Structural Redundancy Analysis of Old Concrete Bridge with Different Levels of Damage
Heeyoung Lee,Hyukjin Choi,Wonseok Chung 한국방재학회 2017 Journal of Disaster Management Vol.2 No.4
In this study, the structural redundancy of old reinforced concrete bridge was analyzed using a method from the National Cooperative Highway Research (NCHRP) Program Report 406. Structural redundancy evaluation was performed by fracture simulation using an incremental method until the point of bridge collapse. Existing bridge safety assessments are based on structural calculations, and can be reviewed with respect to a flexible range of limits allowable by design standards. Structural redundancy evaluation analyzes the cracking, and usability of a bridge, which are not considered under existing safety assessments. The result of this study shows that structural redundancy evaluation allows the evaluator to assess the safety of bridges by assuming a damage scenario taking into consideration the current bridge condition.
Effect of Recycled Concrete on the Flexural Behavior of Concrete-Filled FRP Tubes
Heeyoung Lee,Hoon Jang,Wonseok Chung 한국콘크리트학회 2019 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.13 No.1
This paper presents the results of short span concrete-filled fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) tubes filled with different recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) replacement ratios. The mechanical response of recycled concrete-filled FRP tubes (RCFFTs) under flexural load was examined to investigate the influence of RCA as an in-filled material. The experimental results were compared with the simplified finite element model to estimate the failure behavior of the test units. RCFFTs with a 100% RCA replacement ratio showed a similar bending behavior compared to natural aggregate concrete-filled FRP tubes. The flexural behavior of 100% recycled aggregate concrete could be complemented and utilized because of the high strength and high stiffness of the FRPs.
Thermal response characterization and comparison of carbon nanotube-enhanced cementitious composites
Lee, Heeyoung,Song, Young Min,Loh, Kenneth J.,Chung, Wonseok Elsevier 2018 Composite structures Vol.202 No.-

Abstract

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) can be integrated with cement-based composites to modify their electrical and thermal characteristics. In this study, the objective is to characterize the thermal characteristics of CNT-based cement mortars cast using two unique CNT mixing methods. The mixing method, CNT content, curing age, and applied electrical excitation were systematically varied during experiments. The results of the temperature tests with the CNT cement mortars indicated that mixing CNTs in sand more effectively dispersed the CNTs throughout the mortar, and thus more effectively modified the thermal characteristics of CNT cement mortar. Furthermore, cross-sectional image analysis using field emission scanning electron microscopy supports increased coherence inside the cement due to strong covalent bonds with C-S-H, a hydrate from the temperature tests.

Post-tension near-surface-mounted strengthening systems of full-scale PSC girders
Lee, Heeyoung,Jung, Woo Tai,Chung, Wonseok Elsevier 2017 Construction & building materials Vol.151 No.-

Abstract

In this paper, a post-tension near-surface mounted (NSM) strengthening system is proposed to strengthening concrete structures with a relatively low amount of labor, without altering their appearance or dimensions. The main objective of this study was to investigate the flexural behavior of a prestressed concrete (PSC) girder using post-tension NSM strengthening systems. Two 21.8-m full-scale PSC girders were fabricated. The behavior of the girders was examined through a four-point loading test up to failure. The test results demonstrated that the post-tension NSM strengthening system was an effective method of increasing the flexural capacity. A finite element analysis model was also developed and verified against a full-scale test result. In addition, parametric studies were conducted to investigate the effects of the prestressing force and the number of grooves in the NSM strengthening system on the behavior of a test unit by nonlinear finite element analyses.

Highlights

The flexural behavior of a PSC girder using post-tension NSM systems was investigated.

The post-tension NSM system was an effective method of increasing the flexural capacity.

A finite element analysis model was verified against a full-scale test result.

Effects of the prestressing force and the number of grooves were examined.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
