be noted that correction or evaluation is very important in class or for task and performance. In doing so, learners become familiar with writing in his daily life and ultimately gains confidence. Tribble suggests four categories of the role of teacher in writing class for foreign learners and that the referred roles include reader, assistant, evaluator and examinant. The recent trend witnesses that learnerʹs demands are growing in writing class and, especially for beginners, writing tasks for practical use surely heighten his motivation for learning. There are two types of writing activities for beginners. They are mostly concentrated on personal writing and social writing. Personal writing here refers to a diary or daily records, which of them are a means to help memory. Social writing is to build and maintain social relations with family or friends and it includes a personal letter, an invitation, a congratulations card, consolation, telegraph, phone messages. Some activities for writing are dictation, limited writing, guided writing, free writing and so on. Dictation requires precision and free writing needs the most fluentness. In this paper, ‘dictation’ and ‘limited writing’ used in the beginnerʹs step are reviewed. This paper deals with writing education and activities for foreigners taking the beginnerʹs course in Korean in the multi-cultural society. And I also hope that a similar study will be applied to foreigners who are on an intermediate and expert level in Korean.

        Characteristics of Focused Ultrasound Mediated Blood-Brain Barrier Opening in Magnetic Resonance Images

        Objective : The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is an obstacle for molecules to pass through from blood to the brain. Focused ultrasound is a new method which temporarily opens the BBB, which makes pharmaceutical delivery or removal of neurodegenerative proteins possible. This study was demonstrated to review our BBB opening procedure with magnetic resonance guided images and find specific patterns in the BBB opening. Methods : In this study, we reviewed the procedures and results of two clinical studies on BBB opening using focused ultrasound regarding its safety and clinical efficacy. Magnetic resonance images were also reviewed to discover any specific findings. Results : Two clinical trials showed clinical benefits. All clinical trials demonstrated safe BBB opening, with no specific side effects. Magnetic resonance imaging showed temporary T1 contrast enhancement in the sonication area, verifying the BBB opening. Several low-signal intensity spots were observed in the T2 susceptibility-weighted angiography images, which were also reversible and temporary. Although these spots can be considered as microbleeding, evidence suggests these are not ordinary microbleeding but an indicator for adequate BBB opening. Conclusion : Magnetic resonance images proved safe and efficient BBB opening in humans, using focused ultrasound.

      • Replication of the Wellcome Trust genome-wide association study on essential hypertension in a Korean population

        <P>Essential hypertension has a high rate of morbidity and mortality, primarily because of the associated complications. The Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium recently conducted a genome-wide association study and identified six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with essential hypertension. The Family Blood Pressure Program later investigated these six SNPs in an attempt to reproduce the aforementioned associations, but only one such association was found. However, this replication study did not include any Asian patients. Therefore, we investigated the association of the six SNPs with hypertension using 7551 unrelated individuals from the Korean Association REsource, a genome-wide association study based on epidemiological cohorts in Korea. We carried out a logistic regression analysis for hypertension status, and a linear regression analysis with systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure as quantitative traits. Even though two SNPs, rs6997709 and rs7961152, were associated with systolic and diastolic blood pressures, respectively, in the quantitative trait association test, no associations were found using a case-control association test. The Korean Association REsource data consisted of two community cohorts (the Ansung and Ansan areas in Korea). The SNP rs7961152 was found to be associated with hypertension risk (OR (odds ratio) =1.286, CI (confidence interval) 1.012-1.636, P=0.040), but only in the Ansan cohort. This study as well as the Family Blood Pressure Program study show that because of the complexity of the genetic architecture, an association study with a larger sample population may be necessary to identify genetic variants that affect hypertension.</P>

        Relationship between T - wave normalization on exercise ECG and myocardial functional recovery in patients with acute myocardial infarction

