To identify DNA markers linked to a elytra polymorphism, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis was performed on DNA samples from four each colour pattern individuals (2 females and males), for example, succinea 1, succinea 2, conspicua, and spectabilis. As a result of performing AFLP analysis with the restriction endonuclease combination EcoRⅠ and Mse I, total of 2,269 AFLP fragments which were specific to succinea, conspicua and spectabilis was identified using 24 different AFLP primer combinations. Among these 2,269 fragments, 16 bands which were the most specific to one color patterns were isolated, cloned and sequenced. Subsequent UPGMA cluster analysis revealed that population of H. axyridis was divided four major group and these genetic tree showed that H. axyridis elytra colour diversity was affected by genetic polymorphism. It is considered that these genetic analyses may be facilitated the understanding of molecular genetic mechanism related with the wing colour pattern formation in this species.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>CXCL14 is a chemokine family member that is involved in various cellular responses in addition to immune cell activation. Although constitutive CXCL14 expression in normal epithelial cells may help protect against infection by activating immune systems, its expression in cancer cells has raised controversy regarding its possible role in tumorigenesis. However, the underlying mechanisms for this disparity remain unknown. Investigation of cellular CXCL14 binding properties might increase our understanding of the peptide's roles in tumorigenesis. In the present study, we found that CXCL14 binds to various cell types. Interestingly, binding to NCI‐H460 cells was prevented by heparan sulfate and N‐acetyl neuraminic acid. Next, we examined effect of CXCL14 binding in NCI‐H460 and NCI‐H23. CXCL14 enhanced proliferation and migration in NCI‐H460 but had no effect on NCI‐H23. A reporter gene assay with various transcription factor response elements revealed that only nuclear factor‐κB (NF‐κB) signaling was activated by CXCL14 in NCI‐H460 cells, which was blocked by BAPTA‐AM, TPCA‐1, and brefeldin A. Exogenous expression of some glycoproteins such as syndecan‐4, podoplanin, and CD43 in these cells enhanced CXCL14 binding and NF‐κB activity. Collectively, these results demonstrate that CXCL14 binding to glycoproteins harboring heparan sulfate proteoglycans and sialic acids leads proliferation and migration of some cancer cells. J. Cell. Spatiotemporal Expression and Functional Implication of CXCL14 in the Developing Mice Cerebellum

Cerebellar granule neurons migrate from the external gra-nule cell layer (EGL) to the internal granule cell layer (IGL) during postnatal morphogenesis. This migration process through 4 different layers is a complex mecha-nism which is highly regulated by many secreted proteins. Although chemokines are well-known peptides that trigger cell migration, but with the exception of CXCL12, which is responsible for prenatal EGL formation, their functions have not been thoroughly studied in granule cell migration. In the present study, we examined cerebellar CXCL14 expression in neonatal and adult mice. CXCL14 mRNA was expressed at high levels in adult mouse cerebellum, but the protein was not detected. Nevertheless, Western blotting analysis revealed transient expression of CXCL14 in the cerebellum in early postnatal days (P1, P8), prior to the completion of granule cell migration. Looking at the distribution of CXCL14 by immunohistochemistry revealed a strong immune reactivity at the level of the Purkinje cell layer and molecular layer which was absent in the adult cerebellum. In functional assays, CXCL14 stimulated transwell migration of cultured granule cells and enhanced the spreading rate of neurons from EGL micro-explants. Taken together, these results revealed the transient expression of CXCL14 by Purkinje cells in the developing cerebellum and demonstrate the ability of the chemokine to stimulate granule cell migration, suggesting that it must be involved in the postnatal maturation of the cerebellum.
Acute and genetic toxicity of GS-E3D, a new pectin lyase-modified red ginseng extract

