Hole doping of MgB2C2, a MgB2 related [B/C] layered compound

        Takao Mori,Eiji Takayama-Muromachi 한국물리학회 2004 Current Applied Physics Vol.4 No.2-4

The MgB2 related borocarbide MgB2C2 was synthesized and various attempts were made to hole dope the material. MgB2C2 is orthorhombic (space group Cmca a= 10:92 A,b= 9:45 A,c= 7:45 A) with [B/C] nets. Successful synthesis was carried out frompure elements by a solid state reaction method in a closed environment. Theoretical calculations indicate the possibility of holedoping of MgB 2C2 to be favorable for superconductivity due to the at band (in theTYdirection) similar to one in MgB2. Holedoping of MgB 2C2 was attempted by two routes: (1) substitutional dope of Mg with alkali metals, (2) doping in the [B/C] nets, andas a result Li doping was indicated to be feasible with a possible semiconductor to metal transition induced. High pressure synthesisof (Mg,Li)B2C2 was also attempted but only resulted in formation of the LiBC phase.

A Safe Surgical Procedure for Old Distractive Flexion Injuries of the Subaxial Cervical Spine

        Osamu Kawano,Takeshi Maeda,Eiji Mori,Itaru Yugue,Takayoshi Ueta,Keiichiro Shiba 대한척추외과학회 2017 Asian Spine Journal Vol.11 No.6

Study Design: Retrospective review. Purpose: To describe a safe and effective surgical procedure for old distractive flexion (DF) injuries of the subaxial cervical spine. Overview of Literature: Surgical treatment is required in old cases when a progression of the kyphotic deformity and/or persistent neck pain and/or the appearance of new neurological symptoms are observed. Since surgical treatment is more complicated and dangerous in old cases than in acute distractive-flexion cases, the indications for surgery and the selection of the surgical procedure must be carefully conducted. Methods: To identify a safe and effective surgical procedure, the procedure selected, reason(s) for its selection, and associated neurological complications were investigated in 13 patients with old cervical DF injuries. Results: No neurological complications were observed in nine patients (DF stage 2 or 3) who underwent the anterior-posterior-anterior (A-P-A) method and two patients (DF stage 1) who underwent the posterior method. It was initially planned that two patients (DF stage 2) who underwent the P-A method would be treated using the Posterior method alone; however, anterior discectomy was added to the procedure after the development of a severe spinal cord disorder. Conclusions: The A-P-A method (anterior discectomy, posterior release and/or partial facetectomy, reduction and instrumentation, anterior bone grafting) is considered to be a suitable surgical procedure for old cervical DF injuries.

      • Influence of scent on car driver stress: Taste in scents, difference o f reaction by sex

        Kazuaki Onoue,Takahiro Wada,Shun’ichi Doi,Eiji Kobayashi,Masayuki Karaki,Nozomu Mori 대한인간공학회 2010 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2010 No.5

Long term monotonous driving has often been found to decrease the driver’s arousal level and effect perception, cognition and judgment. In this study, seven kinds of scent were used as olfactory stimulation. The influence of scent on the driver’s psychosomatic state was examined using a fixed-based driving simulator by through biological measurements including electrocardiogram. Taste in scents is so individual that blood flow of brain activity is measured in order to estimate the reaction of scent on the subject. As for brain activity of olfactory cortex, the multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy (MNIRS) has been shown to enable the evaluation of changes in hemodynamic. The MNIRS was also used to monitor the activity of the frontal cortex as mirrored by hemodynamic responses subjected to olfactory stimulation. The experiments were executed for several female and male subjects. The difference of reaction by sex is also observed.

