• Infrastructure-assisted joint power adaptation and routing for heterogeneous vehicular networks

        Hameed Mir, Zeeshan,Ko, Young-Bae,Filali, Fethi,Kim, Jaebeom Elsevier 2019 Computers & electrical engineering Vol.73 No.-

Abstract

In vehicular networks, protocols and algorithms rely on the in-network status information and its delivery via control messages for their operations. Using the same wireless channel for data and control message transmissions consume significant channel capacity and time, thus resulting in performance degradation. In this paper, a multi-tiered, heterogeneous vehicular network architecture is considered consisting of mainly two radio access technologies, i.e., ad hoc and cellular. Based on the concept of infrastructure-assistance, we suggested offloading control messages over the cellular network and data over the ad hoc network. Next, an efficient broadcast algorithm is proposed that exploits predicted connectivity information to decide on transmit power levels for each vehicle. Finally, a joint transmit power adaptation, and routing algorithm is implemented to disseminate data over a multi-hop network. Through extensive simulations, we reported significant performance gains in terms of delay, collision rate, and packet delivery ratio while maintaining lower communication overhead.

      • Reinforced fibrous recycled aggregate concrete element subjected to uniaxial tensile loading

        Hameed, R.,Hasnain, K.,Riaz, M. Rizwan,Khan, Qasim S.,Siddiqi, Zahid A. Techno-Press 2020 Advances in concrete construction Vol.9 No.2

In this study, effect of recycled aggregates and polypropylene fibers on the response of conventionally reinforced concrete element subjected to tensile loading in terms of tension stiffening and strain development was experimentally investigated. For this purpose, concrete prisms of 100 × 100 mm cross section and 500 mm length having one central deformed steel re-bar were cast using fibrous and non-fibrous Recycled Aggregate Concrete (RAC) with varying percentages of recycled aggregates (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) and tested under uniaxial tensile load. For all fibrous RAC mixes, polypropylene fibers were used at constant dosage of 3.15 kg/㎥. Effect of recycled aggregates and fibers on the compressive strength of concrete was also explored in this study. Through studying tensile load versus global axial deformation of composite and strain development in concrete and steel, it was found that replacement of natural aggregates with recycled aggregates in concrete negatively affected the cracking load, tension stiffening and strain development, and this negative effect was observed to be increased with increasing contents of recycled aggregates in concrete. The results of this study showed that it was possible to minimize the negative effect of recycled aggregates in concrete by the addition of polypropylene fibers. Reinforced concrete element constructed using concrete containing 50% recycled aggregates and polypropylene fibers exhibited cracking behavior, tension stiffening and strain development response almost similar to that of concrete element constructed using natural aggregate concrete without fiber.

Microencapsulation of microbial antioxidants from Mucor circinelloides, their physico-chemical characterization, in vitro digestion and releasing behaviors in food

        Hameed Ahsan,Hussain Syed Ammar,Nosheen Shaista,Muhammad Zafarullah,Wu Yang,Ullah Samee,Suleria Hafiz Ansar Rasul,Song Yuanda 한국응용생명화학회 2020 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.63 No.3

This study aimed at increasing the stability of heat-labile and pH-sensitive microbial antioxidants by the microencapsulation. Microbial antioxidants from Mucor circinelloides were microencapsulated. The physico-chemical and powder flowing properties of resulting microcapsules were evaluated. The initial safety studies were evaluated by in vivo acute oral toxicity tests. The bio-accessibility of powders vs. extracts was analyzed in in vitro digestion models with further application of microcapsules to model food system. Physico-chemical properties were significantly different (p < 0.0001) for all microcapsules regardless of their non-substantial variations (p > 0.05) in powder flowing properties. The microencapsulation of extract with 5% whey protein hydrogels (WPHG) + 5% pectin ( TA) showed higher retain-ability of polyphenols accompanying low degradation in gastric and intestinal digestion and with no major toxicity signs. The addition of TA microcapsule did not produce any nutritional, physico-chemical, compositional, and nutritional distinctions in cheese. Microencapsulation proved to be appropriate approach for not only protecting the thermo-labile and pH-sensitive microbial antioxidants but also for enhanced bioavailability, and targeted release of bioactive extracts.

Improvement of Underlay Cooperative Cognitive Networks Bandwidth Efficiency under Interference and Power Constraints

        ( Hameed R. M. Al-mishmish ),( Barbaros Preveze ),( Ahmed Alkhayyat ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2019 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.13 No.11

The definition of the bandwidth efficiency (BE) of cognitive cooperative network (CCN) is the ratio between a number of the licensed slot(s) or sub-channel(s) used by the unlicensed users to transmit a single data packet from the unlicensed transmitter to unlicensed destination, and from unlicensed relay(s) to unlicensed destination. This paper analyzes and improves the BE in the underlay CCN with a new reactive relay selection under interference and power constraints. In other words, this paper studies how unlicensed cooperative users use the licensed network slot(s) or sub-channel(s) efficiently. To this end, a reactive relay selection method named as Relay Automatic Repeat Request (RARQ) is proposed and utilized with a CCN under interference and power constraints. It is shown that the BE of CCN is higher than that of cooperative transmission (CT) due to the interference and power constraint. Furthermore, the BE of CCN is affected by the distance of the interference links which are between the unlicensed transmitter to the licensed destination and unlicensed relay to the licensed destination. In addition, the BE for multiple relays selection over a CCN under interference and power constraints is also analyzed and studied, and it is shown that the BE of CCN decreases as the number of relays increases.

