        The effects of flavor components from Korean mint(Agastache rugosa O Kuntz) on bacterial growth and metabolism were tested for the development of natural food preservatives. Bacteria tested were Staphylococcus aureus KCTC 1927, Bacillus subtilis IFO 3026, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Vibrio parahemolyticus. The flavor components used were anethol, caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, estragol, eugenol, isoeugenol, and limonene. The growth of bacteria tested were completely inhibited by the flavor components such as estragole, eugenol, and isoeugenol from Korean mint at the concentration of 0.05% especially, V. parahemolyticus was inhibited at 0.03%. Limonene was not affected on the bacterial growth since caryophyllene inhibited the growth of B. subtilis only. Isoeugenol showed the most strong effect on bacterial growth using single component, and the combined use of estragole-isoeugenol showed the most strong effect to all bacteria tested. MIC for V. parahemolyticus was found to be 200 μg/mg in anethol, eugenol, and isoeugenol respectively, and 200 μg/mg in combined use of estragole-anethol, estragol-eugenol, and estragol-isoeugenol. Scanning electron micrographs of B. subtilis and E. coli treated with estragole 0.03% showed the damage of membrane system and protoplasm leaked.

        For six years this study was undertaken to discuss the characteristics in physique index and physical fitness of physical education high school of Busan and Kyeung Buk 103, H. commercial high school 156, Y. liberal high school 154 students. The implication of this study are as follows: 1. Weight, height: physical education high school students' are better than the other high school students'. And liberal high school students' are better than commercial high school students' except the first grade students case. This result shows the importance of regular school life, well planned meals and regular physical exercise in teenager's physical development. 2. All of the liberal high school students, commercial high school students, physical education high school students know nothing about the aim, the goal of physical education, the necessity of physical active in modern life and the aim of physical fitness test. 3. Comparing the records of each high school students, contrary to the conventional idea, there was no notable difference in their middle school days but in the case of high school, the record of physical education high school students is lower than that of the other high school students, especialy at pull ups, standing long jump abilities. It is expected that such phenomenon will be appeared same in the senior year of high school, and it is postulated as the result of the mismanagement of physical fitness test related with entrance into a school higher grade.

        Mourning Becomes Electra에 나타난 죄와 죽음의 의식 연구

        The purpose in this paper is to study the aspects and the meaning insinuated with the Mannons' sin and death's consciousness inventively dealt with in the tragedy, Mourning Becomes Electra by Eugene Gladstone O'Neill. According to him it may well be that a sin-haunted life alongwith death's consciousness is human being's universal inevitable truth. In chapter II, I deal with what and how Ezra's death consciousness reflects in his attitude of life. And his being is characteristic of the Greek-temple-like Mannon residence. The grand house of the Mannons is himself and his tomb as well as his family. Ezra, in his judge's robe in his portrait seems to preside over the happenings of the family. But when he turns from the civil war to his family, his one desire is for expiation. In spite, as he said, "Life was a dying. Being born was starting to die. Death was being born," he is the incarnation of death image appearing the personification of "death in life." as well. In chapter III, this study drives the logical line to analyze Lavinia's Fate consciousness. Lavinia forswears the happiness her upcoming marriage might have brought her, and locks herself inside the shuttered house to atone during the rest of her life for the series of sins of the Mannon family, Her puritan heritage keeping aloof Lavinia, in her living death, must pay the dear price for being the last of the cursed family and is working out the curse-redemption. In chapter IV, I attempt to analyze Orin's sinnings and death consciousness. He manages to escape from death in life, from the "tomb" which Abe Mannon built to death-birth-peace, to the womb. He longs to fall in such love with Lavinia. Of course, he is given a flat refusal by her only to drive him to death. In other words, Orin's private Furies, combined with the puritanical influence of the Mannon family, lead him to adopt the personality and even the office of his own father, while Lavinia adopts that of her mother. Thus their relationship moves, on his part, closer to that incestuous consummation he was uncle to achieve with his mother. Far from reaching peace through the intervention of those around him, he can find his release through suicide. Consequently, O'Neill shows that any human life in this world which is represented by the Mannons is deprived of order, form and meaning. Their sinning and consciousness can not help redeeming themselves from the sin, and accepting their death. As for the Mannons, their attempts to escape from their psychological sin-consciousness seem impossible for them to. As the play is coming to its end with a return to the house, it is noticed as a tomb in which all the Mannons have committed their secret crimes, drawn out their lives and then must endure their punishment. O'Neill is to be recognized as a successful writer to replace the Greek fate by the natural forces of sin-consciousness we all have.

        Chungnam National University (CNU) is located in Daeduk Science Town, a center of science and technology in Korea, and it is expected to play an important role in the development of science in Korea. With this in mind, the basic natural sciences at CNU should be more actively supported in both education and research. Accordingly analysis and comparison of the basic science program at major college in Korea as well as those in the USA and Europe has been performed. The current cooperative relationship between CNU and research institutes in the science town has also been analyzed. This study has resulted in propositions to make more efficient the upbringing of the basic sciences at CNU, by focusing on the following points ; a) to improve academic affairs, b) to make graduate studies substantial, c) to secure highly qualified faculty members, d) to increase cooperation in research between CNU and reserch institutes, e) to enlarge research laboratories and acquire more equipment and facilities.