      • Study on Voltage Regulation in Distribution System Using Electric Vehicles - Control Method Considering Dynamic Behavior

Mitsukuri, Yuki,Hara, Ryoichi,Kita, Hiroyuki,Watanabe, Keiichi,Mori, Kenjiro,Kataoka, Yasuhiro,Kogure, Eiji,Mishima, Yuji The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2014 The Journal of International Council on Electrical Vol.4 No.2

A surge of needs for the low carbon society promotes a spread of electric vehicle (EV). EVs could be charged at night simultaneously, as a result, severe voltage drop may happen. The authors have proposed the method which can compensate the voltage drop caused by EV charging by means of adjusting charging schedules and controlling reactive power. And, we have confirmed the effectiveness of the method by estimating steady state in order to figure out the limitation of the control capability. In this paper, from a practical viewpoint, we propose the method to consider dynamic behavior. In this method, the EV can not only finish charging effectively but also control minimal reactive power to keep admissible voltage with monitoring system voltage.

Clinical Influence of Cervical Spinal Canal Stenosis on Neurological Outcome after Traumatic Cervical Spinal Cord Injury without Major Fracture or Dislocation

        Tsuneaki Takao,Seiji Okada,Yuichiro Morishita,Takeshi Maeda,Kensuke Kubota,Ryosuke Ideta,Eiji Mori,Itaru Yugue,Osamu Kawano,Hiroaki Sakai,Takayoshi Ueta,Keiichiro Shiba 대한척추외과학회 2016 Asian Spine Journal Vol.10 No.3

Study Design: Retrospective case series. Purpose: To clarify the influence of cervical spinal canal stenosis (CSCS) on neurological functional recovery after traumatic cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) without major fracture or dislocation Overview of Literature: The biomechanical etiology of traumatic CSCI remains under discussion and its relationship with CSCS is one of the most controversial issues in the clinical management of traumatic CSCI. Methods: To obtain a relatively uniform background, patients non-surgically treated for an acute C3–4 level CSCI without major fracture or dislocation were selected. We analyzed 58 subjects with traumatic CSCI using T2-weighted mid-sagittal magnetic resonance imaging. The sagittal diameter of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) column, degree of canal stenosis, and neurologic outcomes in motor function, including improvement rate, were assessed. Results: There were no significant relationships between sagittal diameter of the CSF column at the C3–4 segment and their American Spinal Injury Association motor scores at both admission and discharge. Moreover, no significant relationships were observed between the sagittal diameter of the CSF column at the C3-4 segment and their neurological recovery during the following period. Conclusions: No relationships between pre-existing CSCS and neurological outcomes were evident after traumatic CSCI. These results suggest that decompression surgery might not be recommended for traumatic CSCI without major fracture or dislocation despite pre-existing CSCS.

        MPK9 and MPK12 function in SA-induced stomatal closure in <i>Arabidopsis thaliana</i>

        Khokon, Md. Atiqur Rahman,Salam, Mohammad Abdus,Jammes, Fabien,Ye, Wenxiu,Hossain, Mohammad Anowar,Okuma, Eiji,Nakamura, Yoshimasa,Mori, Izumi C.,Kwak, June M.,Murata, Yoshiyuki Informa UK (TaylorFrancis) 2017 Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry Vol.81 No.7

<P>Salicylic acid (SA) induces stomatal closure sharing several components with abscisic acid (ABA) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) signaling. We have previously shown that two guard cell-preferential mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), MPK9 and MPK12, positively regulate ABA signaling and MeJA signaling in Arabidopsis thaliana. In this study, we examined whether these two MAPKs are involved in SA-induced stomatal closure using genetic mutants and a pharmacological, MAPKK inhibitor. Salicylic acid induced stomatal closure in mpk9 and mpk12 single mutants but not in mpk9 mpk12 double mutants. The MAPKK inhibitor PD98059 inhibited SA-induced stomatal closure in wild-type plants. Salicylic acid induced extracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, intracellular ROS accumulation, and cytosolic alkalization in the mpk9, mpk12, and mpk9 mpk12 mutants. Moreover, SA-activated S-type anion channels in guard cells of wild-type plants but not in guard cells of mpk9 mpk12 double mutants. These results imply that MPK9 and MPK12 are positive regulators of SA signaling in Arabidopsis guard cells.</P>
