      • A new theoretical model for the dynamical analysis of Nano-Bio-Structures

        The conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy at nanoscale using piezoelectric nanowire arrays has been in detail shown by deflection of nanowires. Recently it has performed an analytical model, both at classical and at quantum level, for describing the most important quantities concerning transport phenomena; the model predicts interesting peculiarities, as high initial charge diffusion in nanodevices constituting by nanowires and permits also in particular to deduce interesting informations about the devices sensitivity, focusing on the correlation between sensitivity and high initial diffusivity of these materials at nanometric level.

        Times are changing in Italian healthcare and Traditional and Non Conventional Medicine has become increasingly relevant to medical practice. With this comes an increasing need for guidelines. As the use of Traditional and Non Conventional Medicine has increased in Italy, so has the need for high standards in education in this field (outside of biomedicine and the dominant health system) among medical students, medical doctors and medical educators. The rise of Traditional and Non Conventional Medicine is so relevant for medical practice and health care in Italy; the time calls for a change. The article describes this new setting in regards to education in Acupuncture within the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Italy’s oldest private school.

      • A preliminary simulation for the development of an implantable pulsatile blood pump

        A preliminary study of a new pulsatile pump that will work to a frequency greater than 1 Hz, is presented. The fluid-structure interaction between a Newtonian blood flow and a piston drive that moves with periodic speed is simulated. The mechanism is of double effect and has four valves, two at the input flow and two at the output flow; the valves are simulated with specified velocity of closing and reopening. The simulation is made with finite elements software named COMSOL Multiphysics 3.3 to resolve the flow in a preliminary planar configuration. The geometry is 2D to determine areas of high speeds and high shear stresses that can cause hemolysis and platelet aggregation. The opening and closing valves are modelled by solid structure interacting with flow, the rhythmic opening and closing are synchronized with the piston harmonic movement. The boundary conditions at the input and output areas are only normal traction with reference pressure. On the other hand, the fluid structure interactions are manifested due to the non-slip boundary conditions over the piston moving surfaces, moving valve contours and fix pump walls. The non-physiologic frequency pulsatile pump, from the viewpoint of fluid flow analysis, is predicted feasible and with characteristic of low hemolysis and low thrombogenesis, because the stress tension and resident time are smaller than the limit and the vortices are destroyed for the periodic flow.

        Causes of Failure of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction and Revision Surgical Strategies

        Purpose: Long-term outcomes of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction are good or excellent; however, 0.7%-20% of patients suffer from recurrent instability due to graft failure. The purpose of this paper was to analyse failure aetiology and the possibilities of revision surgical strategies, with a description of our experience. We obtained optimal and good results in most of our patients. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 42 patients who underwent revision surgery (43 revisions) due to relapsing instability after ACL reconstruction between 2006 and 2015. We used allografts in 39 cases and autografts in 4 cases. Results: The 85.7% of the patients obtained optimal results (normal knee; group A) and the 7.2% obtained good results (nearly normal knee; group B) according to the International Knee Documentation Committee score. The most frequent failure causes were traumatic events, non-anatomic tunnel placement, and lack of graft incorporation. Conclusions: A correct revision surgery requires accurate patient evaluation and knee imaging. Preoperative planning starts with the identification of the cause of failure of the primary reconstruction. Then, the most suitable procedure should be determined for each case. It is also important to accurately inform the patient of all the complexity of an ACL revision surgery even if it is a procedure with high rates of excellent and good outcomes.

        HIV Infection Control: A Constructive Algorithm for a State-based Switching Control

        The control of the HIV infection is considered in the framework of the optimal control theory within the problem of resource allocation. A control action, changing the intervention strategy on the basis of the updated situations, is proposed. The switching instants are not fixed in advance but are determined along with the final control time. A constructive algorithm to compute iteratively the switching control is outlined. The solutions obtained provide interesting and promising results.

      • Structural analysis and health monitoring of twentieth-century cultural heritage: the Flaminio Stadium in Rome

