        Gymnodinioid Dinoflagellates (Gymnodiniales, Dinophyceae) in the Open Pacific Ocean

        Records of selected gymnodinioid dinoflagellates from the open waters in the vicinity of the Kuroshio and Oyashio Currents, the Philippine, Celebes, Sulu and South China Seas, western and central equatorial and southeast Pacific Ocean are described and illustrated. The species Gymnodinium fusus Schütt, Gyrodinium falcatum Kofoid et Swezy, G. caudatum Kofoid et Swezy, G. sugashimanii J. Cachon et al. and Pseliodinium vaubanii Sournia are considered to be morphotypes of a single species, that until further studies can establish the correct genus, are named G. falcatum. This study is the first to record individuals of G. falcatum with very long curly extensions. Other gymnodinioid dinoflagellates that showed bifurcated hyposomes may be related to Gyrodinium bifurcatum Kofoid et Swezy or cells of thecate dinoflagellates exuviated from their thecae. Some specimens showed a rigid cover, although no discernible thecal plates. In this group, the most common species was Ptychodiscus noctiluca Stein and, for the first time, a micrograph of a tentative specimen of the genus Berghiella Kofoid et Michener is reported. The validity of the genera Berghiella and Balechina Loeblich Jr. et Loeblich III with thick cell covers is discussed. Several species with apical extensions, other unknown taxa with distinctive shapes, and colonial forms are illustrated. The diversity of gymnodinioid dinoflagellates is underinvestigated in the open ocean.

      • Signatures of minor mergers in the Milky Way disc – I. The SEGUE stellar sample

        <P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>It is now known that minor mergers are capable of creating structure in the phase‐space distribution of their host galaxy’s disc. In order to search for such imprints in the Milky Way, we analyse the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE) F/G dwarf and the Schuster et al. stellar samples. We find similar features in these two completely independent stellar samples, consistent with the predictions of a Milky Way minor‐merger event. We next apply the same analyses to high‐resolution, idealized <I>N</I>‐body simulations of the interaction between the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy and the Milky Way. The energy distributions of stellar particle samples in small spatial regions in the host disc reveal strong variations of structure with position. We find good matches to the observations for models with a mass of Sagittarius’ dark matter halo progenitor <IMG src='/wiley-blackwell_img/lap.gif' alt ='less-than or approximately equal-to'/>10<SUP>11</SUP> M<SUB>⊙</SUB>. Thus, we show that this kind of analysis could be used to provide unprecedentedly tight constraints on Sagittarius’ orbital parameters, as well as place a lower limit on its mass.</P>

        OBJECTIVE METRICS FOR VEHICLE HANDLING AND STEERING AND THEIR CORRELATIONS WITH SUBJECTIVE ASSESSMENTS

        −This paper focuses on increasing the available knowledge about correlations between objective metrics and subjective assessments in steering feel and vehicle handling. Linear and non-linear correlations have been searched for by means of linear regression and neural network training, complemented by different statistical tools. For example, descriptive statistics, the t-distribution and the normal distribution have been used to define the 95% confidence interval for expected subjective assessments and their mean, which makes it possible to predict the subjective rating related to a given objective metric and its area of confidence. Single- and multi-driver correlations have been investigated, as well as how the use of different databases and different vehicle classes affects the results. A method for automatizing the search for correlations when using the driver-by-driver strategy is also explained and evaluated. Ranges of preferred objective metrics for vehicle dynamics have been defined. Vehicles with characteristics within these ranges of values are expected to receive a higher subjective rating when evaluated. Finally, linear correlations between objective metrics have been studied, linear dependency between objective metrics has been identified and its consequences have been presented.

        Endoport-assisted microsurgical treatment for a ruptured posterior cerebral artery aneurysm: A technical note

        Posterior Cerebral Artery aneurysms are scarce, yet its territory is frequently associated to large and giant aneurysms. Treatment is mostly a binary option between microsurgical clipping and endovascular coiling. Hybrid approaches are an option too, whereas innovation with less frequent techniques such as endoscope-controlled and endoscope-assisted procedure may provide a safer surgical approach with same successful results. Hereby we report a case of a 53 years old male examined at the ER after presenting generalized seizures and altered state of consciousness. Upon arrival, neurological evaluation revealed homonymous right hemianopia. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a subarachnoid hemorrhage and left parieto-occipital intraparenchymal hemorrhage with intraventricular extension; computed tomography angiogram (CTA) revealed an aneurysm at the left posterior cerebral artery (PCA) in its P4 segment. We performed a vascular exploration with drainage of the occipital and intraventricular hematoma through a single endoscopic port through transulcal approach guided by neuronavigation, in addition to clipping and aneurysmectomy. The combination of microsurgical clipping with previous Endoport-guided endoscopic procedure may be a surgical-operative option that not only may facilitate the approach to the desired lesion, but also provides a safer surgical scenario.

