      • Pedagogical Challenges of Training Women in Information Technology

Penny Collings Asian pacific women's information network center 2002 APWIN Vol.4 No.-

Fifteen participants in the Asia-Pacific Women ICT Trainers' Exchange at Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, November, 2001, completed a survey about their learning style preferences. Overall, the survey results suggest that women's learning style preferences vary with the situation and over time but that verbal participation and a cooperative learning environment are widely enjoyed. This paper briefly explores women's ways of learning, and representations of what IT is. The paper also presents the survey and then suggests some design ideas for online spaces that could support women's learning style preferences.

Alcohol use disorder in the intensive care unit; a highly morbid condition; chemical dependency discussions during admission improves outcomes

        Colling Kristin P.,Alexandra K. Kraft,Harry Melissa L. 대한중환자의학회 2023 Acute and Critical Care Vol.38 No.1

Background Alcohol use disorders (AUD) are common in patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU) and increase the risk for worse outcomes. In this study, we describe factors associated with patient mortality after ICU admission and the effect of chemical dependency (CD) counseling on outcomes in the year following ICU admission. Methods We retrospectively reviewed patient demographics, hospital data, and documentation of CD counseling by medical providers for all ICU patients with AUD admitted to our institution between January 2017 and March 2019. Primary outcomes were in-hospital and 1-year mortality. Results Of the 527 patients with AUD requiring ICU care, median age was 56 years (range, 18–86). Both in-hospital (12%) and 1-year mortality rates (27%) were high. Rural patients, comorbidities, older age, need for mechanical ventilation, and complications were associated with increased risk of in-hospital and 1-year mortality. CD counseling was documented for 73% of patients, and 50% of these patients accepted alcohol treatment or resources prior to discharge. CD evaluation and acceptance was associated with a significantly decreased rate of readmission for liver or alcohol-related issues (36% vs. 58%; odds ratio [OR], 0.41; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.27–0.61) and 1-year mortality (7% vs. 19.5%; OR, 0.32; 95% CI, 0.16–0.64). CD evaluation alone, regardless of patient acceptance, was associated with a significantly decreased 1-year post-discharge mortality rate (12% vs. 23%; OR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.25–0.77). Conclusions ICU patients with AUD had high in-hospital and 1-year mortality. CD evaluation, regardless of patient acceptance, was associated with a significant decrease in 1-year mortality.

Outcomes after rib fractures: more complex than a single number

        Colling Kristin P.,Goettl Tyler,Harry Melissa L. 대한외상학회 2022 大韓外傷學會誌 Vol.35 No.4

Purpose: Rib fractures are common injuries that can lead to morbidity and mortality. Methods: Data on all patients with rib fractures admitted to a single trauma center between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2018 were reviewed. Results: A total of 1,671 admissions for rib fracture were examined. Patients’ median age was 57 years, the median Injury Severity Score (ISS) was 14, and the median number of fractured ribs was three. The in-hospital mortality rate was 4%. Age, the number of rib fractures, and Charlson Comorbidity Index scores were poor predictors of mortality, while the ISS was a slightly better predictor, with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values of 0.60, 0.55, 0.58, and 0.74, respectively. Multivariate regression showed that age, ISS, and Charlson Comorbidity Index score, but not the number of rib fractures, were associated with significantly elevated adjusted odds ratios for mortality (1.03, 1.14, and 1.28, respectively). Conclusions: Age, ISS, and comorbidities were independently associated with the risk of mortality; however, they were not accurate predictors of death. The factors associated with rib fracture mortality are complex and cannot be explained by a single variable. Interventions to improve outcomes must be multifaceted.

Antioxidant Properties of Taraxacum officinale Leaf Extract Are Involved in the Protective Effect Against Hepatoxicity Induced by Acetaminophen in Mice

Dirleise Colle,Leticia Priscilla Arantes,Priscila Gubert,Soˆnia Cristina Almeida da Luz,Margareth Linde Athayde,Joa˜o Batista Teixeira ocha,Fe´lix Alexandre Antunes Soares 한국식품영양과학회 2012 Journal of medicinal food Vol.15 No.6

Acetaminophen (APAP) hepatotoxicity has been related to several cases of hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatic transplant. As APAP hepatotoxicity is related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and excessive oxidative stress, natural antioxidant compounds have been tested as an alternative therapy to diminish the hepatic dysfunction induced by APAP. Taraxacum officinale Weber (Family Asteraceae), commonly known as dandelion, is used for medicinal purposes because of its choleretic, diuretic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties. This study evaluated the hepatoprotective activity of T. officinale leaf extract against APAP-induced hepatotoxicity. T. officinale was able to decrease thiobarbituric acid–reactive substance levels induced by 200 mg/kg APAP (p.o.), as well as prevent the decrease in sulfhydryl levels caused by APAP treatment. Furthermore, histopathological alterations, as well as the increased levels of serum aspartate and alanine aminotransferases caused by APAP, were prevented by T. officinale (0.1 and 0.5 mg/mL). In addition, T. officinale extract also demonstrated antioxidant activity in vitro, as well as scavenger activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and nitric oxide radicals. Our results clearly demonstrate the hepatoprotective effect of T. officinale against the toxicity induced by APAP. The possible mechanisms involved include its scavenger activities against ROS and reactive nitrogen species, which are attributed to the content of phenolic compounds in the extract.

