Objectives : This is a study of ischemic stroke patients designed for comparing Korean and Western medical treatments and Korean medical treatments alone. Methods : 44 patients were diagnosed by B-MRI scan as having suffered ischemic stroke. They had entered Dong-eui Korean Medicine hospital within seven days of attack, and remained over seven days, all between May 2005 and October 2007. Patients were divided into two groups; a group treated with Korean medical treatments, and another group treated with Korean and Western medical treatments (but in both groups examinations were done and Western medications were given for hypertension, diabetes mellitus and so on) Results : NIHss change one month later was not statistically significant for either groups but the NIHss gap between them was significant. Conclusions : NIHss change one week later was not statistically significant for either group. NIHss change one month later was not statistically significant for either groups but the Korean medical treatment group had a significant NIHss gap more than the Korean and Western medical treatment group.

This paper deals with vision-based elevator button recognition for a robot arm manipulating elevator buttons. The major difficulties in elevator button recognition are the presence of partial occlusion of the target objects and image clutter caused by specular reflection from mirrorlike walls inside the elevator. As a remedy for the elevator button recognition problem in highly complicated settings, we propose a robust button recognition algorithm, which is modularized into feature extraction, initial recognition, and postrefinement modules. In consideration of the diverse button shapes in the form of convex quadrilaterals with rounded button corners, a set of features is specially designed to describe each button contour subject to perspective distortion. A homography-based image transform is also employed for the template matching to achieve a more reliable matching performance. Like a grammar in linguistics, geometric button alignment, plays a key role in the elimination of false positives and the estimation of the missing buttons. The proposed algorithm is extensively tested in a robotic platform to verify effectiveness, robustness, and real-time performance.

Background/Aims: The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has a prognostic value in cardiovascular disease, infection, inflammatory disease, and several malignancies. Therefore, the NLR has a possible predictive value in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but this predictive value has not been validated. Here, we aimed to investigate the possibility of NLR as a predictor of CKD progression. Methods: This retrospective observational study included 141 patients with non-dialysis CKD. The participants were divided into terciles (T1, T2, and T3) according to NLR. The primary outcome was defined as a composite kidney event, which included a decline in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of at least 50% or initiation of renal replacement therapy during the follow-up period. Results: The mean follow-up duration was 5.45 ± 2.11 years. The mean NLRs were 1.35 ± 0.05 in T1 (n = 47), 2.16 ± 0.04 in T2 (n = 47), and 4.29 ± 0.73 in T3 (n = 47). The group with the highest NLR (T3) had higher baseline CKD and serum creatinine and lower eGFR levels than the group with the lowest NLR (T1). The cumulative incidence rate of composite kidney events was significantly higher in T3 compared with T1 (p < 0.001, log-rank test). Cox regression analysis revealed that high NLR was associated with the risk of composite kidney events (adjusted hazard ratio, 3.33; 95% confidence interval, 1.43-7.76). Conclusions: A higher NLR reflects the more advanced stage of CKD and suggests a role for NLR as a biomarker for predicting CKD progression.

This paper presents a method for automatic generation of robot gestures driven by Korean text. To select proper gestures by a robot itself for a given text and to reproduce human-like gestures synchronized with speech, this paper proposes a text-to-gesture system that can be linked with a text-to-speech process. The proposed system consists of morphological analysis, gesture selection, and gesture scheduling modules, and outputs a sequence of motion control commands that enable a robot to reproduce gestural motions for a given text input. We apply the proposed method to some storytelling tasks for a robotic avatar, and evaluate it through a series of questionnaire surveys
Antiapoptotic Effect of Paricalcitol in Gentamicin-induced Kidney Injury

While the anti-apoptotic effect of paricalcitol has been demonstrated in various animal models, it is not yet clear whether paricalcitol attenuates the apoptosis in gentamicin (GM)-induced kidney injury. We investigated the effect of paricalcitol on apoptotic pathways in rat kidneys damaged by GM. Rats were randomly divided into three groups: 1) Control group (n=8), where only vehicle was delivered, 2) GM group (n=10), where rats were treated with GM (150 mg/kg/day) for 7 days, 3) PARI group (n=10), where rats were co-treated with paricalcitol (0.2 Ռg/kg/day) and GM for 7 days. Paricalcitol attenuated renal dysfunction by GM administration in biochemical profiles. In terminal deoxynu-cleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling staining, increased apoptosis was observed in GM group, which was reversed by paricalcitol co-treatment. Immunoblotting using protein samples from rat cortex/outer stripe of outer medulla showed increased Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and cleaved form of caspase-3 in GM group, both of which were reversed by paricalcitol. The phosphorylated Jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK) expression was increase in GM, which was counteracted by paricalcitol. The protein expression of p-Akt and nitro-tyrosine was also enhanced in GM-treated rats compared with control rats, which was reversed by paricalcitol co-treatment. Paricalcitol protects GM-induced renal injury by antiapoptotic mechanisms, including inhibition of intrinsic apoptosis pathway and JNK.

It is very important to monitor the spread of spilled oil for effective response planning. However, the use of traditional response ship or other response equipment for this purpose under wild sea condition such as high wave, fast tide and wind is limited because of physical fatigue and stress of crews. Therefore, the development of an unmanned pollution response vehicle which can monitor the spread of spilled oil under wild sea condition is needed. In this paper, we report the construction of remote control system for super mini-size unmanned pollution response vehicles which consists of RF controller and a GUI-based control consol.

This paper deals with a 3D-pose (orientation and position) estimation problem of a circular object in 3D-space. Circular features can be found with many objects in real world, and provide crucial cues in vision-based object recognition and location. In general, as a circular feature in 3D space is perspectively projected when imaged by a camera, it is difficult to recover fully three-dimensional orientation and position parameters from the projected curve information. This paper therefore proposes a 3D pose estimation method of a circular feature using a coplanar point. We first interpret a circular feature with a coplanar point in both the projective space and 3D space. A procedure for estimating 3D orientation/position parameters is then described. The proposed method is verified by a numerical example, and evaluated by a series of experiments for analyzing accuracy and sensitivity.
