Visual Discomfort and Visual Fatigue

Objective: This study aims to evaluate visual discomfort and visual fatigue caused by watching HMD and smartphones by conducting both subjective and objective measure. Background: With the rapid development of mobile Head-Mounted Display (HMD), the problem of visual discomfort and visual fatigue caused by watching Virtual Reality (VR) contents became a crucial concern for consumers and manufacturers, especially given that the casing of mobile HMD keeps the phone at a specified distance from the lenses that is close to the eyes. Method: Two smartphones were chosen for a preliminary study: LG G5 and Galaxy S7. As for a main study, iPhone 6S and Galaxy S7 were used. After being exposed to the selected clips, participants were asked to answer Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ) and went through optometric tests that measure tear break-up time, spherical equivalent, and contrast sensitivity. Results: The subjective assessments indicate that HMD causes more visual discomfort compared to watching a smartphone. Furthermore, the experimental result confirms that watching a HMD causes more eye dryness compared to smartphones. Conclusion: The result of the study compared visual discomfort and visual fatigue of two different displays, HMD and smartphone, and confirmed that watching HMD causes more visual discomfort and visual fatigue. Application: Ultimately, this study could help manufacturers understand the strengths and weaknesses of different display forms, providing guidance for an effective application of HMD.

본 논문은 음악 연주의 전환학습을 탐구한 연구의 결과물이다. 음악 연주의 전환적 배움을 경험한 전문 연주가이자 교육가를 내러티브 연구 방법으로 인터뷰한 후 분석하여 음악 연주의 전환학습 단계를 개발하였고, 이에 따라 연구의 결과를 도출하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 음악 연주의 전환학습은 연주자의 고유 감각의 개발 및 회복과 관련이 있으며 자기 재교육의 과정을 수반한다. 둘째, 음악 연주의 전환학습은 몸과 마음의 긴밀한 연결성을 회복시키며 실제 연주 소리의 발현에 영향을 미친다. 셋째, 음악 연주의 전환학습은 연주자의 새로운 음악적 정체성과 교육관의 탄생에 영향을 미친다. 이 같은 연구 결과에서 도출한 결론 및 의의는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연주자의 지속적인 성장과 배움은 성인이 된 이후에도 자기 재교육을 통하여 가능할 수 있다. 마지막으로, 음악 연주의 전환학습은 자기 자신의 변화를 통하여 내적 가치와 역량의 확장을 경험한 연주자가 내재적 가치 중심의 음악 연주 교육 패러다임을 제시함으로써 다음 세대에게 음악 연주의 본질적인 의미와 경험을 전수할 수 있다. 이러한 면에서 음악 연주의 전환학습 경험은 음악과 교육의 본질적이며 영속적인 가치의 회복에 일조한다. 본 연구는 국내외 음악교육 분야에서 희소한 질적 자료로서 음악 연주의 전환학습의 가치를 발견하고 도출했다는 데에 그 의의가 있으며 국내 연주학의 생성과 발전에 기여한다. This narrative study explores the musician’s transformative learning experience. For the study, the author collected narratives of a seasoned professional musician through a life-story interview method. The author then analyzed the records utilizing the self-devised transformative learning phases. The study’s result includes the following: First, the musician’s transformative learning can cultivate a universal proprioception centered on instrumental-specific skilled movements. Second, the musician’s transformative learning can restore the soul-body-sound relationship as a musical agent. Third, the musician’s transformative learning can reform musical identity and educational values. The study offers the possibility of professional musician’s lifelong transformation and an intrinsic value-centered music performance education paradigm. This study contributes to underrepresented qualitative performance studies in transformative learning theory and practice.
Anti-melanogenic effect of Water Soluble Royal Jelly on Melanin Biosynthesis

Royal jelly (RJ) is one of the most attractive functional foods that have been a commercial product, especially in dietetics and cosmetics in many countries. However, RJ has been evoked with dermatitis, acute asthma and anaphylaxis because of major RJ proteins. Therefore, to access water soluble royal jelly (WSRJ) that removed allergy-induced proteins as an effective whitening agent for cosmetics and potential external treatment for topical use, we investigated its ability to inhibit melanin biosynthesis. B16F1 cells were treated with 10 nM α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α -MSH) for 48hr, and then were treated with various doses of WSRJ for 36hr. WSRJ (1-10ug/ml) inhibited direct tyrosinase activity and cellular tyrosinase activity, which lead to the decrease of melanin synthesis in α-MSH stimulated B16F1 melanoma cells. In addition, we examined RT-PCR and Western blotting for melanogenesis-related genes such as tyrosinase, tyrosinase related protein 1 (TRP-1) and 2. WSRJ suppressed mRNA and protein expression of tyrosinase, tyrosinase related protein (TRP)-1 and TRP-2 in α-MSH stimulated B16F1 cells, and similar to positive control, arbutin. Our findings suggest that WSRJ induced the downregulation of melanogenesis by inhibiting tyrosinase, TRP-1 and 2 activations. It may serve as a new candidate in the new skin-whitening agents.
