        Immersive Learning Technologies in English Language Teaching: A Meta-Analysis

        The aim of this study was to perform a meta-analysis of the learning outcomes of immersive learning technologies in English language teaching (ELT). This study examined 12 articles, yielding a total of 20 effect sizes. The Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) program was employed for data analysis. The findings revealed that the overall effect size was 0.84, implying a large effect size. Additionally, the mean effect sizes of the dependent variables revealed a large effect size for both the cognitive and affective domains. Furthermore, the study analyzed the impact of moderator variables such as sample scale, technology type, tool type, work type, program type, duration (sessions), the degree of immersion, instructional technique, and augmented reality (AR) type. Among the moderators, the degree of immersion was found to be statistically significant. In conclusion, the study results suggested that immersive learning technologies had a positive impact on learning in ELT.

        Shear stress indicator to predict seismic performance of residential RC buildings

        A large number of residential buildings in regions subjected to severe earthquakes do not have enough load carrying capacity. The most of them have been constructed without receiving any structural engineering attention. It is practically almost impossible to perform detailed experimental evaluation and analytical analysis for each building to determine their seismic vulnerability, because of time and cost constraints. This fact points to a need for a simple evaluation method that focuses on selection of buildings which do not have the life safety performance level by adopting the main requirements given in the seismic codes. This paper deals with seismic assessment of existing reinforced concrete residential buildings and contains an alternative simplified procedure for seismic evaluation of buildings. Accuracy of the proposed procedure is examined by taking into account existing 250 buildings. When the results of the proposed procedure are compared with those of the detailed analyses, it can be seen that the results are quite compatible. It is seen that the accuracy of the proposed procedure is about 80% according to the detailed analysis results of existing buildings. This accuracy percentage indicates that the proposed procedure in this paper can be easily applied to existing buildings to predict their seismic performance level as a first approach before implementing the detailed and complex analyses.

        Immersive Learning Technologies in English Language Teaching: A Systematic Review

        The aim of this study was to examine the trends (e.g., the distribution of the studies by year, country, research methods, and participants’ education level) and fundamental findings [e.g., interaction in Virtual Reality (VR) environments, educational content through VR and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies, learning environment in AR, etc.] regarding immersive learning technologies such as VR and AR in English Language Teaching (ELT) between 2010 and 2019. Employing a systematic review research methodology, data was gathered from 59 academic articles published in the following databases: EBSCOhost, ERIC, Web of Science, and Taylor & Francis. The studies were analyzed using a content analysis approach, and findings demonstrated that immersive learning technologies in ELT came to prominence in 2017. Mixed methods research was the most widely employed research method. The most studied language skill was vocabulary for AR and speaking for VR. The results also revealed advantages and challenges with regards to the use of immersive learning technologies in ELT. Further analysis illustrated the findings related to characteristics of immersive learning technologies in ELT. Based on this review, research and design implications for researchers and practitioners are presented.

        Flipped Learning Research Trends in English as a Foreign Language Classrooms: Systematic Reviews

        본 연구의 목적은 2014년부터 2018년까지 EFL 수업에서의 플립러닝 관련 논문을 체계적으로 연구동향을 분석하고 메타분석을 실시하여 EFL수업에서의 플립러닝 연구동향과 통합된 효과크기를 제시하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 Social Sciences Citation Index(SSCI) 데이터베이스에서 EFL수업에서의 플립러닝 관련 논문을 검색 및 선정작업을 진행하였고, 최종 19개의 논문이 선정되었다. 이 논문들은 체계적 문헌연구방법과 메타분석을 통해 분석되었으며 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 플립러닝의 학업성취도 효과크기는 큰 효과크기로 나타났다. 둘째, 체계적 문헌연구결과 주로 학업성취도가 효과변인으로 사용되었으며, 정의적 변인으로는 플립러닝에 대한 인식, 만족도, 태도 등이 사용된 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 주로 대학생을 학습자로 한 연구들이 많았으며, 연구는 꾸준히 증가된 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과를 토대로 논의와 후속연구들을 위한 시사점을 제안하였다. The purpose of this study was to systematically investigate flipped learning research trends in EFL classrooms and perform a meta-analysis to present the effect size integrated with flipped learning research trends in EFL classrooms between 2014 and 2018. To collect data, articles on the theme of flipped learning in EFL classrooms were searched from Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), and selection criteria were applied, which resulted in selecting the final 19 articles. The articles were analyzed through systematic review and meta-analysis, and the findings are as follows: First, the effect size of flip learning on academic achievement was found to be a large effect size. Second, as a result of systematic review, academic achievement was mainly used as a flipped learning outcome variable, and as affective variables, perception, satisfaction, and attitude about flip learning were used. Third, there were many studies mainly with university students as learners, and the number of studies showed steadily increasing. Based on the results of this study, suggestions for discussion and further studies were proposed.

