        Dance Science is a new but fast growing area of research and study. In many ways, dance science is like sports science but where in sport, the goals are quantitative, in dance the goals are qualitative and therefore the extent to which these goals are measurable in dance is an exciting challenge for dance scientists. Dance science is : in investigation of the dancing body through physiology, psychology and biomechanics in order to enhance dance training and optimise performance potential. This presentation will highlight developments in dance science international1y and discuss some of the major research projects that have taken place. Laban pioneered the first Masters degree in dance science (MSc Dance Science) and this presentation will also include an overview of Laban's role in dance science.

        Experimental Demonstration of Energy-Chirp Control in Relativistic Electron Bunches Using a Corrugated Pipe

        <P>The first experimental study is presented of a corrugated wall device that uses wakefields to remove a linear energy correlation in a relativistic electron beam (a “dechirper”). Time-resolved measurements of both longitudinal and transverse wakefields of the device are presented and compared with simulations. This study demonstrates the feasibility to employ a dechirper for precise control of the beam phase space in the next generation of free-electron-lasers.</P>

        The combination of intravenous bevacizumab and metronomic oral cyclophosphamide is an effective regimen for platinum-resistant recurrent ovarian cancer

        Objective: To determine the efficacy, progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) for the combination of intravenous bevacizumab and oral cyclophosphamide in heavily pretreated patients with recurrent ovarian carcinoma. Methods: A retrospective review was performed for all patients with recurrent ovarian carcinoma treated with intravenous bevacizumab 10 mg/kg every 14 days and oral cyclophosphamide 50 mg daily between January 2006 and December 2010. Response to treatment was determined by Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors criteria and/or CA-125 levels. Results: Sixty-six eligible patients were identified. Median age was 53 years. Fifty-five patients (83%) had undergone optimal cytoreduction. All patients were primarily or secondarily platinum resistant at the time of administration of bevacizumab and cyclophosphamide. The median number of prior chemotherapy treatments was 6.5 (range, 3 to 16). Eight patients (12.1%) had side effects which required discontinuation of bevacizumab and cyclophosphamide. There was one bowel perforation (1.5%). Overall response rate was 42.4%, including, complete response in 7 patients (10.6%), and partial response in 21 patients (31.8%), while 15 patients (22.7%) had stable disease and 23 patients (34.8%) had disease progression. Median PFS for responders was 5 months (range, 2 to 14 months). Median OS from initiation of bevacizumab and cyclophosphamide was 20 months (range, 2 to 56 months) for responders and 9 months (range, 2 to 51 months) for non-responders (p=0.004). Conclusion: Bevacizumab and cyclophosphamide is an effective, well-tolerated chemotherapy regimen in heavily pretreated patients with recurrent ovarian carcinoma. This combination significantly improved PFS and OS in responders. Response rates were similar and favorable to the rates reported for similar patients receiving other commonly used second-line chemotherapeutic agents.

        Of Foreign or Domestic Origin? Swedish media reporting on election interference in connection with the 2022 Swedish general election

        Election interference poses a threat to nations around the world. Potential negative effects include depressed public participation in the political process and elections, artificially exaggerated polarization among different groups in society and a decrease in trust among voters for the election system and in the long run, democracy itself. While different forms of interference in the election process is not a new phenomenon, the advent of the Internet has facilitated interference via digital means, originating either outside the nation’s borders or from within. Sweden is no exception to being a subject of attempts of election interference, even though its election system is generally regarded as trustworthy and of a high standard. This study focuses on the 2022 Swedish election and the perceived threats of electoral interference via digital means, as well as claims of interference having taken place, as discussed in Swedish media. The results show that while Swedish media reported on both threats ahead of the election, as well as claims of different forms of interference having taken place, the integrity of Sweden’s election system seems to have remained intact. Of primary concern are issues that can be connected with attempts of interference that have a domestic angle, pertaining primarily to the spread of disinformation online about alleged election fraud.

