Why pest management needs behavioral ecology and vice versa
Bernard D. ROITBERG 한국곤충학회 2007 Entomological Research Vol.37 No.1
Behavior manipulation is becoming an accepted tactic in pest management, however, there are many ways in which the approach can be improved. In this review, I explain how and why insect behavioral response to various stimuli can vary dramatically under different conditions and that it is this variable response that must be understood before behavior manipulation becomes widely accepted in pest management programs. I propose that entomologists use concepts from behavioral ecology to manipulate pest behavior in a predictable manner. The key is to study behaviors that maximize fitness in natural environments and then exploit these behaviors in agriculture. I provide examples from a range of behavior manipulation tactics, including use of attracticides, kairomone-mediated biological control, use of marking pheromones, and push-pull manipulation.

This paper reports the results of an investigation of thermal cycles and microstructural development in 5182-H111 aluminiumalloy during low speed (0.2 m/min) and high speed (1.5 m/min) friction stir welding (FSW), using quenched pin-break specimens. The results show that welds made at both speeds have excellent mechanical properties, although these derive fromdifferent thermomechanical mechanisms. For the low speed weld thermal conductivity plays the most significant role in thedevelopment of microstructure, while in the case of high speed welding it is the high strain rate plastic deformation that isthe dominant mechanism. The yield strength in the stir zone of both the 0.2 m/min and 1.5 m/min welds could be explainedthrough the Hall–Petch relationship, leading to an observable increase in the case of the 1.5 m/min weld. By contrast, anincrease in yield strength beneath the shoulder of the 1.5 m/min weld was driven by strain hardening.

The CEA is deeply involved in a research program (Material Test Reactor and Zero Power Reactor) concerning the nuclear fuel advanced studies (actinides, plutonium), the waste management, the scientific and technical support of French PWR reactors and EPR reactor, and innovative systems. In this framework, specific neutron integral experiments have been carried out in the critical ZPR facilities of the CEA Cadarache such as MINERVE, EOLE and MASURCA. This paper deals with MINERVE Pool Reactor experiments. MINERVE is mainly devoted to neutronics studies of different reactor core types. The aim is to improve the knowledge of the integral absorption cross sections of actinides (OSMOSE program). The results show a very good accuracy of JEFF-3.1.1 files except for 241Am(n,γ) which seems to be underestimated by about (-6± 2)% in the thermal and epithermal neutron energy range.

<P>The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment will search for dark matter particle interactions with a detector containing a total of 10 tonnes of liquid xenon within a double -vessel cryostat. The large mass and proximity of the cryostat to the active detector volume demand the use of material with extremely low intrinsic radioactivity. We report on the radioassay campaign conducted to identify suitable metals, the determination of factors limiting radiopure production, and the selection of titanium for construction of the LZ cryostat and other detector components. This titanium has been measured with activities of U-238(e) < 1.6 mBq/kg, U-238(I) < 0.09 mBq/kg, Th-232(e) = 0.28 +/- 0.03 mBq/kg, Th-232(I) = 0.25 +/- 0.02 mBq/kg, K-40 <0.54 mBq/kg, and (60) Co <0.02 mBq/kg (68% CL). Such low intrinsic activities, which are some of the lowest ever reported for titanium, enable its use for future dark matter and other rare event searches. Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to assess the expected background contribution from the LZ cryostat with this radioactivity. In 1,000 days of WIMP search exposure of a 5.6-tonne fiducial mass, the cryostat will contribute only a mean background of 0.160 +/- 0.001(stat) +/- 0.030(sys) counts. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. <P>We compute the form factors for the B --> Kl(+)l(-) semileptonic decay process in lattice QCD using gauge-field ensembles with 2 + 1 flavors of sea quark, generated by the MILC Collaboration. The ensembles span lattice spacings from 0.12 to 0.045 fm and have multiple sea-quark masses to help control the chiral extrapolation. The asqtad improved staggered action is used for the light valence and sea quarks, and the clover action with the Fermilab interpretation is used for the heavy b quark. We present results for the form factors f(+)(q(2)), f(0)(q2), and f(T)(q2), where q(2) is the momentum transfer, together with a comprehensive examination of systematic errors. Lattice QCD determines the form factors for a limited range of q(2), and we use the model-independent z expansion to cover the whole kinematically allowed range. We present our final form-factor results as coefficients of the z expansion and the correlations between them, where the errors on the coefficients include statistical and all systematic uncertainties. We use this complete description of the form factors to test QCD predictions of the form factors at high and low q(2).</P>