        A comparative study of water-immiscible organic solvents in the production of furfural from xylose and birch hydrolysate

        Furfural (FUR) was produced from xylose using a biphasic batch reaction system. Water-immiscibleorganic solvents such as isophorone, 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF) and cyclopentyl methyl ether(CPME) were used to promptly extract FUR from the aqueous phase in order to avoid the degradation tohumins as largely as possible. The effect of time, temperature, organic solvent and organic-to-aqueousratio on xylose conversion and FUR yield were investigated in auto-catalyzed conditions. Experiments atthree temperatures (170, 190 and 210 C) were carried out in a stirred microwave-assisted batch reactor,which established the optimal conditions for achieving the highest FUR yield. The maximum FUR yieldsfrom xylose were 78 mol% when using CPME, 48 mol% using isophorone and 71 mol% in the case of 2-MTHF at an aqueous to organic phase ratio of 1:1 (v/v). Birch hydrolysate was also used to show the highfurfural yield that can be obtained in the biphasic system under optimized conditions. The present studysuggests that CPME can be used as a green and efficient extraction solvent for the conversion of xyloseinto furfural without salt addition.

        A biorefinery approach to obtain antioxidants, lignin and sugars from exhausted olive pomace

        Exhausted olive pomace (EOP) is the main residue of the pomace olive oil extracting industry. In thiswork, EOP was fractionated into valuable components for valorisation: an aqueous extract rich inhydroxytyrosol and mannitol, lignins with antioxidant properties and fermentable sugars. EOP wasfirstsubjected to water extraction at 85 C for 90 min. Several pretreatments based on liquid hot water andorganosolv with 50% or 60% ethanol (catalysed and uncatalysed with 1% sulfuric acid) were thenevaluated in terms of delignification ability and efficiency for enzymatic hydrolysis of the pretreatedsolids. Once the best conditions had been selected (50 % ethanol-1% sulfuric acid at 130 C for 60 min), anorganosolv lignin (OL) with antioxidant properties was obtained through acid precipitation of thepretreatment liquor. This was compared to the enzymatic hydrolysis lignin obtained in the subsequentstep and to the lignins purified by acid hydrolysis. OL showed a higher total phenolic content andantioxidant activity than the rest of the lignin samples. Chemical differences were also observed thatcould explain the results.

        The Role of Lipids in Development of Allergic Responses

        Most allergic diseases are caused by activation of Th2 type immune responses resulting in the production of specific IgE against proteins found in normally harmless substances such as pollen, mites, epithelia or food. Allergenic substances are composed, in addition to proteins, of other compounds such as carbohydrates and lipids. Those lipids are able to promote the development of Th2-type responses associated with allergy. There are lipids found in pollen, milk or insect venom that are specifically recognized by CD1 restricted unconventional T lymphocytes, which can promote allergic reactions. Furthermore, a large number of allergens are proteins containing hydrophobic parts that specifically bind lipids that are capable to favor allergenic immune responses. Also, lipids associated to substances like pollen, dander, epithelia or the bacteria can act on cells of the innate system, including dendritic cells, which in turn lead to the differentiation of Th2-type clones. Finally, lipids may also influence the ability of allergens to be exposed to the immune system within the oral, respiratory or intestinal mucosa where allergic response occurs with great frequency.

        Trade Integration and Intra-national Business Cycle Synchronization: Evidence from Mexico’s States from 1980 to 2019

        This study documents the adjustment in the business cycles of Mexico’s states that resulted from trade liberalization. It also analyzes the relevance of the various elements that previous studies have proposed as the determining factors of the synchronization of these cycles. Our results reveal that these determinants are relevant throughout the sample period (1980-2019), but their relative importance changes over time as does their synchronization. This may be explained as follows: trade liberalization caused a regional and sectoral reallocation of resources, which in turn led to some states becoming increasingly interlinked based on their economic structures, whereas the remaining states became less synchronized with the former states. This case should be of interest to other developing countries that are dependent on the world’s capital and trade flows and whose regions may respond heterogeneously if they have diverse economic structures as those of Mexico.

        The medium-term consequences of COVID-19 lockdown on lifestyle among Spanish older people with hypertension, pulmonary, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal-diseases, depression, and cancer

        OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the associations of chronic diseases with changes in lifestyle and health behaviours in older people following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown in Spain and compared the differences in changes over time. METHODS: 1,092 participants (80.3± 5.6 years; 66.5% female) from 2 Spanish cohorts were included. Telephone-based questionnaires were conducted to evaluate lifestyle and health risk behaviours at the end of lockdown and 7 months post-lockdown. Participants were classified as having physician-diagnosed chronic diseases based on self-reported data. Cox proportional models adjusted for major confounders were used. RESULTS: Compared to those without the corresponding chronic diseases, older people with hypertension were less likely to report increased alcohol consumption (hazard ratio [HR], 0.73; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.55 to 0.99). Pulmonary diseases were associated with lower risks of increased sedentary time (HR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.39 to 0.86) and worsened sleep quality (HR, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.87), while cardiovascular diseases were associated with a lower risk of decreased sedentary time (HR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.38 to 0.88). Depression was linked to a higher likelihood of improved diet quality (HR, 1.53; 95% CI, 1.00 to 2.36). Cancer pacients were less likely to have worsened sleep quality (HR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.22 to 0.89) but more likely to have reduced their frequency of social contact (HR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.05 to 3.99). CONCLUSIONS: Older people with chronic diseases showed beneficial changes in lifestyle and health risk behaviours after the COVID-19 lockdown. In particular, older people with hypertension, pulmonary disease, and cancer tended to make beneficial lifestyle and health behaviour changes. However, older people with cardiovascular disease and depression engaged in more health risk behaviours.
