The Impact of Global Uncertainty Shocks on Macroeconomics: The Case of Vietnam
Ha Hong TRAN(Ha Hong TRAN ),Vinh Thi Hong NGUYEN(Vinh Thi Hong NGUYEN ),Nam Hoang TRINH(Nam Hoang TRINH ) 한국유통과학회 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.9
The global financial crisis of 2008–2009 and the COVID-19 pandemic that started in 2019 along with the slow and unstable recovery of the global economy have raised concerns about the impact of global uncertainty on the macroeconomics of the countries. The paper used the Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR) model to examine the impact of global uncertainty shocks on Vietnam’s economy from the period 2008–2022. We found that Vietnam’s output dropped following the shock of global uncertainty, the peak was in the third month, and lasted for one year. Inflation in Vietnam had a rapid downturn in the first month, peaked in the seventh month, and took a long time to cease. When the economy experienced the shock of increased global uncertainty, Vietnam’s policy interest rate was adjusted downward. Additionally, we included a long-term interest rate to consider the overall impact of monetary policy into account. A decreasing trend was also found with this rate. The global uncertainty shock effects acted as the aggregate demand shocks, reducing output and inflation as the uncertainty increases and vice versa, thus monetary policy can be used to regulate Vietnam’s economy to deal with negative shocks without the trade-offs between output and inflation as aggregate supply shocks.

Endophytic fungi are promising sources for the production of podophyllotoxin-an important anticancer compound, replacing depleted medical plants. In this study, the endophytes asso- ciated with Dysosma difformis-an ethnomedicinal plant species were isolated to explore novel sources of podophyllotoxin. Fifty-three endophytic fungi were isolated and identified by morphological observation and ITS-based rDNA sequencing, assigning them to 27 genera in 3 divisions. Fusarium was found the most prevalent genus with a colonization frequency of 11.11%, followed by Trametes (9.26%) and Penicillium (7.41%). Phylogenetic trees were constructed for the endophytic fungi community in two collection sites, Ha Giang and Lai Chau, revealing the adaptation of the species to the specific tissues and habitats. Cytotoxic activity of endophytic fungal extracts was investigated on cancer cell lines such as SK-LU-1, HL-60, and HepG2, demonstrating strong anti-cancer activity of six isolates belonging to Penicillium, Trametes, Purpureocillium, Aspergillus, and Ganoderma with IC50 value of lower than 10 mg/mL. The presence of podophyllotoxin was indicated in Penicillium, Trametes, Aspergillus and for the first time in Purpureocillium and Ganoderma via high-performance liquid chromatography, which implied them as a potential source of this anti- cancer compound.

Along with the trend of financial globalization, Vietnam has undergone a process of increasing financial integration. The great capital inflow poses a problem for the monetary policy's ability to follow a planned target during the changes in the global financial markets. This paper aims to examine the impact of financial integration on monetary policy independence in Vietnam and investigate the role of foreign exchange reserves on this relationship. The research borrows from Mundell-Fleming's Trilemma theory. The results show that increasing financial integration reduces the independence of monetary policy in the short term, and foreign exchange reserves have not shown an apparent role in Vietnam. In addition, increasing exchange rate stability has a negative impact on the independence of monetary policy, but it has an impact on growing market confidence and partly supporting the management process of monetary policy in the short term. Therefore, in the long run, Vietnam needs to allow exchange rate flexibility more, but there should not be sudden changes; the size of foreign exchange reserves should be strengthened to facilitate the implementation of an independent monetary policy with an obvious impact in the context of an increasing scale of international capital flows in the future.

The roles of magnesium oxide (MgO) release from solid dispersions (SDs) in simulated gastric fluid (SGF), simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) and water were investigated to elucidate the enhanced dissolution and reduced intestinal damages of telmisartan as a model drug. The polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG 6000) was used to prepare the SDs. Three SDs were prepared: SD1(PEG, MgO, TEL), SD2 (PEG 6000, TEL), SD3 (MgO, TEL). The physical mixture (PM) consisting of SD2 and MgO was also prepared. A binary SD without MgO (SD2) was also prepared for comparison in microenvironmental pH (pH_M) modulation. The faster MgO released, the less control of pH_M and the less enhanced dissolution of TEL were in consequences. SD3 increased dissolution in SIF and water (about 67%). Interestingly, ternary SD1 showed almost complete dissolution in all three media but dissolution of PM was the lowest due to the fast release of MgO and poor modulation of pHM. MgO did not change the drug crystallinity but did have a strong molecular interaction with the drug. Additionally, the SD3-bearing tablet quickly increased pHM but then gradually decreased due to faster release of MgO while the SD1-bearing tablet gradually increased pH_M at all fractional dimensions of the tablet by the MgO slowly released. The pH_M of PM-bearing tablets was not varied as a function of time. Thus, the MgObearing SD1 also minimized gastrointestinal tissue damage caused by the model drug.