        A shelf-life study of silica- and carbon-based mesoporous materials

        Mesoporous silica- and carbon-based materials, including bioactive glasses, have proven potential ascomponents of medical devices and as drug carriers. From an application perspective, knowledge aboutthe shelf-life stability of these materials under various conditions is vital. Here, mesoporous bioactiveglasses (MBGs) synthesized by aerosol-assisted spray-drying and by a batch sol–gel method, mesoporoussilicas of SBA-15 type, and mesoporous carbons CMK-1 and CMK-3 have been stored under varying conditions,e.g. at different temperature and relative humidity (RH), and in different storage vessels. Theresults show that the silica-based materials stored in Eppendorfs are sensitive to humidity. Spray driedMBGs decompose within 1 month at a RH >5%, whilst sol–gel MBGs are more stable up to a RH >60%. Changing the storage vessel to sealed glass flasks increases the MBGs lifetime significantly, with nodegradation during 2 months of storage at a RH = 75%. SBA-15 stored in Eppendorfs are more stable comparedto MBGs, and addition of F- ions added during the synthesis affects the material degradation rate. Mesoporous carbons are stable under all conditions for all time points. This systematic study clearlydemonstrates the importance of storage conditions for mesoporous materials which is crucial knowledgefor commercialization of these materials.

        Changing South Korea: Issues of Identity and Reunification in Formulating the Australia-Korea Security Policy, Foreign Policy, and Wider Relationship

        This article argues that Australia must consider the changing attitudes of young people in South Korea toward nationalism, identity and unification when formulating Australian-Korean security and foreign policy. Through an in-depth examination of the South Korean youth and student movement and young people’s changing attitudes to North Korea and unification, I suggest that a change in the nature of nationalism has occurred — a shift from a nationalism based on a peninsula-wide concept of nation, to the emergence of a South Korean nationalism. This has important consequences for policy-makers trying to understand events in South Korea, the Korean peninsula, and wider Northeast Asian region. The evidence for this article comes from the analysis of survey data from the mid-1980s to the present day. For the most part, the survey data used in the analysis is translated and presented in English for the first time. The surveys are informed by face to face interviews with over 60 South Korean students from across the country. These took place in 2009 and 2010 during fieldwork carried out by the author.

      • Interrogating Love: Romance in The Empire Strikes Back and The Force Awakens

        The Star Wars sequel trilogy has improved in its female representation with numbers surpassing the scarce female cast of the original trilogy. The character Leia Organa from the original trilogy is popular among fans for her feminism, but since critics generally disagree, an analysis of Rey, the protagonist of the sequel trilogy, is necessary to determine if the series has improved the quality of its representation. A commonality between the two characters is their sexuality; both Rey and Leia undergo interrogations with implied sexual content, combining sexual assault from the romance genre with interrogations in the science fiction genre. Using theory on interrogatory rape from the romance fiction genre, connections between the two genres are made evident, as well as the feminist potential arising from such a combination. This paper examines the interrogatory scenes between the female characters Rey and Leia and their love interests Kylo Ren and Han Solo using theories of rape in the romance fiction genre, investigating how the character’s reactions can be analyzed for subversive gender performances. Deviating from claims of feminist science fiction as empowered through the hybridity of the human-technological and male-female binaries, subversive gendered performances are instead made possible for Rey through the use of the mystical Force power. Despite her Force sensitivity, the same is not true for Leia, and her submissive reactions in response to interrogatory scenes with the dangerous hero Han Solo align with traditional gender performances from the romance genre. In contrast, subversive gender performances by the character Rey using defiance through both physicality and language indicate achievement of subjectivity in response to her interrogation, demonstrating an improvement in feminist representation within the sequel trilogy.

        Buccal gland within the bucinator muscle

        There are major and minor salivary glands that aid in the digestive process. Major glands are discrete and exist in predictable locations; minor salivary glands are more widespread and usually found dispersed in the mucosa of the mouth. Glands have their own contractile abilities, which allow them to secrete products without the assistance of vasculature or skeletal, or smooth muscle. This study will describe a cadaveric histological specimen in which an ectopic buccal gland was embedded within bucinator muscle fibers. Potential causes and explanations for this finding will be discussed, as well.