        Development of carboxymethyl cellulose/chitosan double-layer hydrogel combining myrtle essential oil and thyme honey to enhance antibacterial and mechanical properties

        Bacterial infection and oxidative stress are still mentioned as critical problems for wound treatmentbecause they often cause delays in wound healing. Creating a suitable environment in the wound bedcan speed up its regeneration process. The aim of this study was to fabricate and characterize doublelayerhydrogels based on the biopolymers carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as the first layer and chitosanas the second layer for use as wound dressings. In the second layer of this hydrogel, thyme honey as acarbohydrate compound and myrtle essential oil (MEO) as an herbal combination were added in orderto create antimicrobial and mechanical properties. The creation of a double-layer hydrogel and the presenceof thyme honey and MEO were confirmed by microscopy. An analysis of the structure of the hydrogelshowed its flexibility and excellent mechanical strength. The effects of the MEO and honeycomponents in the double-layer hydrogel resulted in the development of enhanced antibacterial activityand potent antioxidant characteristics. Also, these double-layer hydrogels were evaluated in terms of thein vivo healing process and showed excellent therapeutic performance. In general, these valuable propertiesof double-layer hydrogels make them a promising candidate for wound dressing application.

        The investigation of seismic performance of existing RC buildings with and without infill walls

        One of the important factors is the infill walls in the change of the structural rigidity, ductility, dynamic and static characteristics of the structures. The infill walls are not generally included in numerical analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) structural system due to lack of suitable theory and the difficulty of calculating the recommended models. In seismic regions worldwide, the residential structures are generally RC buildings with infill wall. Therefore, understanding the contribution of the infill walls to seismic performance of buildings may have a vital importance. This paper investigates the effects of infill walls on seismic performance of the existing RC residential buildings by considering requirements of the Turkish Earthquake Code (TEC). Seismic performance levels of residential RC buildings with and without walls in high-hazard zones were determined according to the nonlinear procedure given in the code. Pushover curves were obtained by considering the effect of masonry infill walls on seismic performance of RC buildings. The analysis results showed that the infill walls beneficially effected to the rigidity, roof displacements and seismic performance of the building.

        Physicochemical Characteristics and Fatty Acid Composition of Four Papaya Cultivars Grown under Plastic Greenhouse Conditions

        Some physicochemical characteristics like nutritional values, sugar content, and fatty acid composition (FAs) in fruits of four papaya (Carica papaya L.) cultivars (‘Red Lady’, ‘Sunrise Solo’, ‘Tainung’, and ‘BH-65’) grown under plastic greenhouse conditions in the Mediterranean region of Turkey were evaluated. The chemical characteristics, except acidity in the fruits, significantly varied among the cultivars. Nitrogen (N) was the most abundant mineral in all papaya cultivars and ranged from 0.80 g·100 g-1in ‘Red Lady’ to 1.28 g·100 g-1 in ‘BH-65’ in fresh weight. Potassium (K) and calcium (Ca) were found the highest amount in dry weight. Glucose and fructose were identified as the main sugars in all cultivars. Sucrose was in trace amounts in the three cultivars, but not detectable in cultivar ‘Red Lady’. Twenty-five FAs were detected in the papaya fruits. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were found to be in a highest amounts compared to the saturated fatty acid (SFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). Palmitic (C16:0), oleic (C18:1), and linoleic (C18:2n6) acids were the major fatty acids detected in all cultivars. The results of this study implied that dietary intake of papayas may supply substantial nutrient components necessary for human health.

        Synthesis and Physical Properties of Proton Conducting Polymer Electrolytes Comprising PAM Cross-Linked Flexible Spacers

        The design of novel proton exchange membranes with high conductivity and better dimensional stability has become increasingly important due to the need for applications in different devices. The present work shows the acid-doped and crosslinked polyacrylamide (PAM) networks including flexible spaces. To this end PAM was modified with 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BG) to form PAM35BG and PAM50BG networks, which would afford more space for protonated solvents. The reaction of PAM with BG was monitored by FTIR and 13C CP-MAS NMR. The polymer electrolytes were produced by acid doping at several stoichiometric ratios with respect to the monomer repeat unit of a host polymer. The resulting materials exhibited better thermal, chemical, and electrochemical stabilities and had distinct T g values. Additionally, the pores of the PAM-BG materials were filled with H3PO4 to get PAM35BG0.5H3PO4 and PAM50BG1.0H3PO4. The doping enhanced the proton conductivities of the membranes as high as 0.003 S/cm at 120 oC under an anhydrous atmosphere. The proton diffusion mechanism and the dielectric relaxation were further examined using the complex modulus formalism, M*.
