Endogenous lipid pneumonia in a ringed seal (Pusa hispida subsp. ochotensis)
Gye-Hyeong Woo The Korean Society of Veterinary Science 2024 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.25 No.1
An adult female ringed seal died suddenly and was subsequently examined for diagnostic purposes. The animal's lungs demonstrated mild non-collapsibility and multifocal white to yellow patches. Histopathological examination revealed multifocal pulmonary histiocytosis. Alveoli were filled with numerous foamy macrophages cytoplasm and scattered multinucleated giant cells containing cholesterol clefts. The foamy cytoplasm of the macrophages stained with oil red O stain. Further, lipid droplets within the cytoplasm were detected by electron microscopy. To the author's knowledge, this is the first case report describing the histochemical staining and electron microscopic findings associated with endogenous lipid pneumonia in ringed seal.

A dead whooper swan was found in an area of cropland near a stream and was submitted to the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) in Korea. The affected animal was in relatively good condition. Grossly, the heart was enlarged and had pale and dark red stripes. A white, elongate parasite was seen on the cut surface of the heart. Histopathologically, severe lymphohistiocytic inflammation, myocardial necrosis, many adult heart worms and microfilariae were observed in the myocardium. Hemorrhage, lymphocytic inflammation, mineralization, and myocardial degeneration were also seen around the adult worms. No bacteria or viruses were isolated from the affected bird. The pathological findings indicate that the whooper swan was infected with nematodes, presumably Sarconema eurycerca, resulting in non-suppurative myocarditis.

A 16-year-old female mixed dog was submitted for examination at the pathology division of national veterinary research and quarantine service(NVRQS). Grossly, white or grayish spherical, multinodular, firm to friable masses were present in the tibiofibula to the pharenge area of the right limb, and dysphagia, breathing difficulties and tachypnea were shown. Various-sized white or grayish black masses were scattered in lungs and diaphragm and one mass was observed in the trachea and in the jejunum, respectively. Histopathologically, the neoplastic cells were composed of polygonal or spindle shaped cells with various sized round to oval nuclei and abundant cytoplasm. These cells formed lobules or nests separated by fine connective tissue and contained little amount of melanin pigments. Melanin pigments were stained dark gray or black with Fontana-Masson method. Melanosomes were also ultrastructurally demonstrable by electron microscopy. Based on above results, the present case was diagnosed as canine malignant melanoma originating from the lower limb and digit.
Outbreak of botulism (Clostridium botulinum type C) in wild waterfowl: Seoul, Korea.
Woo, Gye-Hyeong,Kim, Ha-Young,Bae, You-Chan,Jean, Young Hwa,Yoon, Soon-Seek,Bak, Eun-Jung,Hwang, Eui Kyung,Joo, Yi-Seok [Wildlife Disease Association] 2010 JOURNAL OF WILDLIFE DISEASES Vol.46 No.3

Over a 6-day period beginning on 15 October 2008, 93 dead or sick wild waterfowl, including Mallards, Spotbills, and teal species, were found along the shore of a branch stream of the Hangang River, which flows through Seoul, Korea, and were submitted to the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) for diagnosis. Clinically, the affected birds showed flaccid paralysis of the legs and wings and paralysis of the neck. Grossly, no bird showed any lesions, but all had almost empty stomachs. Histopathologic findings included mild lymphocytic hepatitis and mild lymphocytic interstitial nephritis. Clostridium botulinum type C toxin was identified in sera collected from the birds using a mouse bioassay for botulinum toxins; however, no bacteria were isolated from any of the affected birds. In addition, a low-pathogenic avian influenza virus was isolated from two Spotbills, and pesticides such as diazinon and phorate, were detected in seven Mallards. The cause of this outbreak is not clear, but an increase in organic materials from sewage due to drought, increased temperatures, and an increased number of aquatic carcasses resulting from pesticide contamination may have increased the replication of C. botulinum, contributing to the release of botulinum toxins into the waterfowl food chain.

A case of metastatic colonic adenocarcinoma in German shepherd
( Gye Hyeong Woo ),( Jae Hoon Kim ),( In Soon Roh ) 한국수의병리학회 2000 학술대회 Vol.2000 No.-
Intestinal acleilocaciilomas are uncoinmon in dogs, ancl they occur most frecluently in the colon ancl rectum of animals averaging 8-9 years old. Also, they have been reported rarely in cattle, goats, horses ancl swine. This tumors occur slightly higher in males than in females. Boxers, collies, poodles, ancl Gennan shepherds are prediposed. A case of nletastatic colonic adenocarcinoma in a 7-year-old, male, German shepherd. This clog shows progressive weight loss, persistent vomiting and diarrhea, anorexia, and emaciation. Other clinical sign was tenesmus. Glossly, the serosa of colon and mesentery contained gray-white, firm tissue mass which measured approximately 10 X 4 X 3 cm. Spleen has protruded pale red rouilcl to oval mass which is 2 to 50 nlm in cliam~eter. The milky yellow nodules ranging from 2 to 5 mm, were scattered in liver. Pancreas was stickly attached with stomach and peritoneum ancl has firm nodular nmass which is 15 X 5 X 5 cm. Microscopically, the tumor of colon was characterized by solid sheets or nests of well-differentiated to highly anaplastic polyheclral, cuboidal columnar epithelial cells, which form irregular acinar stnlctures. The neoplastic cells infiltrated into the sul~mucosa, the n~uscularis ancl the serosa along lymphatics and vessels. Metastases occurred in stomach, lymph nodes spleen and liver. Basecl on the gross findings ancl histopathologic examination. this tumor was diagnosed as colonic aclenoc, arcinoma.
