Gastritis cystica profunda (GCP) is a disease characterized by hyperplastic and significant extension of cystic dilatation of the gastric mucous glands, which results in a cystic lesion in gastric submucosa. It often occurs on the part of gastroenterostomy, but can be found in the stomach without any previous surgery. GCP has variable gross finding including solitary polyps, diffuse ones, submucosal tumors, and rare giant gastric mucosal fold. It is difficult to tell GCP from a cancerous lesion by gross finding that the disease demands a necessary tissue biopsy, though GCP is commonly showed as a benign in the progress. We report a case of GCP in polypoid types diagnosed by endoscopic polypectomy.

Gastric angiodysplasia is vascular ectasia in mucosa and submucosa of the gastric wall. It is an uncommon cause of upper gastrointesinal hemorrhage that may occur in the stomach or duodenum. There are many kinds of endoscopic treatments, such as argon plasma coagulation, electrocoagulation, heat probe, and submucosal injection of hypertonic saline mixed with epinephrine for gastric angiodysplasia. However, these treatment methods are associated with high rate of rebleeding. In order to avoid the recurrence, endoscopic band ligation has recently been used as an alternative method for endoscopic treatment of gastric angiodysplasia. We encountered a case of gastric angiodysplasia that presented with overt bleeding and anemia, and was successfully treated with endoscopic band ligation.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Forty-six <I>Salmonella enterica</I> subspecies <I>enterica</I> serovar Enteritidis (<I>S.</I> Enteritidis) strains were isolated from chicken meat, faeces, and eggshells collected from hatcheries throughout Korea. The strains were examined for the presence of antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes. All 46 isolates were resistant to at least one of 21 antibiotics used in this study, 30 (65.2%) were resistant to three or more antimicrobials, and a single remarkable isolate was resistant to 15 antimicrobials. The isolates were primarily resistant to penicillins, sulfisoxazole, streptomycin, tetracycline and quinolones.</P><P>The high rate of resistance in <I>S.</I> Enteritidis strains, sometimes to multiple drugs, may complicate future options for treating human infections. Nineteen of the 21 penicillin resistant isolates carried the <I>bla</I>TEM gene, while one strain, resistant both to penicillins and ceftriaxone, carried the <I>bla</I>CTX-M gene. Thirty-seven of the 45 sulfisoxazole resistant isolates carried <I>sul2,</I> and 23/24 streptomycin resistant isolates carried both <I>strA</I> and <I>strB.</I> All 10 tetracycline resistant isolates carried the <I>tet</I>(A) gene. Most isolates harboured both SPI-1 and SPI-2-associated genes, and the <I>spv</I> operon, which are known to be associated with human infections. The presence of these genes suggests that these strains could give rise to public health problems if dispersed in the general human population.</P>

This study was performed to characterize the chromosomal metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) of Elizabethkingia meningoseptica isolated from Korea and to propose a clustering method of BlaB and GOB MBLs based on their amino acid similarities. Chromosomal MBL genes were amplified by PCR from 31 clinical isolates of E. meningoseptica. These PCR products were then cloned into a vector and electrotransformed into E. coli DH5α. Nucleotide sequencing was performed by the dideoxy chain termination method using PCR products or cloned DNA fragments. Antimicrobial susceptibilities were determined by the agar dilution method. PCR experiments showed that all 31 E. meningoseptica isolates contained both the blaB and the blaGOB genes. DNA sequence analysis revealed that E. meningoseptica isolates possessed seven types of blaB gene, including five novel variants (blaB-9 to blaB-13) and 11 types of blaGOB gene, including 10 novel variants (blaGOB-8 to blaGOB-17). The most common combination of MBL was BlaB-12 plus GOB-17 (n=19). Minimum inhibitory concentrations of imipenem and meropenem for the electrotransformants harboring novel BlaB and GOB MBLs were two- or four-fold higher than those for the recipient E. coli DH5α. BlaB and GOB MBLs were grouped in three and six clusters including fifteen novel variants, respectively, based on amino acid similarities.
Pharmacokinetics and Oral Bioavailability of Paclitaxel Microemulsion in Rats

The objectives of this study were to formulate oral paclitaxel microemulsion and to compare the bioavailability of paclitaxel in the microemulsion formulation from the commercially available $Taxol^{(R)}$ formulation. Paclitaxel microemulsion was formulated with much less amount of Cremophor $EL^{TM}$ as compared with $Taxol^{(R)}$ to reduce severe adverse reactions produced by Cremophor $EL^{TM}$. The area under the plasma concentration-time curve from 0 hr to 24 hr ($AUC_{0-24}$), maximum plasma concentration ($C_{max}$), and relative bioavailability of palcitaxel microemulsion were increased as compared with $Taxol^{(R)}$ after oral administration. The time required to reach $C_{max}\;(T_{max})$ of palcitaxel microemulsion was significantly shorter than $Taxol^{(R)}$ following oral administration. These results suggest the faster intestinal absorption and the enhanced oral bioavailability of paclitaxel in the microemulsion formulation.

<P>Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium was isolated from diarrheic piglets in 2 periods, 2000-2001 (n = 25) and 2005-2006 (n = 17). To compare the characteristics of the isolates collected during the 2 periods, all isolates were tested for antimicrobial resistance, the presence of virulence genes, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns. All 42 isolates were resistant to at least 1 of the 20 antimicrobials tested, and 39 (93%) were resistant to 2 or more antimicrobials. One isolate was resistant to 12 antimicrobials. Profiles of antimicrobial resistance revealed 20 resistance types. Several isolates were also resistant to quinolones and expanded-spectrum cephalosporins. Ten isolates (24%) were resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfonamides, and tetracycline (ACSSuT); only one isolate had been isolated in 2000-2001, indicating that this type of resistance has rapidly disseminated. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays revealed that all the isolates carried invA. Among the 25 strains isolated in 2000-2001, all carried the sipA, sopA, sopD, sopE2, and ssaR genes, and 96% carried sopB and sifA. Among the 17 strains isolated in 2005-2006, all carried sifA, and approximately 90% carried sipA, sopA, sopB, sopD, sopE2, and ssaR. However, only 6 (14%) of the 42 isolates carried spvC. By PFGE analysis, all 42 strains were classified into 4 major clusters, basically by collection period. The genetic similarity according to PFGE suggests that the strains isolated from diarrheic piglets of this region within the same period may be closely related.</P>

The postoperative maxillary retention cyst is a relatively uncommon disease, which usually develops slowly from pathological mucosal remnant in the antrum after Caldwell-Luc's operation. Its main manifestations are tender swelling on cheek, buccal sulcus, and toothache. We experienced 21 cases of postoperative maxillary cyst for recent 7 years. In this study, the clinical manifestations and operation findings were investigated, and histological analysis were performed in detail.
