Hybrid SDF-HDF Cluster-Based Fusion Scheme for Cooperative Spectrum Sensing in Cognitive Radio Networks

( Ayman A. El-saleh ),( Mahamod Ismail ),( Mohd Alaudin Mohd Ali ),( Israna H. Arka ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2010 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.4 No.6

In cognitive radio networks, cooperative spectrum sensing schemes are proposed to improve the performance of detecting licensees by secondary users. Commonly, the cooperative sensing can be realized by means of hard decision fusion (HDF) or soft decision fusion (SDF) schemes. The SDF schemes are superior to the HDF ones in terms of the detection performance whereas the HDF schemes are outperforming the SDF ones when the traffic overhead is taken into account. In this paper, a hybrid SFD-HDF cluster-based approach is developed to jointly exploit the advantages of SFD and HDF schemes. Different SDF schemes have been proposed and compared within a given cluster whereas the OR-rule base HDF scheme is applied to combine the decisions reported by cluster headers to a common receiver or base station. The computer simulations show promising results as the performance of the proposed scenario of hybridizing soft and hard fusion schemes is significantly outperforming other different combinations of conventional SDF and HDF schemes while it noticeably reduces the network traffic overhead.

Combined Time Synchronization And Channel Estimation For MB-OFDM UWB Systems

        ( Aymen M. Kareem ),( Ayman A. El-saleh ),( Masuri Othman ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2012 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.6 No.7

Symbol timing error amounts to a major degradation in the system performance. Conventionally, timing error is estimated by predefined preamble on both transmitter and receiver. The maximum of the correlation result is considered the start of the OFDM symbol. Problem arises when the prime path is not the strongest one. In this paper, we propose a new combined time and channel estimation method for multi-band OFDM ultra wide-band (MB-OFDM UWB) systems. It is assumed that a coarse timing has been obtained at a stage before the proposed scheme. Based on the coarse timing, search interval is set (or time candidates). Exploiting channel statistics that are assumed to be known by the receiver, we derive a maximum a posteriori estimate (MAP) of the channel impulse response. Based on this estimate, we discern for the timing error. Timing estimation performance is compared with the least squares (LS) channel estimate in terms of mean squared error (MSE). It is shown that the proposed timing scheme is lower in MSE than the LS method.

Evolutionary Algorithm-based Space Diversity for Imperfect Channel Estimation

( Zienab Pouladmast Ghadiri ),( Ayman A. El-saleh ),( Gobi Vetharatnam ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2014 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.8 No.5

In space diversity combining, conventional methods such as maximal ratio combining (MRC), equal gain combining (EGC) and selection combining (SC) are commonly used to improve the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) provided that the channel is perfectly estimated at the receiver. However, in practice, channel estimation is often imperfect and this indeed deteriorates the system performance. In this paper, diversity combining techniques based on two evolutionary algorithms, namely genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are proposed and compared. Numerical results indicate that the proposed methods outperform the conventional MRC, EGC and SC methods when the channel estimation is imperfect while it shows similar performance as that of MRC when the channel is perfectly estimated.

Individual disturbance and neighborhood mutation search enhanced whale optimization: performance design for engineering problems

        Qiao Shimeng,Yu Helong,Heidari Ali Asghar,El-Saleh Ayman A,Cai Zhennao,Xu Xingmei,Mafarja Majdi,Chen Huiling 한국CDE학회 2022 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.9 No.5

The whale optimizer is a popular metaheuristic algorithm, which has the problems of weak global exploration, easy falling into local optimum, and low optimization accuracy when searching for the optimal solution. To solve these problems, this paper proposes an enhanced whale optimization algorithm (WOA) based on the worst individual disturbance (WD) and neighborhood mutation search (NM), named WDNMWOA, which employed WD to enhance the ability to jump out of local optimum and global exploration, adopted NM to enhance the possibility of individuals approaching the optimal solution. The superiority of WDNMWOA is demonstrated by representative IEEE CEC2014, CEC2017, CEC2019, and CEC2020 benchmark functions and four engineering examples. The experimental results show that thes WDNMWOA has better convergence accuracy and strong optimization ability than the original WOA.

On the Performance of Cooperative Spectrum Sensing of Cognitive Radio Networks in AWGN and Rayleigh Fading Environments

( Wasan Kadhim Saad ),( Mahamod Ismail ),( Rosdiadee Nordin ),( Ayman A. El-saleh ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2013 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.7 No.8

For the purpose of enhancing the spectrum efficiency, cognitive radio (CR) technology has been recently proposed as a promising dynamic spectrum allocation paradigm. In CR, spectrum sensing is the key capability of secondary users in a cognitive radio network that aims for reducing the probability of harmful interference with primary users. However, the individual CRs might not be able to carry out reliable detection of the presence of a primary radio due to the impact of channel fading or shadowing. This paper studies the cooperative spectrum sensing scheme as means of optimizing the sensing performance in AWGN and Rayleigh channels. Results generated from simulation provide evidence of the impact of channel condition on the complementary receiver operating characteristic (ROC). Based on the results, it was found that with constant local SNRs at the secondary users, the probability of missed detection (Pm) of cooperative spectrum sensing in a cognitive radio network, calculated using a closed form expression, can be significantly minimized. Thus, the paper illustrates that improvement of the detection performance of the CR network can be achieved by establishing a centralized cooperation among neighboring cognitive radio users. Finally, verification of the validity of the fusion schemes utilized for combining the individual CR decisions is provided.

