The Sex Ratio and Density of the Mason bee (Osmia cornifrons) for Apple Pollination
Kyeong Yong Lee,Jung Ae Lee,Hyun Hee Han1,Dong Youl Na,Sun Young Kim,Hyung Joo Yoon 한국응용곤충학회 2017 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2017 No.04
The nesting behavior, reproduction, fruit set and shape of O. cornifrons varied significantly with the released sex ratio of O. cornifrons. A female : male sex ratio of 1 : 2 was resulted in a 3.4 to 6.7 fold higher than other sex ratio in a nesting behavior. A ratio of 1 : 2 resulted in a 1.2-fold nesting rate, which was slightly higher than other nesting rates. Releasing only males resulted in a 2.4-fold greater amount of fruit set in non-pollinated sites. A sex ratio of 1 : 2 gave a slightly higher shape index and a 1.2 to 1.6-fold lower asymmetric index than other sex ratios. There was no significant difference between female release numbers in fruit set, and 100 to 200 females gave a slightly higher shape index than 400 females. Thus, we determined that 200 females should be released per 2,000㎡ and that the sex ratio of females to males should be 1 : 2.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the most sensitive and rapid method for the diagnosis of M.tuberculosis infection. Many reports have shown different methods for mycobacterial DNA extraction, but revealed many differences in simplicity and time-consumption. We studied which method was the best among 7 different ones for DNA extraction from 32 smear-positive sputa, using PCR of targeting 123bp DNA fragment of IS6110. The methods were the following : SDS-Microwave oven method, NaOH Lysis method, Triton X-100, Proteinase K method, Lysis buffer method. SDS-Proteinase K method, Bead Beater method, and Bead Beater/CTAB method. The amplification products were identified by electrophoresis on ethidium bromide-stained agarose gels, and confirmed by restriction enzyme, Southern blot hybridization, and DNA sequencing. All 32 cases were positive (100%) by the 7 different methods. It took 1 hour or more to detect DNA in SDS-Microwave oven method, NaOH Lysis method, and Bead beater/CTAB method. It took 2 hours or less in the others. SDS-Proteinase K method and Bead Beater/CTAB method were simpler and more convinient than the others. These results suggest that SDS-Proteinase K method and Bead Beater/CTAB method might be better than the others for the extraction of mycobacterial DNA in terms of simplicity and time-consumption, although all the methods were sensitive.

Flash pulmonary edema is a term used to describe sudden and recurrent episodes of dyspnea at rest resulting from acute pulmonary venous congestion in the presence of normal or well-preserved left ventricle systolic function. This is often present with bilateral renal artery stenosis or unilateral stenosis of a single kidney. We describe here a case of a 65-year-old man with bilateral renal artery stenosis presenting as flash pulmonary edema. He was diagnosed hypertension, left renal artery stenosis with atrophied left kidney and arteriosclerosis obliterans 10 years ago. He presented to our department with recurrent episodes of dyspnea, pitting edema, and pulmonary congestion of chest x-ray. Serum creatinine level was increased to 4.65 mg/dL. Magnetic resonance angiography of kidney showed bilateral renal artery stenosis with atrophied left kidney. Diethylenetriamene pentaacetat (DTPA) scan showed well functioning of right kidney. He was treated with stenting of right renal artery. After that time serum creatinine decreased to 2.22 mg/dL and the improvement of patient`s symptoms such as dyspnea and pitting edema was observed.

Micrococcus lutus is common gram-positive aerobic cocci present in soil, water, dust, and the skin of humans and animals. A 72-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with a complaint of abdominal pain and a turbid peritoneal dialysate. He was empirically treated with intraperitoneal (IP) cefazolin and ceftazidime. Seven day after admission, Gaffkya species was identified from the peritoneal effluent. He was treated with same organism one month ago and discharged with the dialysis catheter intact. So, we suspected that organism is true pathogen, and identified M. luteus by culture. We changed the antibiotics to cefoxitin, which were given for the total of 14 days. This is the first report of relapsing peritonitis by M. luteus and successful treatment without catheter removal.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution is commonly used to prepare the colon before colonoscopy. This substance is known to cause electrolyte abnormalities such as hyponatremia that can induce the hyponatremic encephalopathy. Hyponatremic encephalopathy is the condition of hyponatremia with various neurologic symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, seizure, and sometimes respiratory arrest. We have experienced a case of acute hyponatremic encephalopathy resulting from ingestion of polyethylene glycol solution for colonoscopy. 55-year-old woman with no history of seizures presented to our emergency department with generalized tonic-clonic seizure and mental change after ingestion of 2 L of PEG solution. Computerized tomography of the brain showed no obvious brain lesions. The most striking biochemical abnormality was hyponatremia; serum sodium concentrations were 115 mmol/L. After correction of the hyponatremia with hypertonic saline for 12 hrs, serum sodium concentration reached 129 mmol/L and her mental status was recovered. Acute hyponatremia should be considered as a possible cause of encephalopathy during preparation for colonoscopy. We concluded that physicians should be aware of this complication and patients should be educated about the appropriate level of water ingestion to avoid acute hyponatremia during preparation for colonoscopy.
Herbal extract THI improves metabolic abnormality in mice fed a high-fat diet

Target herbal ingredient (THI) is an extract made from two herbs, Scutellariae Radix and Platycodi Radix. It has been developed as a treatment for metabolic diseases such as hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, and hypertension. One component of these two herbs has been reported to have anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperlipidemic, and anti-obesity activities. However, there have been no reports about the effects of the mixed extract of these two herbs on metabolic diseases. In this study, we investigated the metabolic effects of THI using a diet-induced obesity (DIO) mouse model. High-fat diet (HFD) mice were orally administered daily with 250 mg/kg of THI. After 10 weeks of treatment, the THI-administered HFD mice showed reduction of body weights and epididymal white adipose tissue weights as well as improved glucose tolerance. In addition, the level of total cholesterol in the serum was markedly reduced. To elucidate the molecular mechanism of the metabolic effects of THI in vitro, 3T3-L1 cells were treated with THI, after which the mRNA levels of adipogenic transcription factors, including C/$EBP{\alpha}$ and $PPAR{\gamma}$, were measured. The results show that the expression of these two transcription factors was down regulated by THI in a dose-dependent manner. We also examined the combinatorial effects of THI and swimming exercise on metabolic status. THI administration simultaneously accompanied by swimming exercise had a synergistic effect on serum cholesterol levels. These findings suggest that THI could be developed as a supplement for improving metabolic status.
