Endemic species of oceanic islands are vulnerable due to their geographical isolation and small population sizes. For endangered island species, captive breeding program is an important strategy for conservation and sustainable management. Pachyrhynchus sarcitis is a flightless weevil decorated with colourful markings and distributed exclusively on several islets of Southeast Asia including Lanyu, Ludao, and Babuyan Islands. The life history of threatened Pachyrhynchus species of these islands was poorly known. This study reared P. sarcitis from Lanyu and Babuyan Islands for the first time in the laboratory using their host plant (Leea guineensis). The two island populations showed significant differences in instar numbers, in which the weevils from Lanyu Island had a higher instar number regardless the length of developmental duration. The adult body size of both sexes of the Babuyan population became smaller under laboratory condition; whereas Lanyu population in the laboratory did not show this trend. The differences in larval development might suggest local adaptation to the host plants or other life history associated characteristics which requires further research.

Nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates are fabricated using an nodization method. The mean diameters of nanoporousanodic aluminum oxide templates are 100 nm and 200 nm by various processing parameters of the anodization method. A moldedplastic thin film nanostructure is fabricated by nanoimprinting using the AAO template as a mold insert. The surface properties ofthe molded plastic thin film are discussed using various nanoimprinting process parameters. Contact angles of the molded plastic thinfilm with the nanostructure exceed those without the nanostructure. The molded plastic thin films with a nanostructure and ahydrophobic surface are formed, and their contact angles exceed 90o. This study observes the behavior of osteoblast-like cells (MG63)cultured on nanostructure thin films, i.e., AAO, polylactic acid (PLA) and polycarbonate (PC). Cell growth behavior indicates thatthe AAO template with a 200 nm nanostructure is best. This study shows that cell adhesion and spreading are influenced by surfacetopography in the nanometer feature.

Objective Problematic use of social media (PUSM) may affect sleep quality and self-stigma in people with schizophrenia and consequently reduce their quality of life (QoL). This longitudinal study investigated if sleep quality and self-stigma mediated relationships between PUSM and QoL.Methods One-hundred-and-ninety-three outpatients with schizophrenia were recruited from a psychiatric center in Taiwan from April 2019 to August 2021 and participated in a longitudinal study at intervals of three months between measurements. QoL was assessed using the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire Brief Version; sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index; self-stigma using the Self-Stigma Scale-Short; and PUSM using the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale. Via SPSS 20.0, general estimating equation models assessed temporal associations between variables. Via R software, mediating effects of self-stigma and sleep quality were examined through Monte Carlo simulations with 20,000 repetitions. Results Mean scores of physical, psychological, social and environmental QoL ranged from 11.86 to 13.02. Mean scores of sleep quality and self-stigma were 9.1±4.5 and 2.2±0.8, respectively. Sleep quality and self-stigma were directly related to QoL (p<0.001) and mediated indirect relationships between PUSM and all components of QoL with a range of 95% confidence intervals spanning from -0.0591 to -0.0107 for physical QoL; -0.0564 to -0.0095 for psychological QoL; -0.0292 to -0.0035 for social QoL; and -0.0357 to -0.0052 for environmental QoL.Conclusion Sleep quality and self-stigma mediated relationships between PUSM and QoL in people with schizophrenia. Developing interventions targeting PUSM, sleep, and self-stigma may help improve QoL in people with schizophrenia.

The radiologic appearance of multiple discrete pulmonary nodules in immunocompetent patients, with cryptococcal infection, has been rarely described. We describe a case of pulmonary cryptococcosis, presenting with bilaterally and randomly distributed nodules on a computed tomography, mimicking hematogeneous metastases. Positron emission tomography does not demonstrate 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake, suggesting a low probability for malignancy, which is a crucial piece of information for clinicians when making a management decision. We find the absence of FDG uptake correlates with the pathologic finding of an infectious nodule, composed of fibrosis and necrosis.
