<P>We report a graphene–polymer hybrid nanostructure-based bioenergy storage device to turn on and off biomotor activity in real-time. In this strategy, graphene was functionalized with amine groups and utilized as a transparent electrode supporting the motility of biomotors. Conducting polymer patterns doped with adenosine triphosphate (ATP) were fabricated on the graphene and utilized for the fast release of ATP by electrical stimuli through the graphene. The controlled release of biomotor fuel, ATP, allowed us to control the actin filament transportation propelled by the biomotor in real-time. <P>We report a new strategy to selectively localize and control microtubule translocation via electrical control of microtubules using a microfabricated channel on a functionalized-graphene electrode with high transparency and conductivity. A patterned <I>S</I><I>U</I>-8 film acts as an insulation layer which shields the electrical field generated by the graphene underneath while the localized electric field on the exposed graphene surface guides the negatively charged microtubules. This is the first report showing that functionalized graphene can support and control microtubule motility.</P>

<P>Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) serve as key negative-feedback regulators of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling cascades. However, their roles and regulatory mechanisms in human fungal pathogens remain elusive. In this study, we characterized the functions of two PTPs, Ptp1 and Ptp2, in <I>Cryptococcus neoformans</I>, which causes fatal meningoencephalitis. <I>PTP1</I> and <I>PTP2</I> were found to be stress-inducible genes, which were controlled by the MAPK Hog1 and the transcription factor Atf1. Ptp2 suppressed the hyperphosphorylation of Hog1 and was involved in mediating vegetative growth, sexual differentiation, stress responses, antifungal drug resistance, and virulence factor regulation through the negative-feedback loop of the HOG pathway. In contrast, Ptp1 was not essential for Hog1 regulation, despite its Hog1-dependent induction. However, in the absence of Ptp2, Ptp1 served as a complementary PTP to control some stress responses. In differentiation, Ptp1 acted as a negative regulator, but in a Hog1- and Cpk1-independent manner. Additionally, Ptp1 and Ptp2 localized to the cytosol but were enriched in the nucleus during the stress response, affecting the transient nuclear localization of Hog1. Finally, Ptp1 and Ptp2 played minor and major roles, respectively, in the virulence of <I>C. neoformans</I>. Taken together, our data suggested that PTPs could be exploited as novel antifungal targets.</P>

Pancreatic duct disruption associated with pancreatitis can lead to the development of pseudocysts, pancreatic ascites, and pleural effusion. A 50-year-old male presented with a 1-month history of postprandial epigastric pain. A chest X-ray showed right pleural effusion. Diagnostic thoracentesis revealed an amylase-rich exudate consistent with pancreatic effusion. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography demonstrated a pancreaticopleural fistula tract, and endoscopic retrograde pancreatography confirmed the presence of pancreatic ductal disruption and leakage at the genu portion. The pancreaticopleural fistula was treated by transpapillary pancreatic stenting. Percutaneous drainage of the pleural effusion and octreotide injection were also performed. Follow-up endoscopic retrograde pancreatography at 8 weeks revealed no leakage of contrast media from the main pancreatic duct. Endoscopic pancreatic stenting can be an efficacious nonsurgical treatment of pancreaticopleural fistula following pancreatitis. (Korean J Med 2014;87:455-460)
Structure–Activity Relationships of 6- and 8-Gingerol Analogs as Anti-Biofilm Agents

<P><I>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</I> is a causative agent of chronic infections in immunocompromised patients. Disruption of quorum sensing circuits is an attractive strategy for treating diseases associated with <I>P. aeruginosa</I> infection. In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of gingerol analogs targeting LasR, a master regulator of quorum sensing networks in <I>P. aeruginosa</I>. Structure–activity relationship studies showed that a hydrogen-bonding interaction in the head section, stereochemistry and rotational rigidity in the middle section, and optimal alkyl chain length in the tail section are important factors for the enhancement of LasR-binding affinity and for the inhibition of biofilm formation. The most potent compound <B>41</B>, an analog of (<I>R</I>)-8-gingerol with restricted rotation, showed stronger LasR-binding affinity and inhibition of biofilm formation than the known LasR antagonist (<I>S</I>)-6-gingerol. 자율형 사립고에 대한 보수/진보언론간 정책 내러티브의 차이점 분석: 내러티브 정책모형(Narrative Policy Framework)의 적용

본 연구는 내러티브 정책모형(Narrative Policy Framework: NPF)을 활용하여 이명박 정부 이후 자율형 사립고 정책을 둘러싸고 일어났던 보수/진보언론간 정책 내러티브의 차이점을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 보수/진보를 대표하는 5개 신문사(조선ㆍ중앙ㆍ동아ㆍ경향ㆍ한겨레)의 사설/ 칼럼을 수집하여 NPF가 제시한 구성요소 및 전략 측면에서 어떠한 차이를 보이고 있는지를 분석하였다. 분석결과 내러티브 구성 요소 측면에서 보수/진보언론은 모두 ‘반대하는 정책에 대한 편익’이나 ‘찬성하는 정책에 대한 비용’은 거의 언급하지 않고 ‘반대 정책에 대한 비용’이나 ‘찬성 정책에 대한 편익’ 만 강조하는 모습을 보였다. 특히 ‘영웅’과 ‘악당’을 묘사함에 있어 양자 모두 지지하는 정책에 따라 정 반대의 인물을 활용하는 모습을 보였다. 또한 내러티브 전략의 경우에도 연합이 처한 상황(우세/열세) 에 따라 전략을 활용하는 방식에 차이가 있었다. 열세인 진보언론의 경우 ‘악 의적 상대비방’ 전략과 ‘갈등의 장 확장’ 전략을 주로 사용하고, 우세인 보수언론의 경우 ‘갈등의 장 유지’ 전략을 주로 사용한 것 으로 나타났다. 이러한 본 연구의 결과는 미국에서 수행된 선행연구들의 결과와 대체로 일치하지만, 보수언론의 경우에도 진보언론 못지않게 악의적 상대비방 전략을 빈번히 사용하고 있었다는 점은 차이가 있었다. 이는 NPF 모형의 한국적 맥락화를 위한 보다 정치한 후속연구의 필요성을 시사한다. Applying the Narrative Policy Framework(NPF), this study aims to investigate policy narratives surrounding self-governing private high schools first introduce din Lee Myung-Bak administration. To achieve this purpose, editorials from five major South Korean newspapers( 3 conservative & 2 liberal) are coded and their policy narratives are analyzed. The results indicate that depending upon its ideological orientation and belie f systems each newspaper presents relatively consistent policy stance, utilizing different narrative components and strategies; conservative newspapers support self-governing private high schools whereas liberal ones opposes them . Bas ed on these results, this study identifies the following three as the most not able findings: (1) When it comes to narrative forms, both the conservative and liberal newspapers shape policy narratives by mentioning similar characters as typical heroes and villains. Yet, the conservative side is incline d to feature heroes more frequently while villains tend to dominate the liberal side which provides relatively abundant evidence. (2) In narrative strategies, both conservative and liberal newspapers avoid mention ing the side effects(costs) of the policy they support and exaggerating its benefits. (3) Both sides employ devil s hift as their main narrative strategy, which challenges the results of previous research.