α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-HH) was synthesized by salt solution methods to prepare a promising biomaterial for bone tissue repair and regeneration. The successful synthesis of α-HH was evaluated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) scanning. The sterility of α-HH before and after irradiation with gamma ray was firstly confirmed by Colonies Forming Units (CFU) counting assay, to target the surgical grade application. In vitro tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, crystal violet (CV) and acridine orange (AO) staining was performed to assess the initial cytotoxicity and cell attachment ability of α-HH. Further in vivo implantation into rabbit distal femoral condyles defect exhibited the ability of salt solution-synthesized α-HH to promote the localization of osteocytes and osteoblasts, which improve the bone tissue repair and regeneration. The findings suggested that α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate synthesized by salt solution method is a potential material that can be used as bone substitutes.

Objectives: Online misinformation has reached unprecedented levels during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study analyzed the magnitude and sentiment dynamics of misinformation and unverified information about public health interventions during a COVID-19 outbreak in Da Nang, Vietnam, between July and September 2020. Methods: We analyzed user-generated online information about five public health interventions during the Da Nang outbreak. We compared the volume, source, sentiment polarity, and engagements of online posts before, during, and after the outbreak using negative binomial and logistic regression, and assessed the content validity of the 500 most influential posts. Results: Most of the 54,528 online posts included were generated during the outbreak (n = 46,035; 84.42%) and by online newspapers (n = 32,034; 58.75%). Among the 500 most influential posts, 316 (63.20%) contained genuine information, 10 (2.00%) contained misinformation, 152 (30.40%) were non-factual opinions, and 22 (4.40%) contained unverifiable information. All misinformation posts were made during the outbreak, mostly on social media, and were predominantly negative. Higher levels of engagement were observed for information that was unverifiable (incidence relative risk [IRR] = 2.83; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.33–0.62), posted during the outbreak (before: IRR = 0.15; 95% CI, 0.07–0.35; after: IRR = 0.46; 95% CI, 0.34-0.63), and with negative sentiment (IRR = 1.84; 95% CI, 1.23–2.75). Negatively toned posts were more likely to be misinformation (odds ratio [OR] = 9.59; 95% CI, 1.20–76.70) or unverified (OR = 5.03; 95% CI, 1.66–15.24). Conclusions: Misinformation and unverified information during the outbreak showed clustering, with social media being particularly affected. This indepth assessment demonstrates the value of analyzing online “infodemics” to inform public health responses.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Mitochondrial morphology, which is associated with changes in metabolism, cell cycle, cell development and cell death, is tightly regulated by the balance between fusion and fission. In this study, we found that S6 kinase 1 (S6K1) contributes to mitochondrial dynamics, homeostasis and function. Mouse embryo fibroblasts lacking S6K1 (S6K1-KO MEFs) exhibited more fragmented mitochondria and a higher level of Dynamin related protein 1 (Drp1) and active Drp1 (pS616) in both whole cell extracts and mitochondrial fraction. In addition, there was no evidence for autophagy and mitophagy induction in S6K1 depleted cells. Glycolysis and mitochondrial respiratory activity was higher in S6K1-KO MEFs, whereas OxPhos ATP production was not altered. However, inhibition of Drp1 by Mdivi1 (Drp1 inhibitor) resulted in higher OxPhos ATP production and lower mitochondrial membrane potential. Taken together the depletion of S6K1 increased Drp1-mediated fission, leading to the enhancement of glycolysis. The fission form of mitochondria resulted in lower yield for OxPhos ATP production as well as in higher mitochondrial membrane potential. Thus, these results have suggested a potential role of S6K1 in energy metabolism by modulating mitochondrial respiratory capacity and mitochondrial morphology.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> S6 kinase 1 contributes to mitochondrial dynamics, homeostasis and function. </LI> <LI> Glycolysis and mitochondrial respiratory activity was higher in S6K1-KO MEFs. </LI> <LI> The depletion of S6K1 increased Drp1-mediated fission. </LI> <LI> The fission form of mitochondria in S6K1-KO MEFs resulted in lower yield for OxPhos ATP production. </LI> </UL> </P>