Treatment of Pantothenate-Kinase Neurodegeneration With Baclofen, Botulinum Toxin, and Deferiprone: A Case Report

        Hameed Marya,Siddiqui Fatima,Khan Muhammad Khuzzaim,Tadisetty Sindhura,Gangishetti Prasanna Kumar 대한뇌신경재활학회 2023 뇌신경재활 Vol.16 No.3

Pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by progressive motor symptoms, such as dystonia and spasticity. Classical PKAN is the most common subtype of neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA). Currently, there is no established treatment for PKAN. However, baclofen and botulinum toxin have been reported to improve motor symptoms and ease care in these patients. Additionally, Deferiprone is a well-tolerated iron chelator that has been shown to be effective in reducing brain iron accumulation. In this case report, we present the case of a seven-year-old boy who presented to our ward with spastic gait and extrapyramidal signs. Brain magnetic resonance imaging was performed, which showed features of neurodegeneration secondary to brain iron accumulation with a specific appearance of the eye-of-the-tiger sign. Genetic testing was positive for a homozygous mutation in PANK2, and the diagnosis of early-stage classical PKAN was made. This case report highlights the potent efficacy of baclofen, botulinum toxin, and deferiprone in slowing down the disease progression at an early stage and improving the severity of symptoms.

Borjeson-Forssman-Lehmann Syndrome: Clinical Features and Diagnostic Challenges

        Hameed Marya,Siddiqui Fatima,Sheikh Fahad Hassan,Khan Muhammad Khuzzaim,Admani Bushra,Gangishetti Prasanna Kumar 대한뇌신경재활학회 2023 뇌신경재활 Vol.16 No.3

Borjeson-Forssman-Lehmann syndrome (BFLS) is an X-linked recessive disorder resulting from mutations in the PHF6 gene. The syndrome is characterized by short stature, obesity, hypogonadism, hypotonia, intellectual disability, distinctive facial features, fleshy ears, and finger and toe abnormalities. However, the diagnostic challenge in identifying BFLS remains a topic of interest. In this case report, we present the clinical characteristics of a proband with BFLS, highlighting the additional features of hypotonia, intellectual disability, and distinctive facial features. While no definitive treatment exists for BFLS, patients benefit from specialized education and ongoing supervision from early childhood through adulthood. Symptomatic treatment, including close follow-up, may be necessary for complications such as seizures and hearing problems. Mastectomy or testosterone replacement therapy may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Genetic counseling for X-linkage should be offered to affected families.

Photocatalytic decolourization of dyes on NiO-ZnO nano-composites

        Hameed, Abdul,Montini, Tiziano,Gombac, Valentina,Fornasiero, Paolo Korean Society of Photoscience 2009 Photochemical & photobiological sciences Vol.8 No.5

NiO-ZnO nanocomposite photocatalysts were synthesized by co-precipitation/co-gel formation techniques using potassium hydroxide (KOH), sodium carbonate ($Na_2CO_3$) and oxalic acid ($H_2C_2O_4$) as precipitating agents. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was employed for the determination of crystallite size and phase purity, while BET surface areas were estimated by nitrogen physisorption analysis. The photocatalytic activities of the NiO-ZnO nanocomposites, evaluated using the photo-decolourization of two structurally different dyes, methyl orange and methylene blue, were correlated with the variation in the crystallite size of the constituents of the composites. All the three synthesized nanocomposites showed appreciable activity for the decolourization of dyes. NiO-ZnO nanocomposite derived by KOH exhibited maximum activity for the decolourization of both the dyes and the decolourization rate of methylene blue was found to be comparable with that of Degussa P-25 $TiO_2$. Finally, the activity of the most active NiO-ZnO composite with relatively large crystallite sizes was compared with the pure components and their physical mixture, synthesized by the identical synthetic route, in the same molar ratio as that of nanocomposite.

Detection of Multiple Potato Viruses in the Field Suggests Synergistic Interactions among Potato Viruses in Pakistan

Hameed, Amir,Iqbal, Zafar,Asad, Shaheen,Mansoor, Shahid The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2014 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.30 No.4

Viral diseases have been a major limiting factor threating sustainable potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) production in Pakistan. Surveys were conducted to serologically quantify the incidence of RNA viruses infecting potato; Potato virus X (PVX), Potato virus Y (PVY), Potato virus S (PVS), Potato virus A (PVA), Potato virus M (PVM) and Potato leaf roll virus (PLRV) in two major potato cultivars (Desiree and Cardinal). The results suggest the prevalence of multiple viruses in all surveyed areas with PVY, PVS and PVX dominantly widespread with infection levels of up to 50% in some regions. Co-infections were detected with the highest incidence (15.5%) for PVX and PVS. Additionally the data showed a positive correlation between co-infecting viruses with significant increase in absorbance value (virus titre) for at least one of the virus in an infected plant and suggested a synergistic interaction. To test this hypothesis, glasshouse grown potato plants were challenged with multiple viruses and analyzed for systemic infections and symptomology studies. The results obtained conclude that multiple viral infections dramatically increase disease epidemics as compared to single infection and an effective resistance strategy in targeting multiple RNA viruses is required to save potato crop.
