Microbubbles with a diameter of 100 μm or less have the characteristics that the smaller the size, the higher the heat and mass transfer coefficient. In this study, we developed a novel microbubble generator (MBG), and experimentally demonstrated the performance of a direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) process using MBG under various operating conditions. The MBG consists of a turbulence promoter (i.e., swirl and spiral flow types), a nozzle, a diffuser, and an air supply port. It was observed that the implementation of microbubbles in the DCMD process improved the permeate flux. In particular, the enhancement in mean permeation flux was more pronounced at lower feed temperatures and higher feed flow rates. Additionally, the effect of air flow rate on the DCMD permeate flux was demonstrated by analyzing the flow characteristics and bubble size distribution.
