Effects of Oxygen and Nutrients on Xylitol and Ethanol Production in Sugarcane Bagasse Hydrolyzates
Juan Francisco Castañón-Rodríguez,José Antonio Portilla-Arias,María Guadalupe Aguilar-Uscanga,Blanca R. Aguilar-Uscanga 한국식품과학회 2015 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.24 No.4
The influence of oxygen and nutrient supplementation on xylitol and ethanol production in a synthetic medium and sugarcane bagasse hydrolyzates using Candida tropicalis IEC5-ITV and Saccharomyces cerevisiae ITV01- RD was investigated for evaluation of bioconversion of pentoses and hexoses present in the lignocellulosic biomass. The best oxygen transfer rate (56.05 mg of O2/L/h) and xylitol and ethanol yields (0.67 and 0.47 g/g, respectively) were obtained in a synthetic medium. A yeast extract had a positive effect on xylitol and ethanol production (0.64 and 0.44 g/g, respectively) at a concentration of 1 g/L. C. tropicalis and S. cerevisiae exhibited not previously observed morphological changes depending on the nutrient composition. Use of sugarcane bagasse hydrolyzates requires a good supply of oxygen and addition of a yeast extract to improve xylitol and ethanol production.

Plants have evolved a variety of mechanisms for responding to environmental cues, which allows them to survive in the presence of limited resources or environmental stresses. One of the most significant growth adaptations plants have attained is tropism, a growth response that involves bending of plant organs toward or away from a stimulus. Roots exhibit hydrotropism in response to moisture gradients, which is thought to be critical in acquiring water and establishing their stand in the soil. However, the mechanism underlying hydrotropism remains unsolved. Here, we report that the no hydrotropic response (nhr1) mutant of Arabidopsis, which is impaired in hydrotropism, is tolerant to drought. The no hydrotropic response phenotype of nhr1 was repressed by AbamineSG,an inhibitor of abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis, indicating that ABA negatively regulates hydrotropism. Furthermore, the content of ABA was higher in nhr1 compared to those of wild type (wt). However, the higher ABA levels in nhr1plants were not due to higher transcript levels of 9-cisepoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED3), since these were diminished compared to those of wt. Our results indicated that the root hydrotropic response of the nhr1 mutant is modulated by ABA and that the higher ABA levels of the mutant might confer it drought resistance.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the associations of chronic diseases with changes in lifestyle and health behaviours in older people following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown in Spain and compared the differences in changes over time. METHODS: 1,092 participants (80.3± 5.6 years; 66.5% female) from 2 Spanish cohorts were included. Telephone-based questionnaires were conducted to evaluate lifestyle and health risk behaviours at the end of lockdown and 7 months post-lockdown. Participants were classified as having physician-diagnosed chronic diseases based on self-reported data. Cox proportional models adjusted for major confounders were used. RESULTS: Compared to those without the corresponding chronic diseases, older people with hypertension were less likely to report increased alcohol consumption (hazard ratio [HR], 0.73; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.55 to 0.99). Pulmonary diseases were associated with lower risks of increased sedentary time (HR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.39 to 0.86) and worsened sleep quality (HR, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.87), while cardiovascular diseases were associated with a lower risk of decreased sedentary time (HR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.38 to 0.88). Depression was linked to a higher likelihood of improved diet quality (HR, 1.53; 95% CI, 1.00 to 2.36). Cancer pacients were less likely to have worsened sleep quality (HR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.22 to 0.89) but more likely to have reduced their frequency of social contact (HR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.05 to 3.99). CONCLUSIONS: Older people with chronic diseases showed beneficial changes in lifestyle and health risk behaviours after the COVID-19 lockdown. In particular, older people with hypertension, pulmonary disease, and cancer tended to make beneficial lifestyle and health behaviour changes. However, older people with cardiovascular disease and depression engaged in more health risk behaviours.
Gastronomic satisfaction of the tourist: empirical study in the Creative City of Popayán, Colombia
Pablo Rodríguez-Gutiérrez,Francisco González Santa Cruz,Luz Stella Pemberthy Gallo,Tomás López-Guzmán 한국식품연구원 2020 Journal of Ethnic Foods Vol.7 No.-
Currently, gastronomy is a fundamental element for tourists to discover the culture and traditions of a destination. The transcendence granted to a culinary experience in a specific place can become a fundamental motivation for the visit and determine the level of satisfaction reached. In this research, the relationship between tourism and gastronomy is analysed in the city of Popayán, Colombia, a city that has received recognition from UNESCO as a Creative City of Gastronomy. To do this, we examine the influence of different dimensions of culinary motivation in the satisfaction with gastronomy that is experienced during the visit. In addition, we analyse the role of tourist attitude towards culinary experience in gastronomy satisfaction. The methodology used in this research is based on partial least squares structural equation modelling. The main results indicate that the importance of the culinary experience of the tourist in the choice of the destination mediates the effect that culinary motivations exercise on the satisfaction with the gastronomy.
Qualitative changes in fetal trabecular meshwork fibers at the human iridocorneal angle
Fumio Hosaka,Jose Francisco Rodríguez-Vázquez,Hiroshi Abe,Gen Murakami,Mineko Fujimiya,Hiroshi Ohguro 대한해부학회 2013 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.46 No.1
We examined a series of changes that occur in the trabecular meshwork fibers of human eyes during fetal development at 12-30 weeks of gestation. At 12 and 15 weeks, the uveal meshwork was stained black with silver impregnation (indicating the predominance of collagen types III and IV) in the endomysium of the ciliary muscle. At 20 weeks, in combination with Schlemm’s canal, a dense fibrous tissue mass corresponding to the trabecular meshwork anlage appeared and was colored black. The anlage was continuous with the corneal endothelium rather than with the ciliary muscle. Until 25 weeks, the trabecular meshwork was identifiable as fragmented fiber bundles that stained red-black, suggesting a mixture of collagen types I, III, and IV. At 30 weeks, half of the ciliary muscle fibers were inserted into the scleral spur and not into the meshwork. Therefore, any contribution of ciliary muscle contraction to the differentiation of the trabecular meshwork would appear to be limited. We hypothesize that an uneven distribution of mechanical stresses in the area of the cornea-sclera junction causes a tear thereby creating Schlemm’s canal and is accompanied by a change in the collagen fiber types comprising the meshwork.
Feedback Control Based on a Sequential Observer-predictor for Systems with Unknown Actuator Delay
David Fernando Novella-Rodríguez,Juan Carlos Tudon-Martínez,Rocio Jasmin Vazquez-Guerra,Juan Francisco Márquez-Rubio 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2022 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.20 No.9
The present work is devoted to the stabilization of linear systems with input delay, where the delay value can be arbitrarily long with respect to the system response. The time-delay is considered unknown or incorrectly modeled. A sequential observer with variable time-delays is designed in order to predict the system states before the delay occurs. The delays in the sequential observer-predictor are updated by means of a delay estimation in order to obtain an accurate state prediction. The stability of the closed-loop system and the convergence of the observers are analyzed by considering the separation principle. Numerical simulations are performed to evaluate the proposed sequential observer-controller under different scenarios.

