The Chronotopes in Caramelo and Comfort Woman

Death and love are in the loophole of methodology of the oppressed. In Comfort Woman, Beccah become a recorder of the lives of the spirits rather than a writer of obituaries which is her job after the death of her mother. She, inheriting Soon Hyo's stories, becomes a weaver in the chronotope of the dialogic heteroglossia inserting her mother's painful past into the stories of oppressed women in the history through storytelling and magicorealism. Celaya also learns to love her mestiza or Chicana identities that can subvert binary ideologies of (post) colonialism and patriarchy. However, in the future, she will have to painfully go through the inner struggles of crossing borders of “Chicano, indio, American Indian, mojado, mexicanos, immigrant Latino, Anglo in power, working class Anglo, Black, Asian” with differential consciousness. However, these crossing imaginary or physical borderlines as differential movement will bring about the coalition of the women from the third world, as Anzaldúa implies. This is, I argue, what ethnic women writers have pursued and will pursue in the chronotopes of dialogic heteroglossia.
On a Way to Material Marxism: On or Over Post-Marxism

This paper delineates how, with advent of (post) structural Marxism, ontic Marxism almost perishes but sustains its life through compromise with post-Marxism. To investigate this, the paper analyzes Louis Althusser’s structural Marxism and Fredrick Jameson's understanding of Althusser’s theories to reveal both theories’ attempt to reexamine and criticize ontic Marxists’ ideas of subject, totality, and history utilizing (post) structural linguistics and relevant theories. Yet, their efforts turns out to be partially successful because of inevitable paradoxes and contradictions in their own projects. Though Althusser tries to re-read and find a true Marxism getting over vulgar one and Jameson tries to reinterpret Althusser’s structural Marxism to suggest a compromised model of post-post-Marxism, it is still questionable if their projects turn out to be successful. Delving into these contentions, this paper pries into the polemics of language, subject, and history, such notions for which structural Marxists have been frequently criticized. In response to the critiques, post-Marxists have defended their positions condescendingly reiterating the recounts of how obsolete subject's language and discourse in structuralism and structural Marxism become. The next examinations target the idea of history, the most problematic concept both for structural Marxists and their critics because historicity and materialism may not be reconciled in contemporary Marxist's theory in spite of Fredrick Jameson's eclectic efforts. This contradiction also suggests that Marxism may not be ontic anymore if we do not accept the ambiguity of history and real praxis. Lastly, this paper explores Merleau-Ponty's theories to find an ontological Marxist theoretical position which might be a possible answer to my question.

Schizandra chinensis Baillon is a traditional folk medicine plant that is used to treat and prevent several inflammatory diseases and cancer in Korea, but the underlying mechanisms involved in its anti-allergic activity are not fully understood. This study was designed to investigate mechanisms of anti-allergic activity of a Schizandra chinensis Baillon water extract (SCWE) in immunoglobulin E (IgE)-antigen complex-stimulated RBL2H3 cells and to assess whether gastric and intestinal digestion affects the anti-allergic properties of SCWE. Oxidative stress is an important consequence of the allergic inflammatory response. The antioxidant activities of SCWE increased in a concentration-dependent manner. RBL-2H3 cells were sensitized with monoclonal anti-dinitrophenol (DNP) specific IgE, treated with SCWE, and challenged with the antigen DNP-human serum albumin. SCWE inhibited β-hexosaminidase release and expression of interleukin (IL)-4, IL-13, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) mRNA and protein in IgE-antigen complex-stimulated RBL2H3 cells. We found that digested SCWE fully maintained its antioxidant activity and anti-allergic activity against the IgE-antigen complex-induced activation of RBL-2H3 cells. SCWE may be useful for preventing allergic diseases, such as asthma. Thus, SCWE could be used as a natural functional ingredient for allergic diseases in the food and/or pharmaceutical industries.
Electrochemical Production of Hydrogen Coupled with the Oxidation of Arsenite

<P>The production of hydrogen accompanied by the simultaneous oxidation of arsenite (As(III)) was achieved using an electrochemical system that employed a BiO<SUB><I>x</I></SUB>–TiO<SUB>2</SUB> semiconductor anode and a stainless steel (SS) cathode in the presence of sodium chloride (NaCl) electrolyte. The production of H<SUB>2</SUB> was enhanced by the addition of As(III) during the course of water electrolysis. The synergistic effect of As(III) on H<SUB>2</SUB> production can be explained in terms of (1) the scavenging of reactive chlorine species (RCS), which inhibit the production of H<SUB>2</SUB> by competing with water molecules (or protons) for the electrons on the cathode, by As(III) and (2) the generation of protons, which are more favorably reduced on the cathode than water molecules, through the oxidation of As(III). The addition of 1.0 mM As(III) to the electrolyte at a constant cell voltage (<I>E</I><SUB>cell</SUB>) of 3.0 V enhanced the production of H<SUB>2</SUB> by 12% even though the cell current (<I>I</I><SUB>cell</SUB>) was reduced by 5%. The net effect results in an increase in the energy efficiency (EE) for H<SUB>2</SUB> production (ΔEE) by 17.5%. Furthermore, the value ΔEE, which depended on As(III) concentration, also depended on the applied <I>E</I><SUB>cell</SUB>. For example, the ΔEE increased with increasing As(III) concentration in the micromolar range but decreased as a function of <I>E</I><SUB>cell</SUB>. This is attributed to the fact that the reactions between RCS and As(III) are influenced by both RCS concentration depending on <I>E</I><SUB>cell</SUB> and As(III) concentration in the solution. On the other hand, the ΔEE decreased with increasing As(III) concentration in the millimolar range due to the adsorption of As(V) generated from the oxidation of As(III) on the semiconductor anode. In comparison to the electrochemical oxidation of certain organic compounds (e.g., phenol, 4-chlorophenol, 2-chlorophenol, salicylic acid, catechol, maleic acid, oxalate, and urea), the ΔEE obtained during As(III) oxidation (17.5%) was higher than that observed during the oxidation of the above organic compounds (ΔEE = 3.0–15.3%) with the exception of phenol at 22.1%. We prove that the set of k-type nonwandering points of a Z2-action T can be decomposed into a disjoint union of closed and T-invariant sets $B_1,{\ldots},B_l$ such that $T|B_i$ is topologically k-type transitive for each $i=1,2,{\ldots},l$, if T is expansive and has the shadowing property.