        N/A Background: Several studies suggested that T-wave normalization (TWN) in exercise ECG indicates the presence of viable myocardium. But the clinical implication of this phenomenon in patients with acute myocardial infarction who received proper revascularization therapy was not determined. Precisely the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between TWN in exercise ECG and myocardial functional recovery after acute myocardial infarction. Methods: We studied 30 acute myocardial infarction patients with negative T waves in infarct related electrocardiographic leads and who had received successful revascularization therapy. Exercise ECG was performed 10∼14days after infarct onset using Naughton protocol. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to presence (group I; n=14) or not (group II; n=16) of TWN in exercise ECG. Exercise parameters and coronary angiographic findings were compared between groups. Baseline and follow-up (mean 11 months) regional and global left ventricular function was analyzed by echocardiography. Results: Exercise parameters were similar between groups. There was no difference in baseline ejection fraction and wall motion score between group I and II (EF; 56±12% vs 52±11%, p=ns. WMS; 21±3 vs 23±4, p=ns) and it was improved at the tenth month by similar magnitude (group I/group II, EF % change = 12±12% vs 7±6%, p=ns, WMS % change=6±6% vs 7±5%, p=ns). The finding of no relation between TWN and functional recovery was observed also when the patients were analysed according to infarct location and presence or absence of Q-waves. Conclusion: As the exercise-induced TWN in patients with acute myocardial infarction was not related with better functional recovery of dysfunctional regional wall motion and ejection fraction, TWN does not appear to be an indicator of myocardial viability.

        Study on Red and Black Heartwood Properties of Cryptomeria Japonica in Southern Region of Korea

        The heartwood (HW) of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) has usually a reddish color. But some trees have black-colored heartwood (BHW). BHW of Japanese cedar has a low commercial value because of the appearance. Therefore, in this study, a comparative analysis was conducted to evaluate the differences in the physical, mechanical, and inorganic element properties, and decay resistance of red-colored heartwood tree (RHW) and BHW. The physical properties showed significant difference between sapwood (SW) and HW, but there was no significant difference between RHW and BHW. From the results of mechanical properties, no sig-nificant difference was recognized in SW of RHW, HW of RHW, SW of BHW, and HW of BHW. There were decay resistance differences between RHW and BHW in HW, and between HW and SW in both RHW and BHW, respectively. The magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), and calcium (Ca) contents had significant differences between SW and HW in both RHW and BHW. In this present study, the decay resistances and the contents of Mg and K were higher in HW than in SW both for RHW and BHW, while these measurements were lower in RHW than in BHW. Therefore, BHW was considered to be worthy as a high-quality material as RHW.

      • Optimization of Electric Field-assisted Ultrasonication for Disintegration of Waste Activated Sludge

        In the present study, an electric field is applied in order to disintegrate waste activated sludge (WAS). As a preliminary step, feasibility tests are investigated using different applied voltages of 10 to 100 V for 60 min. As the applied voltage increases, the disintegration degrees (DD) are gradually enhanced, thereby the soluble N, P, and carbohydrate concentrations increase simultaneously due to the protein decomposition. Subsequently, an optimization process is conducted using response surface methodology with a Box-Behnken design (BBD). The total solid concentration, applied voltage, and reaction time are selected as independent variables, while the DD is selected as the response variable. The overall results demonstrate that the BBD with an experimental design can be useed effectively in the optimization of the electric field treatment of WAS. In the confirmation test, a DD of 10.26±0.14% is recorded, which corresponds to 99.1% of the predicted response value under the statistically optimized conditions. Finally, the statistic optimization of the combined treatment (electric field + ultrasonication) showed that even though this is limited to highly disintegrated WAS when being applied individually, a high DD of 47.28±0.20% was recorded where the TS concentration was 6,780 mg/l, the strength of ultrasonication was 8.0 W, the applied voltage was 68.4 V, and the reaction time was 44 min. E-SEM images clearly revealed that the application of the electric field is a significant alternative method for the combined treatment of WAS, and this is first attempt to increase disintegration using electric field for combined treatment with ultrasonication.
