Okgi Kim and Jong-Bok Kim. 2015. English much of an N Construction: A Corpus-based Approach. Studies in Modern Grammar 86, 47-70. English much of an N (henceforth, MOA) construction (e.g., It’s not much of a problem.) consists of quantifiers like much, more/less, enough, little and of-an-NP to intensify the indefinite singular degree NP. In this paper, we first review basic properties of the construction, focusing on the relation between the gradability of the NP and its predicativeness. In particular, after investigating authentic corpus data of the MOA, we provide a qualitative and quantitative analysis which allows a constraint-based approach in accounting for various syntactic as well as semantic properties of the construction.

Kim, Do-Hyung,Oh, Young-Kyoon,Jang, Sun-Sik,Kwon, Eung-Gi,Seo, Yong-Joo,Ok, Ji-Un,Park, Keun-Kyu,Lee, Sung-Sill,Kim, Kyoung-Hoon Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2012 Animal Bioscience Vol.25 No.6
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of catechins and wheat bran on growth performance, carcass characteristics and meat color using forty-eight Hanwoo steers. Each steer was randomly assigned to one of four treatments. Treatments were as follows: control, catechins, wheat bran, and catechins+wheat bran (CW). At the end of the feeding trial, blood samples were collected for analysis of hemoglobin and iron concentration, and then steers were slaughtered at a commercial abattoir. Catechins, wheat bran, and CW had no effect on growth performance and carcass characteristics. Percentage of myoglobin in M. longissimus dorsi was not affected by treatments. Percentage of oxymyoglobin was increased (p<0.05) by CW and maintained at the highest level (p<0.05) for CW during meat display time up to 24 h. Percentage of metmyoglobin was the lowest (p<0.05) for CW between 5 and 24 h during display time. Although blood iron concentration was not affected by treatments, total concentration of muscle iron was the lowest (p<0.05) for CW compared with that of other treatments. Therefore, the results of the present study suggest that CW may provide good protection against oxidation of myoglobin, and might be an effective dietary supplement for improving meat color in the late fattening period of Hanwoo steers.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASLBs) are receiving considerable attention due to their safety superiority and high energy density (achieved by bipolar configuration). Inorganic solid electrolytes are explored as a key-enabling material of the ASLBs. However, their critical challenges, including grain boundary resistance, interfacial instability with electrode materials and complicated processability, remain yet unresolved. Here, we demonstrate a new class of gel electrolyte with reversible thixotropic transformation and abuse tolerance as an effective and scalable approach to address the aforementioned longstanding issues. The gel electrolyte consists of (fluoropolymer/cellulose derivative) matrix and liquid electrolyte. The reversible thixotropic transformation is realized via sol-gel transition based on Coulombic interaction of the polymer matrix with liquid electrolyte. This unusual rheological feature allows the gel electrolyte to be printed in various forms. In addition, the gel electrolyte shows low crystallinity, thus playing a viable role in delivering high ionic conductivity. Based on understanding of rheological/electrochemical characteristics of the gel electrolyte, we fabricate a form factor-free pouch-type cell assembled with the gel electrolyte using sequential screen-printing process. The resultant cell shows exceptional safety upon exposure to various harsh abuse conditions, along with decent electrochemical performance.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A new class of gel electrolyte with reversible thixotropic property is demonstrated. </LI> <LI> The gel electrolyte consists of (fluoropolymer/cellulose derivatives) and liquid electrolyte. </LI> <LI> A form factor-free pouch-type cell can also be assembled with the gel electrolyte. </LI> </UL> </P>
Effect of the dielectric constant of a liquid electrolyte on lithium metal anodes
Kim, Ju Young,Shin, Dong Ok,Chang, Taeyong,Kim, Kwang Man,Jeong, Jiseon,Park, Joonam,Lee, Yong Min,Cho, Kuk Young,Phatak, Charudatta,Hong, Seungbum,Lee, Young-Gi Elsevier 2019 ELECTROCHIMICA ACTA Vol.300 No.-
<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Lithium metal is considered one of the most promising anode materials for realizing high volumetric and gravimetric energy density, owing to the high specific capacity (∼3860 mAh g−1) and the low electrochemical potential of lithium (−3.04 V vs. the standard hydrogen electrode). However, undesirable dendritic lithium growth and corresponding instability of the solid electrolyte interphase prevent safe and long-term use of lithium metal anodes. This paper presents a simple electrolyte approach to enhance the performance of lithium metal batteries by tuning the dielectric constant of the liquid electrolyte. Electrolyte formulations are designed by changing the concentration of ethylene carbonate to have various dielectric constants. This study confirms that high ethylene carbonate content in a liquid electrolyte enhances the cycling performance of lithium metal batteries because the electric field intensity applied to the electrolyte is reduced in relation to the polarization of the electrolyte and thus allows smooth lithium plating and formation of a stable solid electrolyte interphase. We believe that this approach provides an important concept for electrolyte system design suitable to lithium metal batteries.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Electric field intensity for lithium plating is derived from interface analysis. </LI> <LI> Electrolytes with different dielectric constants are designed systematically. </LI> <LI> Confirmed enhanced cycling performance of lithium occurs with high EC content. </LI> </UL> </P>
Allyl isothiocyanate reduces liver fibrosis by regulating Kupffer cell activation in rats
KIM, Jeongtae,BANG, Hyojin,AHN, Meejung,CHOI, Yuna,KIM, Gi Ok,SHIN, Taekyun The Japanese Society of Veterinary Science 2018 The Journal of veterinary medical science Vol.80 No.6
<P>Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), a metabolite of the glucosinolate sinigrin, protects the liver of rats injured by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). This study evaluated whether AITC reduces hepatic fibrosis in rats repetitively exposed to CCl4. Serum chemistry showed that AITC (doses of 5 and 50 mg) administered to rats exposed to CCl4 significantly reduced the levels of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activity that were elevated in CCl4-intoxicated rats. The connective tissue in AITC-treated rats was significantly reduced based on Sirius staining. In addition, Kupffer cell activation was significantly reduced in the AITC and CCl4 co-treated groups. Collectively, this study suggests that AITC mitigates hepatic fibrosis in rats repetitively exposed to CCl4 with concurrent regulation of Kupffer cell and monocyte activation.</P>

<P>Water extract (WE) of <I>Cordyceps militaris</I> has been reported to produce antitumor and immunomodulatory activities <I>in vivo</I> and <I>in vitro</I>. However, the therapeutic mechanism has not been known. In this study, we investigated whether water extract of <I>C. militaris</I> induces the phenotypic and functional maturation of dendritic cells (DC). It profoundly increased CD40, CD54, CD80, CD86, and MHC class II expression in murine bone marrow (BM)-derived myeloid DC. Endocytosis was assessed by the uptake of FITC-dextran and FITC-albumin. The ability of unstimulated DC (UT-DC) to uptake dextran and albumin was higher than that of WE- or LPS-stimulated DC (LPS-DC). Also, UT-DC secreted a low concentration of IL-12, while WE- or LPS-DC secreted higher levels of IL-12 than UT-DC. WE not only formed morphologically mature DC and clusters, but also induced predominantly functional maturation. Moreover, WE is shown to promote the cytotoxicity of specific-cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) induced by DC which were pulsed with P815 tumor-lysate during the stage of antigen presentation. These results suggest that DC maturation by WE can play a critical role in the improvement of the immunoregulatory function in patients with impaired host defense.</P>
