김경민 ( Kim¸ Gyeongmin ),박세휘 ( Park¸ Sehwi ),홍수민 ( Hong¸ Soomin ),변기용 ( Byun¸ Kiyong ) 안암교육학회 2021 한국교육학연구 Vol.27 No.3
This case study aims to derive practical implications for improving the system at A university by identifying the problems and contextual factors of convergence major implementation from the perspective of participating students majoring in convergence major at A University’s College of Education. To this end, researchers held an interview with 15 students and two professors who are assigned to convergence major at A University. The data analysis was based on Kinosita’s Modified Grounded Theory Approach(M-GTA). From the perspective of learners belonging to college of education, several problems such as ambiguity of interdisciplinary convergence and lack of administrative services were found throughout the implementation of the whole convergence major. In particular, students from college of education who complete convergence majors organized by other colleges were suffering from lack of proper consideration for school internship practice. These difficulties are at the individual level (readiness for convergence majors, career awareness, positive attitude of students accepting new things), lack of interest and support from faculty members, and lack of administrative and financial support for convergence majors from the university. Based on these results, researchers proposed a couple of solutions for the effective operation of convergence major in college of education at A University.
Alteration of RNA Demethylases by Cholesterol Crystals
Tae Won Kim(Tae Won Kim),Gyeongmin Kim(Gyeongmin Kim) 대한약학회 2024 약학회지 Vol.68 No.1
Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the arteries that can lead to cardiovascular diseases. Cholesterol crystals are one of the elements found in atherosclerotic plaques, and they play a significant role in the development and progression of the disease. In this study, we investigated the effects of cholesterol crystals on mRNA modification in macrophages, which are involved in plaque formation and inflammation. We used RAW 264.7 cells, a murine macrophage cell line, and exposed them to cholesterol crystals. We found that cholesterol crystals stimulated the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-1β, IL-6, and TNFα. Furthermore, cholesterol crystals were taken up by the macrophages and were detected within the cells. Interestingly, cholesterol crystals upregulated demethylating enzymes FTO and ALKBH5, which are involved in RNA modification. However, the expression of methyltransferases, including METTL3, METTL14, NSUN2, and WTAP remained unchanged. These results suggest that cholesterol crystals can modulate mRNA modification by affecting demethylating enzymes and pro-inflammatory cytokines, potentially contributing to the development of atherosclerosis. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying cholesterol crystalinduced atherosclerosis may provide new insights into preventive and therapeutic strategies for cardiovascular diseases.

foOBJECTIVES: The reported effects of digital media overuse on physical activity among adolescents are inconsistent. This study examined the association between hours of digital media use and lack of moderate-intensity physical exercise (mPE) according to the type of digital media. METHODS: This study included 1,837 middle school students from the iCURE (Internet user Cohort for Unbiased Recognition of gaming disorder in Early Adolescence) study conducted in Korea. Hours spent using digital media were measured by self-reported daily usage time for Internet games, messengers, social media, and watching game streaming on weekdays. Lack of mPE was defined as performing a minimum of 30 minutes at a time less than twice weekly. Multivariable logistic regression analysis stratified by sex was performed. RESULTS: Among male students, the group with the highest hours of using either Internet games or watching game streaming was more likely to lack mPE than each non-user group. In contrast, among male students, the group using either messengers or social media had a higher rate of mPE compared to each non-user group. Female students showed no association between hours spent using Internet games, messengers, social media, or watching game streaming and a lack of mPE. CONCLUSIONS: Among male middle school students in Korea, the excessive use of Internet games or watching game streaming was associated with a lack of mPE. Thus, guidelines should be established regarding adolescent use of internet games and watching game streaming.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activities of gaseous essential oils (EO gases) against Listeria monocytogenes on the surfaces of a laboratory medium and radish sprouts. We determined the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal lethal concentration (MLC) values of EO gases from eight EOs extracted from basil leaves, carrot seed, cinnamon bark, cinnamon leaves, clove flower buds, oregano leaves, thyme flowers (linalool), and thyme leaves (thymol) against L. monocytogenes on a nutrient agar supplemented with 1% glucose and 0.025% bromocresol purple (NGBA). Oregano, thyme thymol, and cinnamon bark EO gases showed the strongest antilisterial activities (MIC and MLC, 78.1 mu L/L). We also investigated the inhibitory and lethal activities of these gases against L. monocytogenes on the surface of radish sprouts. The number of L. monocytogenes after exposure to EO gases at a >= 156 mu L/L was significantly (P <= 0.05) lower than that of untreated L. monocytogenes. For example, the initial number of L. monocytogenes on the surface of radish sprouts (ca. 6.3 log CFU/g) decreased by 1.4 log CFU/g within 24 h at 30 degrees C and 43% relative humidity (RH) without EO gas treatment, whereas the number of L. monocytogenes after exposure to oregano, thyme thymol, and cinnamon bark EO gases at 156 mu L/L decreased by 2.1, 2.1, and 1.8 log CFU/g, respectively, after 24 h. Although EO gases exerted greater lethal activities at higher concentrations (312 and 625 mu L/L), L. monocytogenes on the surface of radish sprouts was not completely inactivated. The number of L. monocytogenes on sprouts treated with oregano, thyme thymol, and cinnamon bark EO gases at 625 mu L/L decreased by 2.7-3.0 log CFU/g after 24 h at 30 degrees C and 43% RH. Results indicate that EO gases that showed antilisterial activities on a laboratory medium also exhibited reduced lethal activity on the surface of radish sprouts. These findings will be useful when developing strategies to inactivate L. monocytogenes and possibly other foodbome pathogens on sprouts and perhaps other foods using EO gases.
