A series of molecular weight controlled polyimide oligomer (Oligo-PI) resins were developed via thepolymerization of 4,4’-(1,3-phenylenedioxy)dianiline (TPE-R), 2,3’,3,4’-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) and4-phenylethynyl phthalic anhydride (PEPA). PEPA was served as the molecular weight controlling and reactive end-cappingagent. Oligo-PI resins have an asymmetric and amorphous structure, which could make better processability to fabricatecomposites. To investigate the effect of molecular weight (MW) and chain extension structures of phenylethynyl groups bythermal curing on thermal and mechanical properties, carbon fabric reinforced Oligo-PIs (Oligo-PI/CFs) were prepared viahot press technique. Morphology, mechanical and thermal properties of Oligo-PI/CFs were measured by SEM, TGA, IZODimpact tester, and UTM (three-point bending test). As MW got higher and the ordered network structures were formed, thecomposite exhibited excellent thermal stability. Flexural strengths also increased by building the crosslinked structures. Onthe other hand, impact strengths were less influenced. Among Oligo-PI/CFs, Oligo-PI/CF-3 showed comparatively goodperformance. The mechanical properties of Oligo-PI/CF-3 (5 ply) was evaluated at both 25 °C and 200 °C. The compositemaintained high strengths even at high temperatures, demonstrating the durability of Oligo-PI/CFs in harsh conditionsutilized for the aerospace and military applications.

Oxidative stress in neurons causes DNA breakdown, cell membrane damage, and neuronal cell death, and can cause neurodegenerative changes. Recently, research interest in discovering herbal medicine materials that can protect cells from oxidative stress is increasing. Humulus japonicus, Diospyros lotus, Zingiber officinale and Red Ginseng are oriental medicine materials that have been used in traditional medicine in Korea and China. In the present study we evaluated the ameliorative effects of H. japonicus, D. lotus, Z. officinale and Red Ginseng extracts mixture (HDZR) against 6-OHDA-induced oxidative stress in microglia. As a result, HDZR restored cells damaged by 6-OHDA in microglia. HDZR pretreatment protected the microglia against oxidative stress by reducing cell death, apoptosis and reactive oxygen species generation. HDZR pretreatment also increased superoxide dismutase and catalase enzyme activity. Moreover, HDZR activated the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. Taken together, these results showed that HDZR treatment has potential as a therapeutic agent against neuron injury through the suppression of oxidative stress.
Estrogen-induced acute pancreatitis: A case report and literature review

Estrogens are commonly used in gynecologic area, such as oral contraception, hormone replacement therapy, and in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer. Although estrogen is a common cause of acute drug-induced pancreatitis, there has been paucity of report in Korea. Clinical course of estrogen-induced acute pancreatitis is usually mild to moderate, but fetal case can occur. In addition, there can be a latency from the first administration to the symptom. Therefore, physicians should consider the possibility of the disease when a woman taking estrogen or previous history of taking estrogen presents with acute abdominal pain. Here, we report a case of estrogen-induced acute pancreatitis that occurred during the preparation for embryo transfer.
Analysis of extended haplotype in Korean cattle (Hanwoo) population

Korean cattle (Hanwoo) are categorized into three breeds based on color: brown, brindle, and black. Among these breeds, brown Hanwoo has been subjected to intensive selection to improve meat traits. To identify genetic traces driven by recent selection in brown Hanwoo, we scanned the genomes of brown and brindle Hanwoo using a bovine SNP chip. We identified 17 candidate selection signatures in brown Hanwoo and sequenced four candidate regions from 10 individuals each of brown and brindle Hanwoo. In particular, non-synonymous SNPs in the ADSL gene (K88M, L189H, and R302Q) might have had mutational effects on protein structure as a result of altering the purine pathway during nucleotide breakdown. The ADSL gene was previously reported to affect meat quality and yield in livestock. Meat quality and yield are main breeding goals for brown Hanwoo, and our results support a potential causal influence of non-synonymous SNPs in the ADSL gene. [BMB Reports 2016; 49(9): 514-519]

The transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channel, a nonselective Ca(2+) and Na(+) channel, is a molecular transducer of nociceptive stimuli. N-Arachidonoyl dopamine (NADA) and N-oleoyldopamine (OLDA), two unsaturated N-acyldopamines, are major activating endogenous TRPV1 ligands and their presence in mammalian brain tissue has been reported. However, the biological significance of NADA and OLDA remains unknown. To investigate their biological function in the nervous system, a sensitive and accurate quantitative method for determining endogenous NADA and OLDA in the brain is necessary. Thus, a column-switching liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) method was developed to quantify NADA and OLDA in mouse striatum. Mouse cerebellum tissue in which neither NADA nor OLDA were detected was used as a surrogate matrix to prepare calibrators. NADA and OLDA were extracted from mouse brain tissue by solid-phase extraction and then filtered and analyzed by LC-MS-MS with electrospray ionization in the positive ion mode. The selectivity results and comparison of calibration curves prepared with mouse cerebellum and striatum established that the former was acceptable as the surrogate matrix of the latter for analyzing NADA and OLDA. The validation results of the matrix effect, linearity, precision, accuracy, and stability were satisfactory. The limits of detection and limits of quantification were 0.125 pg mg(-1) for both analytes. This method was sensitive and accurate enough to determine endogenous concentrations of these compounds in mouse striatum and will be very useful for further study of the biological functions of NADA and OLDA and other related factors in vivo.

A series of dendritic multiporphyrin arrays (P(Zn)Tz-nP(FB); n = 2, 4, 8) comprising a triazole-bearing focal zinc porphyrin (P-Zn) with a different number of freebase porphyrin (P-FB) wings has been synthesized, and their photoinduced energy transfer process has been evaluated. UV/vis absorption, emission, and time-resolved fluorescence measurements indicated that efficient excitation energy transfer takes place from the focal P-Zn to P-FB wings in P(Zn)Tz-nP(FB)'s. The triazole-bearing P-Zn effectively formed host-guest complexes with anionic species by means of axial coordination with the aid of multiple C-H hydrogen bonds. By addition of various anionic guests to P(Zn)Tz and P(Zn)Tz-nP(FB)'s, strong bathochromic shifts of P-Zn absorption were observed, indicating the HOMO-LUMO gap (Delta EHOMO-LUMO) of P-Zn decreased by anion binding. Time-resolved fluorescence predominantly takes place from P-Zn in P(Zn)Tz-nP(FB)'s after the addition of CN-. This change was reversible because a treatment with a silver strip to remove CN- fully recovered the original energy transfer process from the focal P-Zn to P-FB wings. measurements revealed that the fluorescence emission
