<P><I>Patinopecten yessoensis</I>, is a species of scallop and a marine bivalve mollusk. In traditional East Asian medicine, scallop meat is used as a drug for the treatment of diabetes, pollakisuria, and indigestion. The present study was conducted in order to examine the potential anticancer effects of scallop flesh extract (SE) on MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. An MTT assay was used to evaluate cell viability and flow cytometry was used for the assessment of cell cycle distribution and apoptosis. The alteration in protein expression level was determined by western blot analysis, and the amounts of docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid in the SE were measured by gas chromatography. SE inhibited the growth of MCF-7 human breast cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner by inducing G0/G1 phase arrest. The cell cycle arrest was associated with the upregulation of p53 and p21, and downregulation of G1 phase-associated cyclin D1/cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) 4 and cyclin E1/Cdk 2. In addition, SE-mediated cell cycle arrest was associated with the promotion of apoptosis, as indicated by the expression of apoptosis-associated proteins and changes in nuclear morphology. SE appeared to induce the mitochondrial apoptotic cascade, as indicated by a decreased expression of Bcl-2, activation of Bcl-2 associated X protein, release of cytochrome c, decrease in procaspase-3, and an increase in cleaved-poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). Furthermore, the expression levels of Fas-associated via death domain and cleaved caspase-8 were increased in a SE dose-dependent manner. Taken together, these results suggest that the intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of apoptosis are associated with the anticancer effects of SE on MCF-7 cells. Thus, SE may be a suitable candidate for the treatment and prevention of human breast cancer.</P>
Wearable EMG-based HCI for Assistive Robots

Electromyogram (EMG) signal generated by voluntary contraction of muscles is often used in assitstive devices because of its distinct output characteristics compared to other bio-signals. This paper proposes a wearable EMG-based human-computer interface (HCI) for assistive robots such as a wheelchair robot and a myoelectric hand robot. The EMG signals for the HCI are measured from levator scapulae muscles concerned in shoulder elevation gestures and forearm muscles concerned in hand gestures. The experimental results show the proposed wearable EMG-based HCI is feasible for assistive robots.
박판 고속 플라즈마 맞대기 용접에서 용접 시작부의 용락과 미용융에 미치는 시작블록과 아크길이의 영향

In welding of thin plate, some defects such as melt through and unmelted zone occur easily at welding start, however there is a limited study on those problems. Therefore the effects of start block and arc length on melt through and unmelted zone at start were investigated in this study. When start block height was lower than base metal, there was melt through at start. And when the height was even with base metal, no unmelted zone existed. Unmelted zone was increased as start block height increased from 0mm to 0.5mm. However unmelted zone was not much changed as the height increasing from 0.5mm to 1.0mm. When gap existed between start block and base metal, melt through occurred. However, unmelted zone was increased as the contact force of start block on base metal was increased from 0kgf to 7.5kgf. And when arc length was decreased from 3.8mm to 3.0mm, unmelted zone was decreased. It was concluded that the optimum condition to prevent melt through and to minimize unmelted zone would be with start block height 0.25mm, contact force 3.0kgf, and arc length 3.4mm. This optimum condition was applied to the mass production line and resulted in satisfied outcome.
Benign osteoblastoma of the mandible : report of a case and review of the literrature

양성골아세포종은 악안면영역에서 발생하는 모든 종양중에서 1% 미만의 매우 드문 종양이다. 또한, 양성골아세포종은 임상적 증상이 특이하지 않으며 다양한 조직상을 보이므로 감별진단은 어려운 문제이다. 이증례는 23세 남자환자의 하악골에 발생한 양성골아세포종에 관한 증례이다. 저자들은 본 증례에서 감별진단을 위해 임상적, 방사선학적, 조직학적 소견에 관해 논의하였으며, 영어로 보고된 논문들 중에서 양성골아세포종으로 나타난 29증례와 본 증례를 같이 분석하여 함께 보고하는 바이다. The benign osteoblastoma is a rare tumor of bone representing less than 1% of all tumors of the maxillofacial region. Because the clinical feature of benign osteoblastoma is nonspecific and osteoblastoma has a pleomorphic histologic appearance, the differential diagnosis is difficult problem. A case of osteoblastoma in the mandible of a 23-year-old man is reported. We discussed the case from clinical, radiologic, and histologic feature for differential diagnosis. A search of the English language literature revealed only 29 cases that were considered to be osteoblastomas. One case from our clinic is reported and analized with previously described cases.