      • Nitrogen, pH 및 Cytokinins 處理가 人蔘 懸獨培養細胞의 生長과 페놀化合物의 生成에 미치는 影響

        人蔘細胞의 懸濁培養에 의한 페놀화합물 生産可能性을 檢討하기 위하여 培養細胞의 生長 및 페놀화합물의 生産에 適合한 窒素源形態와 濃度, pH 및 cytokinins의 濃度를 알아보고자 實驗을 遂行하였다. 窒素源의 濃度는 0.04 M 以下로 낮추고 ammonium態 窒素源의 比率을 높였을 때 細胞生長 및 페놀함량 모두 增加하였다. 培地의 pH는 5.5에서 細胞生長 및 페놀함량이 서서히 增加하다가 pH 6.0 以上에서 增加하여 pH 6.5에서 最大値를 나타낸 후 다시 減少하였다. cytokinins은 2-ip를 添加하였을 때 細胞生長이 다소 촉진되었고 페놀 含量이 증가되었다. This study was carried out to find out the proper culture conditions such as levels of nitrogen, pH and cytokinin for the production of phenolic compounds through the cell suspension culture of ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer). When the nitrogen contents were reduced below 0.04 M and the ratio of ammonium type were raised, both the growth of callus and the contents of phenolic compounds increased. Raising the pH of media to 6.5 improved both the growth of callus and production of phenolic compounds. On the media containing 2-ip, the growth of callus was stimulated a little and the content of phenolic compounds increased.

      • 우리나라 화학물질 관련 사고 대비 및 대응체계 분석

        Recently, several large chemical accidents took place in many countries. Therefore, many countries strengthened the regulation related to management of chemical safety. In case of our country, about 500 chemical accidents took place for the past decay. The preparation and response system for chemical accidents is a most important element for management of chemical safety. In this study, we analyze the preparation and response system for chemical accidents described in several regulations of our country, and suggest a more appropriate management system for chemical safety. Accident report documents vary among the Toxic Chemical Control Law, the Fire Services Law and the Industrial Safety and Health Law. In case of the Fire Services Law, there is not a concrete description about the source chemical of accident. The response authority for chemical accident is dualistic. Minister of Government Administration and Home Affairs is responsible for emergent rescue, on the other hand, ministers of central administrative branches are in charge of reconstruction of chemical accident. Therefore these dualistic system make confuse in response to a large chemical accident.

      • 하수처리를 위한 전기화학 반응의 적용 : 최적처리조건의 결정;Determination of Optimal Treatment Conditions

        본 연구의 목적은 전기화학방식의하수처리에 대한 적용 가능성을 검토하고, 주요 운전인자인전압, COD 부하량, pH, 전기전도도, 반응시간 등의 최적 처리조건을 결정하는데 있다. 각 웅전인자의 변화에 따른 COD의 처리효율을 비교 · 검토하여 최적조건을 도출하였으며, 대부분의 실험은 시간에 따른 COD의 변화를 측정할 수 있는 회분식 반응기를 사용하였고, COD 부하량의 영향을 평가하기 위해서는 체류시간을 변하시키면서 실험이 가능한 연속식 반응기를 사용하였다. 최적 조건은 전압 25V, COD 부하량은 약 160g COD/㎡ · day, pH는 중성범위, 전기전도도는 1000~1300㎲/㎝, 반응시간은 10분으로 나타났다. 전기응집반응이 탁월하여 불용성 COD 는 10분만에 90%이상이 제거되었으며, 대표적 응집제인 alum 100ppm을 투여한 경우보다 처리효율이 약 20 % 정도 향상되었다. 전기화학반응은 불용성 COD의 농도가 높은 하수처리 등에 적적한 것으로 판단되며 처리 시간이 빠르고, 경제성도 뛰어나 향후 하수처리기술로서 주목을 받게 될 것으로 판단된다. This research was carried out to test the feasibility of electrochemical method in sewage treatment and to determine the optimal conditions of operating parameters including applied voltage. COD loading. pH. Conductivity. And reaction time. They were determined based on the COD removal efficiency either by batch reactor operation or by continuous flow reactor operation. For monitoring the variation of COD with time a batch reactor was used, and continous flow reactor was operated at various detention times to estimate the effect of COD loading. The optimal applied voltage, COD loading, and conductivity was found 25V, approximately 160g COD/m² · day, and 1,000~1,300㎲/㎝, respectively. The appropriate pH value for proper operation was in neutral range. This process achieved over 90% of insoluble COD within 10min of reaction, and this efficiency was about 20% greater than when 100ppm alum solution was used for coagulation. It is expected that this electrocoagulation process may be best suited for treating gewage with high insoluble COD content. Good treatment efficiency and low operating cost could make this process gain an increased attention in the field of sewage treatment in not too distant future.