Currently, greater environmental awareness promotes research and development advances in biodegradable materials; they represent an alternative that decreases the environmental impact caused by traditional synthetic plastics. This study consists of the development and characterization of thermoplastic corn starch-based composites, reinforced with barley straw particles made by thermal compression. The study materials were prepared by using three particle concentrations (5, 10, and 15 %), while the matrix (0 %) was used as a reference. A mechanical evaluation of all samples was carried out, as well as that of their water absorption properties. They were also characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and flammability tests. The inclusion of straw in the thermoplastic matrix increased water absorption and quickened carbon formation, although it also increased its tensile strength (7 MPa) and the Young’s modulus of activity (MOE) (420 MPa) with a 15 % reinforcement. The FTIR analysis highlights the presence of a carbonyl signal (1720 cm-1) caused by a thermal breakdown (caramelization) linked to barley particles. Moreover, X-ray diffraction demonstrated a VA-type crystallinity pattern (anhydrous) within the biocomposites and an increase of the crystallinity index, through incorporating barley particles in the thermoplastic corn starch-based matrix.

Fresh and preserved (type material) specimens of the black ghost chimaera Hydrolagus melanophasma were compared for morphometric characteristics. A molecular comparison was also performed on two mitochondrial gene sequences (12S rRNA and 16S rRNA gene sequences). While significant differences in measurements were found, the differences were not attributable to sexual dimorphism or the quality of the specimens, but to the sample size and the type of statistical tests. The result of the genetic characterization showed that 12S rRNA and 16S rRNA genes represented robust molecular markers that characterized the species.

Undoped and Eu3þ-doped cubic yttria (Y2O3) nanophosphors of good crystallinity, with selective particle sizes ranging between 6 and 37 nm and showing narrow size distributions, have been synthesized by a complex-based precursor solution method. The systematic size tuning has been evidenced by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman scattering measurements. Furthermore, sizemodulated properties of Eu3þ ions have been correlated with the local structure of Eu3þ ion in different sized Y2O3:Eu3þ nanophosphors by means of steady-state and time-resolved site-selective laser spectroscopies. Time-resolved site-selective excitation measurements performed in the 7F0 / 5D0 peaks of the Eu3þ ions at C2 sites have allowed us to conclude that Eu3þ ions close to the nanocrystal surface experience a larger crystal field than those in the nanocrystal core. Under the site-selective excitation in the 7F0 / 5D0 peaks, energy transfer between the sites has also been observed.

Trout production is a growing activity in recent years but requires new alternative sources of feed to be sustainable over time. The objective of this research was to determine the apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and digestible energy (DE) of kañiwa (Chenopodium pallidicaule Aellen), kiwicha (Amaranthus caudatus L), quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd), beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), sacha inchi, (Plukenetia volubilis L) and jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas) meal in juvenile rainbow trout. The experimental diets were composed of a 70% basal diet and 30% of any raw materials. The ADC was determined by the indirect method using insoluble ash as a non-digestible marker. Jumbo squid, sacha inchi and quinoa showed the highest values of ADC (%) of DM (84.5, 73.5 and 69.7), OM (89.1, 78.4 and 72.9), CP (93.2, 98.0 and 90.3), and DE (4.57, 4.15 and 2.95 Mcal/kg DM), respectively. The ADC values for kañiwa, kiwicha and bean were significantly lower. In conclusion, quinoa meal and jumbo squid meal have an acceptable digestibility but sacha inchi meal is a potential alternative for rainbow trout feeding in the future.
