        Bucillamine prevents cisplatin-induced ototoxicity through induction of glutathione and antioxidant genes

        <P>Bucillamine is used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. This study investigated the protective effects of bucillamine against cisplatin-induced damage in auditory cells, the organ of Corti from postnatal rats (P2) and adult Balb/C mice. Cisplatin increases the catalytic activity of caspase-3 and caspase-8 proteases and the production of free radicals, which were significantly suppressed by pretreatment with bucillamine. Bucillamine induces the intranuclear translocation of Nrf2 and thereby increases the expression of γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase (γ-GCS) and glutathione synthetase (GSS), which further induces intracellular antioxidant glutathione (GSH), heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) and superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2). However, knockdown studies of HO-1 and SOD2 suggest that the protective effect of bucillamine against cisplatin is independent of the enzymatic activity of HO-1 and SOD. Furthermore, pretreatment with bucillamine protects sensory hair cells on organ of Corti explants from cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity concomitantly with inhibition of caspase-3 activation. The auditory-brainstem-evoked response of cisplatin-injected mice shows marked increases in hearing threshold shifts, which was markedly suppressed by pretreatment with bucillamine <I>in vivo</I>. Taken together, bucillamine protects sensory hair cells from cisplatin through a scavenging effect on itself, as well as the induction of intracellular GSH.</P>

        웹기반 가상수업에 대한 대학생의 이미지 요인과 학생 변인별 이미지 차이 분석

        정보통신공학의 발달은 전 세계, 전 영역에 걸쳐 많은 변화를 가져오고 있고, 교육에 있어서도 교수-학습의 과정과 방법 등에 많은 영향을 미치고 있다. 최근 들어 국내·외 대학 교육에서도 이러한 최첨단 정보통신기술을 기반으로 한 웹 기반 수업과 그 효과에 대한 관심이 고조되고 있으며, 특히 대학교육에서 이러한 정보통신기술을 이용한 수업이 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 본 연구는 대학에서 이루어지고 있는 가상수업 체제에 대해 학습 주체인 대학생들이 어떠한 이미지를 지니고 있는 지에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 이를 위해서, Osgood의 의미 변별법(Semantic Differential Method)을 이용하여 이미지 조사 척도를 개발하였고, 그에 따른 대학생들의 전반적 이미지와 학생변인별 이미지 차이를 분석, 논의하였다. The purpose of this study was to analyze the students' images on cyber classes in university. In order to achieve this purpose, a questionnaire with 20 adjective-pair type items related to the images of cyber classes using Osgood's semantic differential methods was constructed and implemented to 685 university students(male 226, female 459; college of liberal arts 313, college of science 370; studied 237, unstudied 448). For the statistical analysis of students' responses, t-test and Factor Analysis in SPSSWIN program were done. The major findings were as follows: First, students had positive images on cyber classes in terms of 'convenient', 'opened', 'professional' aspects, on the other hand, they expressed negative images in that the cyber class has 'nonhuman' and 'individual' aspects. Second, as a result of examining the difference of image by gender, there were a statistically significant difference between male and female in 7 items among 20 items, and females expressed more positive images than males. Those are 'systematic-unsystematic', 'flexible-inflexible', 'able-unable' 'rational-irrational', 'professional-nonprofessional', 'human-nonhuman', and 'future-oriented - past-oriented'. Third, as a result of examining the difference of image by major track, it was found that there were a statistically significant difference between students in the college of liberal arts and students in the college of science in 5 items. Those are 'systematic-unsystematic', 'rational-irrational', 'able-unable', 'higher order level-lower order level' and 'effective-ineffective' images on the cyber class. Fourth, as a result of examining the difference of image by whether already experienced the cyber class or not, there were a statistically significant difference between experienced students and unexperienced students in 4 items, and experienced students had expressed 'positive' and 'participant' images on cyber class. Those are 'higher order level-lower order level', 'future-oriented - past-oriented' aspects of cyber class.

        Effect of Barley Containing Different Levels of Anthocyanin on the Performance and Egg Quality of Laying Hens

        산란계 사료 내 유색보리 혹은 청보리의 10 또는 20% 첨가가 산란계의 생산성과 계란 품질에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 총 200 마리의 Brown nick을 5처리구에 5반복으로 배치하며 8주간 사양하였다. 시험군의 사료섭취량, 산란율, 난중과 일산란량은 대조구와 유의성 있게 달랐으며 특히 사료섭취량, 산란량과 일산란량은 보리의 함량이 증가할수록 유의적으로 감소하였다. 계란의 품질 중 난황색, 난각강도 또는 난각색은 사양 6주차까지의 보리 시험군에서 유의하였으나 보리를 8주차까지 급이한다면 난백고와 더불어 호우유닛에 긍정적인 영향을 나타내었다. 사양 6주까지에 대한 보리의 급이는 난각색과 난황색의 수치를 첨가량에 따라 유의적으로 높인 반면 난각강도에 대한 유의성은 없었다. 산란계 사료 내 보리의 함량을 20%로 증가시켜 급이한다면 난백고와 호우유닛은 유의적으로 증가하였으며 특히, 유색보리보다는 청보리의 첨가군에서 수치적으로 높은 9.10과 94.53의 난백고와 호우유닛을 나타내었다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 산란계의 생산성과 계란의 품질을 고려한 보리 첨가 산란계 사료를 생산하고자 한다면 생산성에서는 대조구와 유사하면서도 계란의 품질을 향상시킨 청보리 혹은 유색보리를 최대 10%까지 첨가한 산란계 사료의 생산을 고려해 볼 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. To evaluate the effects of anthocyanin-fortified barley (AFB) and whole crop barley (WCB) addition to diets, 200 Brown Nick hens were assigned to 5 treatments with 5 replicates for 8 weeks. All the treated groups differed in feed intake, egg production, egg weight, and egg mass compared to those of a control group. As the intake of barley was increased, feed intake, egg production, and egg mass decreased. In terms of egg quality, the yolk color (YC), the egg shell breaking strength (SBS), and the egg shell color (SC) differed up to 6 weeks of growth. Feeding the WCB and AFB to laying hens up to 8 weeks had a positive influence on albumin height (AH) and the haugh unit (HU). Up to 6 weeks of growth, increasing the amount of barley in the diets of the laying hens had a positive effect on the SC and the YC but had no effect on the SBS. Diets including 20% AFB and WCB increased the AH and HU to 9.10 and 94.53, respectively. The results suggest that the addition of AFB and WCB up to 10% to the diets of laying hens could improve the laying performance and the egg quality.