Children`s understanding of intentional vs. non-intentional action

        Livia Colle,Divide Mate,Marco Del Giudice,Chris Ashwin,Simon Baron Cohen 서울대학교 인지과학연구소 2007 Journal of Cognitive Science Vol.8 No.1

This study investigates the development of children`s understanding of others` intentions. We report 3 experiments in which three- and five-year-olds (total sample: N = 120) were tested using 15 videotaped pairs of action sequences excluding social information from the face. In each pair of videos the same action was performed with and without an intention (e.g. John pours water, vs. John spills water). Results showed that five-year-olds were more accurate in distinguishing intentional from non-intentional actions, while three year-olds were significantly worse at understanding non-intentional actions. Three year olds tended to judge non-intentional actions as being intentional, suggesting, as Piaget proposed, they over-ascribe intentionality. This effect was found both in a verbal and non-verbal version of the task. Therefore the development of mental state explanations of actions may involve a gradual increase across preschool ages.

Vorticity Analysis Associated with Drafting Cylinders for Pneumatic Spinning

Bergada J.M.,Valencia E.,Coll Ll The Korean Fiber Society 2006 Fibers and polymers Vol.7 No.2

Traditional spinning systems have reached profitability limits in developed countries due to high production costs and low system productivity. Pneumatic spinning is seen as a developing system, because productivity is much higher than conventional systems. This study evaluates one of the main problems to increase productivity in pneumatic spinning, where air mass-flow is dragged by the drafting cylinders. This flow interacts with the incoming fibres deviating them from their expected path. Via laser anemometry, airflow velocity distribution around drafting cylinders has been measured and it has been found that vorticity is created at the cylinder's inlet. Extensive CFD simulation on the air flow dragged by the cylinders has given a clear insight into the vortex created, producing valuable information on how cylinder design affects the vorticity created. Several drafting cylinder designs have been tested without giving any improvement in productivity. However, the use of a drafting cylinder with holes in it produced good results to the problem of air currents, strongly reducing them and therefore allowing a sharp increase in yarn quality, as well as an increase in productivity. An extensive study on vortex kinematics has been undertaken, bringing with it a better understanding of vortex creation, development and breakdown.

Assessment Battery for Communication-ABaCo: A new Instrument for the Evaluation of Pragmatic Abilities

        Sacco K.,Angeleri R.,Bosco F. M.,Colle L.,Mate D.,Bara B. G. 서울대학교 인지과학연구소 2008 Journal of Cognitive Science Vol.9 No.2

The Assessment Battery for Communication (ABaCo) is a new clinical instrument for the evaluation of communicative abilities in patients with neuropsychological and psychiatric disorders, such as aphasia, right hemispheric damage, closed head injury, autism and schizophrenia. ABaCo consists of 5 scales, investigating comprehension and production of linguistic and extralinguistic acts, paralinguistic expressions, appropriateness with respect to discourse and social norms, and management of conversation. Validity measures (content and construct validity) and reliability measures (inter-rater reliability and internal consistency) were computed. The experts` content validity evaluations indicate an excellent match between test items and the measurement of pragmatic abilities, as well as the suitability of the battery for both children and adults. Regarding the other psychometric measures, computed on 390 normal children in different age groups, factor analysis shows the validity of the underlying theoretical construct. Reliability analyses show a high inter-rater agreement, suggesting that the battery can be administered and scored by any trained judge, and a good internal consistency, suggesting that the various items that make up each scale are coherent and contribute to the measurement of communicative abilities.

Study of the Dependency of the Specific Power Absorption Rate on Several Characteristics of the Excitation Magnetic Signal when Irradiating a SPION-containing Ferrofluid

        Alejandra Mina Rosales,Elena Aznar,Carmen Coll,Ruben A. Garcia Mendoza,A. Lorena Urbano Bojorge,Nazario Felix Gonzalez,Ramon Martinez-Manez,Francisco del Pozo Guerrero,Jose Javier Serrano Olmedo 한국자기학회 2016 Journal of Magnetics Vol.21 No.3

Magnetic hyperthermia mediated by superparamagnetic particles is mainly based in sinusoidal waveforms as excitation signals. Temperature changes are conventionally explained by rotation of the particles in the surrounding medium. This is a hypothesis quite questionable since habitual experimental setups only produce changes in the magnetic module, not in the field lines trajectories. Theoretical results were tested by changing the waveform of the exciting signal in order to compare non-sinusoidal signals against sinusoidal signals. Experiments were done at different frequencies: 200 ㎑, 400 ㎑, 600 ㎑, 800 ㎑ and 1 ㎒. Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide samples (SPION), made of magnetite (Fe3O4) and suspended in water (100 ㎎/ml), were used. Magnetic field strength varies from 0.1 ± 0.015 KA/m to 0.6 ± 0.015 KA/m. In this study was observed that the power loss depends on the applied frequency: for 1 to 2.5 RMS current the responses for each signal are part of the higher section of the exponential function, and for 3.5 to 8 RMS current the response is clearly the decrement exponential function’s tale (under 1 × 10³ LER/gr).