        This work deals with structural analysis and health monitoring (SHM) of a valuable structure of the twentiethcentury cultural heritage: the Flaminio Stadium in Rome. The Flaminio is one of the iconic reinforced concrete sport facilities designed and built by Pier Luigi Nervi for the 1960 Olympic Games of Rome. In view of the foreseen SHM activity, the structural analysis of the Flaminio Stadium is firstly reported by presenting either preliminary analyses, aimed at studying the stadium response under different modeling hypotheses, and a three-dimensional Finite Element (FE) model of the entire structure. It turns out that the main grandstand canopy plays a pivotal role in the Flaminio's structural response to seismic excitation; in addition, its state of conservation raises some concern. Therefore, the structural modeling and dynamic characterization of the canopy is deepened in the paper. Its unusual features, such as geometry, material characteristics and dynamic interplay with the hosting main reinforced concrete frames are thoroughly assessed. To validate the FE results, characterized by a high modal density, and investigate the response of the structure, dynamic tests carried out under operating conditions are presented. The output-only collected data are used to calibrate the initial FE model. The predicted static and dynamic responses of the canopy are eventually exploited to guide the design of a tailored monitoring system. The relevant data management is framed in a heritage building information modeling (HBIM) context. This study draws a viable process for a proactive structural conservation strategy of twentieth-century heritage buildings and infrastructures.

        Pushover Analyses of Slender Cantilever Bridge Piers with Strength and Ductility Degradation

        Reinforced concrete bridge piers are often subject to spatially non-uniform deterioration whichtypically produces strength and ductility degradation. When piers are subject to deterioration, the sectional response is no longer uniform and the determination of the pushover curves from sectional response is no longer immediate. This paper proposes a simplified procedure to accomplish this task for RC bridge cantilever piers. The method is simplified only with respect to geometric nonlinearities and yields an accurate estimate of the ultimate displacement, free of numerical issues typical of fiber-based finite elements. The procedure is based on an iterative approach to enforce the element equilibrium under P-Delta effects induced by vertical loads and can consider arbitrary deterioration patterns through the specification of different moment-curvature response along the elevation. After validating the approach with experimental results, a parametric analysis of the influence of sectional strength and ductility degradation is carried out for the case study of a rectangular hollow RC pier. Results show that significant variations of the pier equivalent plastic hinge length can be expected because of the occurrence of deterioration in the lower part of the pier. Moreover, paper provides quantitative measure of the extent of the strength and ductility degradation.

        <P>Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PtdIns[4,5]P2) is a phosphoinositide involved in a variety of cellular functions, including signal transduction, organelle trafficking, and actin dynamics. Although the role of PtdIns[4,5]P2 in endocytosis is well established, the precise trafficking steps relying on normal PtdIns[4,5]P2 balance in the endosomal pathway have not yet been elucidated. Here we show that decrease in intracellular PtdIns[4,5]P2 levels achieved by the overexpression of the 5-phosphatase domain of synaptojanin 1 or by siRNA knock-down of PIP5Ks expression lead to severe defects in the internalization of transferrin as well as in the recycling of internalized transferrin back to the cell surface in COS-7 cells. These defects suggest that PtdIns[4,5]P2 participates in multiple trafficking and/or sorting events during endocytosis. Coexpression of the PtdIns[4,5]P2 synthesizing enzyme, PIP5KI gamma, was able to rescue these endocytic defects. Furthermore, decreased levels of PtdIns[4,5]P2 caused delays in rapid and slow membrane recycling pathways as well as a severe backup of endocytosed membrane. Taken together, our results demonstrate that PtdIns[4,5]P2 availability regulates multiple steps in the endocytic cycle in non-neuronal cells.</P>

        An outbreak of neonatal enteritis in buffalo calves associated with astrovirus

        Background: Enteritis of an infectious origin is a major cause of productivity and economic losses to cattle producers worldwide. Several pathogens are believed to cause or contribute to the development of calf diarrhea. Astroviruses (AstVs) are neglected enteric pathogens in ruminants, but they have recently gained attention because of their possible association with encephalitis in humans and various animal species, including cattle. Objectives: This paper describes a large outbreak of neonatal diarrhea in buffalo calves (Bubalus bubalis), characterized by high mortality, which was associated with an AstV infection. Methods: Following an enteritis outbreak characterized by high morbidity (100%) and mortality (46.2%) in a herd of Mediterranean buffaloes (B. bubalis) in Italy, 16 samples from buffalo calves were tested with the molecular tools for common and uncommon enteric pathogens, including AstV, kobuvirus, and torovirus. Results: The samples tested negative for common enteric viral agents, including Rotavirus A, coronavirus, calicivirus, pestivirus, kobuvirus, and torovirus, while they tested positive for AstV. Overall, 62.5% (10/16) of the samples were positive in a single round reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for AstV, and 100% (16/16) were positive when nested PCR was performed. The strains identified in the outbreak showed a clonal origin and shared the closest genetic relationship with bovine AstVs (up to 85% amino acid identity in the capsid). Conclusions: This report indicates that AstVs should be included in a differential diagnosis of infectious diarrhea in buffalo calves.