        과학영재학교 자율탐구활동(R&E) 프로그램에 대한 학생의 인식 분석

        본 연구는 과학영재학교에서 운영하고 있는 자율탐구활동 프로그램에 대한 학생 의 인식에 관한 것이다. 조사 대상은 과학영재학교 재학생 309명과 졸업생 18명이 며, 재학생은 설문조사로 졸업생은 심층면담 방법을 실시하였다. 본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 자율탐구활동 프로그램 운영의 사전 교육에서 졸업생들과의 멘 토-멘티 형성, 연구 대학 사전 견학과 같은 구체적인 사전 교육이 필요하다고 인식 하였다. 둘째, 자율탐구활동 프로그램의 주제 선정 방법에 대해서 70%의 학생들이 적정했다고 보고 있으며, 자신의 주제와 비슷한 연구를 한 선배의 연구결과에 대한 자료집을 배부하는 것이 효과적이라고 보았다. 셋째, 자율탐구활동 프로그램의 운영 에서 학생-교수-교사가 같이 참여하는 형태를 가장 선호했으며, 연구기간은 융통성 있게 운영될 필요가 있다고 인식하였다. 넷째, 자율탐구활동의 성과로는 새로운 기 술을 익히게 되었으며, 교수와 연구협력자로 활동하는 것에 만족감을 보였다. 그러 나 자율탐구활동 프로그램이 더 발전하기 위해서는 평가방법에 대한 개선이 요구되 었다. 결론적으로 자율탐구활동이 더 성공하기 위해서는 지나친 성과위주에서 벗어 나고 학생중심의 팀원 구성이나 주제 선정이 이루어져야 한다. This research investigated the students’ perceptions of “Research & Education” programs administered in the science specialized gifted high schools in Korea. 309 students in the science specialized gifted high schools participated to the survey and 18 alumni took the in-depth interview. The conclusions of this study were as follow: Firstly, participants perceived the more comprehensive orientation period with grouping mentor and mentee members or taking close field trip to the higher education institution where they were working at etc. before conducting the actual “Research & Education” program. Secondly, 70% of the participants were satisfied with the methods of selecting the topics and wanted to have the previous research related to their projects. Thirdly, students preferred the coworking system, student-professor-teacher all together, and they needed the flexible research schedule and the duration of the program. Lastly, they have learned the new knowledge and new research methods. They showed high satisfaction working with the college level researchers. However, they asked the more specific and scientific evaluation system for the better program. In conclusion, for more developed and advanced “Research & Education” program, student oriented research grouping and topic selecting are needed rather than the excessive achievement centered program.

      • Association of Guanosine Triphosphate Cyclohydrolase 1 Gene Polymorphisms with Fibromyalgia Syndrome in a Korean Population

        <P><B>Objective.</B></P><P>Guanosine triphosphate cyclohydrolase 1 (GCH1) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis of tetrahydrobiopterin, which is an essential cofactor in nitric oxide (NO) production. Polymorphisms in the <I>GCH1</I> gene have been implicated in protection against pain sensitivity. The aim of our study was to determine whether single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the <I>GCH1</I> gene affect susceptibility and/or pain sensitivity in fibromyalgia syndrome (FM).</P><P><B>Methods.</B></P><P>A total of 409 patients with FM and 422 controls were enrolled. The alleles and genotypes at 4 positions [rs3783641(T>A), rs841(C>T), rs752688(C>T), and rs4411417(T>C)] in the <I>GCH1</I> gene were analyzed. The associations of the <I>GCH1</I> SNP with susceptibility and clinical measures in patients with FM were assessed.</P><P><B>Results.</B></P><P>The frequencies of alleles and genotypes of the 4 SNP did not differ between patients with FM and healthy controls. Among 13 constructed haplotypes, we further examined 4 (CCTT, TTCT, TTCA, and CCTA) with > 1% frequency in both FM and controls. No associations of <I>GCH1</I> polymorphisms with FM-related activity or severity indexes were found, although the number and total score of tender points in patients with FM differed among the 4 haplotypes (p = 0.03 and p = 0.01, respectively). The CCTA haplotype of <I>GCH1</I> was associated with significantly lower pain sensitivity and occurred less frequently than the CCTT haplotype in patients with FM (p = 0.04, OR 0.45, 95% CI 0.21–0.96).</P><P><B>Conclusion.</B></P><P>Our study provides evidence that certain <I>GCH1</I> haplotypes may be protective against susceptibility and pain sensitivity in FM. Our data suggest that NO is responsible for pain sensitivity in the pathogenesis of FM.</P>