Intelligent coordinated self-optimizing handover scheme for 4G/5G heterogeneous networks

        Abdulraqeb Alhammadi,Wan Haslina Hassan,Ayman A. El-Saleh,Ibraheem Shayea,Hafizal Mohamad,Wasan Kadhim Saad 한국통신학회 2023 ICT Express Vol.9 No.2

Estimating the location of a target in search-and-rescue operations is quite challenging when the target is not responding. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the passive target localization problem using mobile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), where multiple mobile UAVs receive the time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) measurements from the source UAV. Unlike traditional TDOA for static UAVs, the problem becomes more challenging when considering the mobility of UAVs. Therefore, we propose a novel TDOA model for target localization with mobile UAVs. We also measure the performance limit inequality between its Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) and the mean-squared error (MSE).

Minimizing Sensing Decision Error in Cognitive Radio Networks using Evolutionary Algorithms

( Mohsen Akbari ),( Md. Kamal Hossain ),( Mohsen Riahi Manesh ),( Ayman A. El-saleh ),( Aymen M. Kareem ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2012 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.6 No.9

Cognitive radio (CR) is envisioned as a promising paradigm of exploiting intelligence for enhancing efficiency of underutilized spectrum bands. In CR, the main concern is to reliably sense the presence of primary users (PUs) to attain protection against harmful interference caused by potential spectrum access of secondary users (SUs). In this paper, evolutionary algorithms, namely, particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA) are proposed to minimize the total sensing decision error at the common soft data fusion (SDF) centre of a structurally-centralized cognitive radio network (CRN). Using these techniques, evolutionary operations are invoked to optimize the weighting coefficients applied on the sensing measurement components received from multiple cooperative SUs. The proposed methods are compared with each other as well as with other conventional deterministic algorithms such as maximal ratio combining (MRC) and equal gain combining (EGC). Computer simulations confirm the superiority of the PSO-based scheme over the GA-based and other conventional MRC and EGC schemes in terms of detection performance. In addition, the PSO-based scheme also shows promising convergence performance as compared to the GA-based scheme. This makes PSO an adequate solution to meet real-time requirements.

Resource Allocation in Spectrum Sharing ad-hoc Cognitive Radio Networks Based on Game Theory: An Overview

        ( Omar B. Abdul-ghafoor ),( Mahamod Ismail ),( Rosdiadee Nordin ),( Ayman Abd El-saleh ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2013 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.7 No.12

The traditional approach of fixed spectrum allocation to licensed networks has resulted in spectrum underutilisation. Cognitive radio technology is envisioned as a promising solution that can be used to resolve the ineffectiveness of the fixed spectrum allocation policy by accessing the underutilised spectrum of existing technologies opportunistically. The implementation of cognitive radio networks (CRNs) faces distinct challenges due to the fact that two systems (i.e., cognitive radio (CR) and primary users (PUs)) with conflicting interests interact with each other. Specially, in self-organised systems such as ad-hoc CRNs (AHCRNs), the coordination of spectrum access introduces challenges to researchers due to rapid utilisation changes in the available spectrum, as well as the multi-hop nature of ad-hoc networks, which creates additional challenges in the analysis of resource allocation (e.g., power control, channel and rate allocation). Instead, game theory has been adopted as a powerful mathematical tool in analysing and modelling the interaction processes of AHCRNs. In this survey, we first review the most fundamental concepts and architectures of CRNs and AHCRNs. We then introduce the concepts of game theory, utility function, Nash equilibrium and pricing techniques. Finally, we survey the recent literature on the game theoretic analysis of AHCRNs, highlighting its applicability to the physical layer PHY, the MAC layer and the network layer.

Load balancing in 5G heterogeneous networks based on automatic weight function

        Gures Emre,Shayea Ibraheem,Saad Sawsan Ali,Ergen Mustafa,El-Saleh Ayman A,Ahmed Nada M.O. Sid,Alnakhli Mohammad 한국통신학회 2023 ICT Express Vol.9 No.6

Load balancing is a major challenge in heterogeneous networks (HetNets) consisting of 5G and 6G ultra-dense small cells with long-term evaluation advanced (LTE-A) networks. A key factor in achieving efficient load balancing during user mobility is creating appropriate optimisation for handover control parameters (HCP). This paper proposes a coordinated load balancing algorithm for LTE-A/fifth generation (5G) HetNets. The algorithm automatically optimises HCP settings for a given user based on three bounded functions (the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the user equipment (UE), the number of physical resource blocks (PRBs) per UE and the UE’s speed) as well as their automatic weight levels. A two-step target cell determination strategy is implemented according to the cell load level and RSRP criteria, ensuring that users are handed over to low-loaded target cells. A new HO procedure that considers the pilot signal power is also proposed, which includes the number of PRBs per UE and the RSRP. Cells with freer PRBs are prioritised in user association to provide load balance and enhanced throughput. The proposed load balancing algorithm is compared with five other load balancing algorithms selected from the literature. The simulation results reveal that under various mobile speed scenarios, the proposed load balancing scheme enhances network performance in terms of load level, throughput, spectral efficiency and call dropping ratio (CDR).
