The Process Safety Management (PSM) by the Law of Industry, Safety and Health has been performed for preventing major accidents of chemical plants since 1996. In terms of preventing chemical accidents more precisely, it is essential to develop a tool for quantitative risk assessment. For this, KOSHA (Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency) developed an Integrated Risk Management System (IRMS) . The system is designed to assimilate data on chemical plant hazards from external database, to integrate these data with location information (topographic and demographic), and to make them user-friendly accessible. The system consists of several main functions: display of five major Korean petrochemical complex layout, display of equipment layout with its information utilizing the external database, zonation of the hazard effected area with consequence analyses, the most probable accident scenario generation, accident/incident database and calculation of frequency of accident using equipment reliability database, etc. The highlight of IRMS is to provide the risk contours using GIS(Geographical Information System) technology. IRMS is intended to manage hazardous installation more systematically and effectively, to reduce the number of accident remarkably, further minimizing production loss in the plant. The system is now under application to about 500 PSM sites as well as and emergency authorities in Korea by KOSHA (Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency)

The antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant activities of dietary supplementation of sea tangle from Goseong and the alginate-free residue of sea tangle were investigated in Sprague Dawley rats treated with a high-fat diet, streptozotocin, poloxamer 407, and bromobenzene. The alginate-free residue of Goseong sea tangle induced a significant reduction in triglycerides and total cholesterol levels, as well as a significant increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Alginate-free Goseong sea tangle residue reduced the activities of the phase I enzymes aminopyrine N-demethylase and aniline hydroxylase, which had been increased by intraperitoneal injection of bromobenzene. Pretreatment with Goseong sea tangle residue prevented a bromobenzene-induced decrease in epoxide hydrolase activity. Bromobenzene reduced hepatic glutathione content and increased hepatic lipid peroxide levels. Pretreatment with alginate-free Goseong sea tangle residue prevented lipid peroxidation induced by bromobenzene, but pretreatment with Goseong sea tangle did not. These results suggest that Goseong sea tangle residue exerted antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant activities that were higher than those induced by alginate-containing sea tangle. Therefore, the alginate-free residue may contain physiologically unknown active components, other than alginic acid, which may potentially be used to prevent hyperlipidemic atherosclerosis.

Caroli’s disease is a rare autosomal-recessive disorder caused by malformation of the ductal plate during embryonic development. Although it is present at birth, Caroli’s disease is typically not diagnosed until between the second and fourth decades of life, as it was in the present patient. Here we report a rare case of Caroli’s disease limited to one liver segment, which was initially misdiagnosed as an intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct. The asymptomatic patient was treated with liver segmentectomy. (Clin Mol Hepatol 2015;21:175-179)

Selenoprotein M (SeIM) is a eukaryotic selenoprotein containing one selenocysteine (Sec) and Sec insertion sequence (SECIS) in 3' untranslated regions. In order to examine whether SelM expression and selenium treatment were influenced on expression level of the apoptosis-related proteins, pCMV/hlDE fusion gene were overexpressed in the HEK 293 cell line and hSelM-Tg rat. Herein, it is concluded that; ⅰ) two transgenic mice were identified by PCR analysis using specific primers by screening 28 newborn founder mice, ⅱ) the GFP-hSeIM fusion protein were successfully detected on the protein level in the HEK 293 cell line and hSeIM-Tg rat. ⅲ) it was also observed that p53 proteins were significantly changed in the HEK 293 cell under the condition of hSeIM overexpression and selenuim treatment, while not changed in the kidney tissue of hSeIM-Tg rat. ⅳ) Bax proteins were significantly changed in the kidney of hSeIM-Tg rat under the condition of hSeIM overexpression and sel treatment, while not changed in the HEK 293 cell line. ⅴ) Bel2 proteins in the HEK 293 cell were significantly decreased in the hSeIM transfectants, but hSeIM-Tg rat were shown the different expression patterns in the sel treated condition. These results suggest that selenium treatment and SeIM overexpression were differently influenced the expressions of apoptosis-related proteins in the tumor cell line and transgenic tissue

Background: In order to assess the high value-added use of the alginate-free residue of sea tangle, an animal study was performed to evaluate the functional activities and key compounds present. In the animal study, sea tangle and the alginate-free residue demonstrated good anti-hyperlipidemic and anti-arteriosclerotic abilities. Results: The functional compounds in the alginate-free residue of the sea tangle were effectively extracted by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE). The optimum extraction temperature and pressure were 40 ℃ and 6500 psi (M1) in the SFE, a better method in comparison to the conditions of 70 ℃ and 4500 psi (M2), respectively. The anti-atherosclerotic effects of the alginate-free residue of sea tangle (M1, M2) were investigated in Sprague-Dawley rats treated with poloxamer 407, Triton WR 1339, corn oil, and a high-fat diet. The M1 fraction reduced the serum lipid levels with greater efficacy than the M2 fraction. In the hyperlipidemic rats, treatment with M1 decreased the serum triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels when compared to the levels in normal rats. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that the alginate-free residue of sea tangle reduces serum TC, TG, and LDL-C. These results suggest that the alginate-free residue of sea tangle contains physiologically active components, such as fucosterol, that may exert beneficial effects in the prevention of atherosclerosis.

Background: The use of antiviral agent has changed the prognosis of patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related end stage liver disease. In these patients, therefore, a more efficient prognostic model for determining early mortality is necessary to properly select those who require liver transplantation. In this study, we aimed to develop a new prognostic model. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed a total of consecutive 194 patients with decompensated HBV-related liver cirrhosis (≥CTP score 7, ascites, or jaundice) who had initially started antiviral treatment in Korea university Anam hospital. Univariate and multivariate cox-regression modeling was used to develop a model for predicting 6-month mortality Results: The study population was predominantly male (128/194) and median age was 51 years. Antiviral agents were administered for a median of 41 months (lamivudine in 157 patients, entecavir in 37). At baseline 147 and 12 patients had ascites and encephalopathy, respectively, with a mean CTP score of 9. Twenty-one (10.8%) patients died within the first 6 months of treatment. Univariate analysis revealed that baseline variables such as age, the presence of ascites or encephalopathy, serum bilirubin, prothrombin time, albumin, Na, BUN, alkaline phosphatase, and HBV DNA levels were associated with the deaths within 6-months (all P<0.05). Among them serum bilirubin, prothrombin time, HBV DNA levels and age were found to be independent risk factors in multivariate analysis. Using these four risk factors, we developed new scoring system to predict 6-months mortality. This new prediction model showed AUROC of 0.941, higher than those of CTP score and MELD score which were 0.893 and 0.862, respectively. Conclusions: This newly developed prediction model for early mortality will be useful in selecting the candidates of urgent liver transplantation in patients with decompensated HBV-related liver cirrhosis.
