Water megamasers from circumnuclear disks in galaxy centers provide the most accurate measurements of supermassive black hole masses and uniquely probe the subparsec accretion processes. At the same time, these systems offer independent crucial constraints of the Hubble constant in the nearby universe, and thus, the arguably best single constraint on the nature of dark energy. The chances of finding these golden standards are, however, abysmally low, at less than or similar to 3% overall for any level of water maser emission detected at 22 GHz and less than or similar to 1% for those exhibiting disk-like configuration. We provide here a thorough summary of the current state of detection of water megamaser disks along with a novel investigation of the likelihood of increasing their detection rates based on a multivariate parameter analysis of the optical and mid-infrared (mid-IR) photometric properties of the largest database of galaxies surveyed for 22 GHz emission. We find that galaxies with water megamaser emission tend to be associated with strong emission in all Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer mid-IR wavelengths, with the strongest enhancement in the W4 band, at 22 mu m, as well as with previously proposed and newly found indicators of active galactic nucleus strength in the mid-IR, such as red W1 - W2 and W1 - W4 colors, and the integrated mid-IR luminosity of the host galaxy. These trends offer a potential boost of the megamaser detection rates to 6%-15%, or a factor of 2-8 relative to the current rates, depending on the chosen sample selection criteria, while fostering real chances for discovering. 20 new megamaser disks.

Dietary Glutamine Supplementation Enhances Weaned Pigs Mitogen-Induced Lymphocyte Proliferation
Lee, D.N.,Weng, C.F.,Cheng, Y.H.,Kuo, T.Y.,Wu, J.F.,Yen, H.T Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2003 Animal Bioscience Vol.16 No.8
Two experiments involving 92 crossbred, 21 day old weaned pigs were used to evaluate the effect of glutamine supplement in a dietary or culture medium on lymphocyte proliferation. In Exp. 1, 88 pigs were fed diets supplemented with 0, 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5% glutamine for 28 days. Lymphocytes were prepared from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), ileal Peyer's patches (PP), the mesenteric lymph node (MLN), and the spleen in each dietary supplement group on days 7, 14, or 28 postweaning. Lymphocytes were cultured at $37^{\circ}C$ for 72 h in a RPMI-1640 medium with or without mitogen-stimulated, and pulsed with 3Hthymidine for an additional 18 h. The stimulation index of PBMC proliferation in 1.0% dietary glutamine supplement group and both of the MLN and splenocytes proliferation in 1.5% dietary glutamine supplement group was significantly (p<0.05) increased at 14 days postweaning. In Exp. 2, four weaned pigs were fed a basal diet for 14 days. The 3H-thymidine incorporation of PBMC, PP, and MLN cells, incubated with 0.125 to 0.25 mM glutamine in culture medium were markedly enhanced with Con A-stimulated, however, the splenocyte proliferation was not affected in the addition of glutamine medium. These observations suggest that dietary glutamine supplement might enhance the lymphocyte proliferation of weaned pigs.

We have studied the electronic structure and interfacial properties of mechanically exfoliated few-layer NiPS3 van der Waals crystals on ZnO/Nb:SrTiO3 substrates using scanning photoelectron microscopy and spectroscopy. The conducting ZnO layer enhances the visibility of few-layer NiPS3 on Nb:SrTiO3 and prevents charging effects in photoemission. We experimentally determined a type-II band alignment at the NiPS3/ZnO interface. The valence band offset (VBO) of few-layer NiPS3/ZnO is 2.8 +/- 0.09 eV, and the conduction band offset is 1.0 +/- 0.09 eV. Moreover, we found an increase of similar to 0.3 eV in VBO as decreasing NiPS3 thickness, suggesting electronic coupling or charge transfer at the NiPS3/ZnO interface. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.
We have investigated the electronic structure of Sr2IrO4 using core-to-core resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. The experimental spectra can be well reproduced using ab initio density functional theory based multiplet ligand field theory calculations, thereby validating these calculations. We found that the low-energy, effective Ir t(2g) orbitals are practically degenerate in their crystal-field energy. We uncovered that Sr2IrO4 and iridates in general are negative charge transfer systems with large covalency and a substantial oxygen ligand hole character in the Ir t(2g) Wannier orbitals. This has far reaching consequences, as not only the on-site crystal-field energies are determined by the long-range crystal structure, but, more significantly, magnetic exchange interactions will have long-range distance dependent anisotropies in the spin direction. These findings set constraints and show pathways for the design of d(5) materials that can host compasslike magnetic interactions.

Although cellular behaviors are dynamic, the networks that govern these behaviors have been mapped primarily as static snapshots. Using an approach called differential epistasis mapping, we have discovered widespread changes in genetic interaction among yeast kinases, phosphatases, and transcription factors as the cell responds to DNA damage. Differential interactions uncover many gene functions that go undetected in static conditions. They are very effective at identifying DNA repair pathways, highlighting new damage-dependent roles for the Slt2 kinase, Pph3 phosphatase, and histone variant Htz1. The data also reveal that protein complexes are generally stable in response to perturbation, but the functional relations between these complexes are substantially reorganized. Differential networks chart a new type of genetic landscape that is invaluable for mapping cellular responses to stimuli.

Computer-aided diagnosis using morphological features for classifying breast lesions on ultrasound
Huang, Y.-L.,Chen, D.-R.,Jiang, Y.-R.,Kuo, S.-J.,Wu, H.-K.,Moon, W. K. John Wiley Sons, Ltd. 2008 Ultrasound in obstetrics & gynecology Vol.32 No.4
Objectives
To develop and evaluate a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system with automatic contouring and morphological analysis to aid in the classification of breast tumors using ultrasound.
Methods
We evaluated 118 breast lesions (34 malignant and 84 benign tumors). Each tumor contour was automatically extracted from the digitized ultrasound image. Nineteen practical morphological features from the extracted contour were calculated and principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to find independent features. A support vector machine (SVM) classifier utilized the selected principal vectors to identify the breast tumor as benign or malignant. In this study, all the cases were sampled with k-fold cross-validation (k = 10) to evaluate the performance by receiver–operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis.
Results
The areas under the ROC curves for the proposed CAD systems using all morphological features and the lower-dimensional principal vector were 0.91 and 0.90, respectively. The classification ability for breast tumors using morphological information was good.
Conclusions
This system differentiates benign from malignant breast tumors well and therefore provides a clinically useful second opinion. Moreover, the morphological features are nearly setting-independent and thus available to various ultrasound machines. Copyright © 2008 ISUOG. Published by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In recent years, more and more point-to-point communication systems involve simultaneous transmission of multiple sources of human perceptual data over a single communication medium. For example, in a teleoperation system or a telerobotic system, streams of video, audio, and haptic data need to be sent from a field place to a remote human operator. Each type of data demands a certain range of transmission rate. This creates conflicts among these data when the available bandwidth is limited. In this paper we study the bandwidth allocation for multiple sources of human perceptual data transmitted over a rate-limited communication channel. We aim to maximize the overall user satisfaction in the data transmission, and formulate an optimization problem for the bandwidth allocation. Using either the logarithmic or exponential form of human perceptual satisfaction function, we are able to derive closed-form solutions for the optimization problem. We show that the optimal bandwidth allocation for each type of data is piecewise linear with respect to the total available bandwidth.