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Korean red ginseng and its extract have been used as traditional medicines and functional foods in countries worldwide. Pectin lyase-modified red ginseng extract (GS-E3D) was newly developed as a dietary supplement for obesity, diabetes-related renal dysfunction, etc. In this study, the safety of GS-E3D on acute toxicity and genotoxicity was evaluated. For acute study, Sprague-Dawley rats were administrated by oral gavage at a dose of 5000 mg/kg GS-E3D. To evaluate genotoxicity of GS-E3D, we conducted three-battery tests, which are Ames test using <I>Escherichia coli</I> (WP2<I>uvrA</I> pKM101) and <I>Salmonella typhimurium</I> strains (TA98, TA100, TA1535 and TA1537), chromosomal aberration test -using Chinese hamster lung cells, and micronucleus test using ICR mice. In acute toxicity studies, there were no dead animals or abnormal necropsy findings in the control group and GS-E3D (5000 mg/kg) treated group. GS-E3D did not induce mutagenicity in the bacterial test, chromosomal aberrations in Chinese hamster lung cells and micronuclei in bone marrow cells of mice. Conclusively, the approximate lethal dose of GS-E3D was greater than 5000 mg/kg bw and GS-E3D has no genotoxic potential in the three-battery tests on genotoxicity.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Safety studies of acute toxicity and genotoxicity of pectin lyase-modified red ginseng extract were conducted. </LI> <LI> The approximate lethal dose of GS-E3D was greater than 5000 mg/kg bw in male and female SD rats. </LI> <LI> Bacterial reverse mutation test, <I>in vitro</I> CA assay, and <I>in vivo</I> MN test were used as three battery tests on genotoxicity. </LI> <LI> GS-E3D has no genotoxic potentials in three battery tests on genotoxicity. </LI> </UL> </P>

Soil phosphate accumulation has been problems in some organic farmlands in Korea. This study was conducted to solubilize the accumulated phosphate in organic upland soils using green manure mixtures as substitute for chemical materials (EDTA etc.). We investigated the effects of barley-hairy vetch mixtures on the productivity of biomass and nutrient and the solubilization of soil phosphate. Treatments were barley single (B), hairy vetch single (H), mixtures of B and H at the ratio of 2:1 (B2H1), 1:1 (B1H1), 1:2 (B1H2), and control (CON). Green manures were cultivated on phosphate accumulated soils (>1,000 mg Lancaster P₂O₅ kg<SUP>-1</SUP>) for 3 years. Mixtures were more effective for stable production of yields and nutrient than B or H, because dry matter yields of green manures were more variable in B and H single. The quality of B as green manure improved in mixtures, because the C/N ratio of B in mixture increased less than B single. In addition, H was effective for phosphate solubilization, as water soluble phosphate contents of H single (2017 and 2019) and mixtures (2019) were significantly higher than B single (2017 and 2019) and CON (2019) despite of phosphate uptake by green manures. Therefore, barley-hairy vetch mixtures could be useful considering green manure productivity and phosphate solubilization in phosphate accumulated upland soils.

Phosphorus (P) easily accumulates in farmland soil due to their high affinity to cations and clay, and thus their use efficiency of crop is low. Green manure-maize rotation system might be an efficient measure to reduce P accumulation in organic farmland by improving P uptake of crops. This study was conducted to investigatethe effects of green manure-maize rotation on P uptake of maize and excess P removal in organic upland soils. Maize mono cropping and green manure-maize rotation systems (barley (B), hairy vetch (H), mixture of B and H) were established in organic farmland, and the experiments were conducted for 2 years without additional nutrients application. Green manure had a significant impact on maize grain production. Maize P uptake increased with the increased rate of hairy vetch seeding. Water soluble P content in soil was further reduced in green manure-maize rotation systems compared to the mono cropping. The results suggest that green manure-maize rotation system (except barley) without nutrient supplement increases P uptake of maizeand thus decreases soil P accumulation.

This study is aiming to grasp how the periodical color preference of children has been changed, comparing and analyzing contents of a precedent study with research methods, experimental tools, and research subjects. The results are as follows: If previous studies of the past 2000s were numerously conducted by the study centering in a basic color of Munsell color system, the study after 2000s suggested the colors made a change of brightness and chroma level in each of series centering in a basic color of Munsell color system. The study in 1980s and 1990s strongly appeared preference of primary color that is neutral color system such as primary color of warm color series: yellow, red, etc and of neutral color series: violet, purple, etc. It also clearly appeared the tendency of preference which boys preferred cold color series and girls preferred warm color series, and the study in 2000s displayed the preferring tendency: boys preferred cold color series and girls preferred warm color series, but unlike the existing study, the preference was not biased to the chromatic color but demonstrated the expanding tendency toward the realm of achromatic color.
