In 2021, a total of 27 bacterial strains were isolated from soil, tree bark, moss, wetland, sea sediment, tidal flat, seawater and seaweed within Republic of Korea. Based on the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence (>98.7% sequence similarity), these isolates were assigned to the class Alphaproteobacteria as unrecorded species in Korea. The 27 strains were classified into the 10 families: Maricaulaceae of the order Caulobacterales; Brucellaceae, Methylobacteriaceae, Nitrobacteraceae and Rhizobiaceae of the order Hyphomicrobiales; Micropepsaceae of the order Micropepsales; Rhodobacteraceae of the order Rhodobacterales; Azospirillaceae of the order Rhodospirillales; and Erythrobacteraceae and Sphingomonadales of the order Sphingomonadaceae. There is no official report of these 27 species in Korea. Therefore, we report 27 isolates as unrecorded species, and described isolation sources, Gram-stain reactions, physiological and biochemical properties and morphologies of these strains.

Photobacterium sp. YW2207 was isolated from rainbow trout raised in a fish farm located in Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon Province, South Korea. Based on 16S rRNA sequence analysis and phylogenetic analysis, it was confirmed that Photobacterium sp. YW2207 showed 100% similarity with Photobacterium piscicola and Photobacterium phosphoreum, and 94.6% similarity with P. damselae subsp. damselae. Biochemical analysis revealed that Photobacterium sp. YW2207 is a Gram-negative, motile bacterium with a cell size of 1.5~3×3~5 μm. The bacteria were cultured on nutrient agar, brain heart infusion agar, Muller-Hinton agar, tryptic soy agar, and thiosulfate citrate bile sucrose agar with NaCl concentrations ranging from 0 to 2.5%. The API50CHE and API20E tests indicated lower utilization capabilities compared to the P. damselae strains provided in the API database. Furthermore, unlike most Photobacterium species, Photobacterium sp. YW2207 presented negative for catalase test. Results from the flow cytometric measurement indicated that Photobacterium sp. YW2207 exhibited a more diverse distribution of cell sizes and had larger cell sizes compared with P. damselae subsp. damselae. Minimum inhibitory concentration tests showed that Photobacterium sp. YW2207 had low susceptibility to β-Lactam and aminoglycoside antibiotics, while having high susceptibility to tetracycline, doxycycline, and quinolone antibiotics. Pathogenicity on rainbow trout revealed that an immersion of 1×105 CFU/ml did not cause mortality or clinical symptoms.

Background: Dermatofibroma is a common benign skin neoplasm that is usually easy to recognize, but in some cases its differentiation from atypical dermatofibroma may be difficult. Objectives: To describe the clinical and dermoscopic features of atypical dermatofibromas and to differentiate from typical type according to the above features. Methods: We retrospectively searched the database of patients from Korea University Ansan Hospital from January 2010 to July 2018, who had skin biopsy or excision operation with the resulting pathology report of typical and atypical dermatofibroma. Analysis of the clinical demographics (age, gender, anatomical site etc.) and dermoscopic features was done. Results: Of the 240 patients diagnosed with dermatofibroma, 19 (7.9%) were identified as atypical deramtofibroma. In comparison of clinical features, the atypical type was not significantly different from the typical type. However, dermoscopy findings of four patients with atypical dermatofibroma were analyzed, and These dermoscopic findings are patterns that appear below 6% in typical types. Conclusion: Atypical dermatofibroma is clinically difficult to distinguish from the typical counterpart and biopsy is essential for diagnosis. If dermatofibroma is suspected and exhibits rare dermoscopy findings, it may be an atypical type and should be treated with caution when treating because of the tendency to recur and metastasis.

Benth. & Hook. f ex Trautv. Therefore, in the present study, we evaluated the synergistic effects of <I>Z. jujuba</I> var. <I>spinosa</I> and <I>C. lanceolata</I> on scopolamine-induced memory impairment.</P> <P><B>Materials and methods</B></P> <P>Scopolamine, a cholinergic muscarinic receptor antagonist, was used to induce cognitive dysfunction. We employed several behavioral tasks to estimate the synergistic effect of the seeds of <I>Z. jujuba</I> var. <I>spinosa</I> and the roots of <I>C. lanceolata</I>. In addition, we introduced the Western blotting, the antagonism passive avoidance task to investigate a synergistic effect of an herbal formulation.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>Synergistic effects of a combination of <I>Z. jujuba</I> var. <I>spinosa</I> and <I>C. lanceolata</I> at a 5:1 ratio [(w/w), DHP1402] were observed against cognitive dysfunction in the passive avoidance and Y-maze tasks. DHP1402 also ameliorated memory deficits in a dose-dependent manner in these behavioral tasks, as well as in the Morris water maze task. According to the Western blot results, the phosphorylation levels of protein kinase A (PKA), extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) in the hippocampus were also increased in a synergistic manner after the administration of DHP1402. In addition, we found that the effects of DHP1402 on cognitive function were mediated by <I>N</I>-methyl-<I>D</I>-aspartate (NMDA) receptor signalling, based on the antagonism studies. Furthermore, we found that DHP1402 has inhibitory activity against acetylcholinesterase (AChE).</P> <P><B>Conclusion</B></P> <P>DHP1402 attenuates cholinergic blockade-induced cognitive dysfunction through NMDA receptor modulation, PKA-ERK-CREB pathway activation, and AChE inhibition. Therefore, DHP1402 could be a candidate for alleviating cognitive dysfunction.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
