        EFFECT OF IMMUNOPOTENTIATING AGENTS ON SUBCLINICAL MASTITIS IN CATTLE AND BUFFALOES

        Different parameters of subclinical mastitis were compared in 327 cattle and 493 buffaloes and the effect of immunopotentiating agents on subclinical mastitis in these animals was studied. Subclinical mastitis was detected in 8.2 percent buffalo and 24.0 percent cow quarter by modified whiteside test (MWT). In both the species there was decrease in lactose contents with increase in the degree of MWT reactivity i.e. $4.8{\pm}1.14$ to $2.31{\pm}0.82$ in cattle and $5.01{\pm}1.47$ to $2.36{\pm}1.02$ in buffaloes. While the chloride contents of the milk increased with increase in the MWT reactivity i.e. $0.19{\pm}0.4$ to $0.30{\pm}0.06$ in cattle and $0.20{\pm}0.04$ to $0.31{\pm}0.13$ in buffaloes. Micro-organisms belonging to Staphylococcus, Micrococcus, Bacillus, Streptococcus, Enterobacteria, Corynebacterium groups and yeasts were isolated from subclinical mastitis cases. Vitamin E and Levamisole cured 64.5 and 60.0 percent cases of subclinical mastitis in buffaloes but only 32.0 and 24.0 percent cases in cattle. Cure was not affected by the degree of MWT and the type of organisms involved.

        SOME BOUNDS FOR THE ZEROS OF POLYNOMIALS

        In this paper, we find a bound for all the zeros of a polynomial in terms of its coefficients similar to the bound given by Montel (1932) and Kuneyida (1916) as an improvement of Cauchy's classical theorem. In fact, we use a generalized version of Hölder's inequality for obtaining various interesting bounds for all the zeros of a polynomial as function of their coefficients.

        For a Polynomial P(z)= SMALLSUM _{j=0}^{n} `a _{j} z ^{j} with a_j ≥ a_j−1, a_0 > 0 (j = 1, 2, ..., n), a classical result of Enestrom-Kakeya says that all the zeros of P(z) lie in |z| ≤ 1. This result was generalized by A. Joyal et al. [3] where they relaxed the non-negative condition on the coefficents. This result was further generalized by Dewan and Bidkham [9] by relaxing the monotonicity of the coefficients. In this paper, we use some techniques to obtain some more generalizations of the results [3], [8], [9].

        Monte Carlo simulation of spin relaxation in core-shell nanowires of dilute magnetic semiconductors

        Spin transport behaviour in stand-alone and core-shell nanowire (NW) structure composed of dilutemagnetic semiconductor (DMS) has been analysed using Semi-classical Monte Carlo approach. Inspiredby recent attempts on exploring various factors instrumental in determining the spin dynamics, we haveemployed four DMS materials, namely, CdMnS, CdMnSe, ZnMnSe and CdMnTe for our study. Dominantmechanisms for spin relaxation, D’yakonov-Perel and Elliot-Yafet, have been actively employed in ourheuristic model to simulate the spin transport. The dependence of spin relaxation length (SRL) on thediameter of the core has been observed and explained. The first order calculations used to develop themodel shows the superiority of the core-shell structure over stand-alone nanowire (NW) structure interms of spin transport.

        Orosomucoid Serum Concentrations and Fat Depot-Specific mRNA and Protein Expression in Humans

        Obesity is associated with chronic low-grade inflamma-tion, which contributes to systemic metabolic irregularities and obesity-linked metabolic disorders. Orosomucoid (ORM), an acute phase reactant protein, was shown to be produced in response to metabolic and inflammatory signals in the adipose tissue of obese mice, which protects them from severe inflammation and subsequent metabolic dysfunction. In this study, we examined whether there are site-specific differences between visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue (VAT and SAT, respectively) ORM gene and protein expression from individuals with a wide range of obesity and the relationship between expressed and circulating ORM levels and measures of adiposity, insulin resistance, and pro- and anti-inflammatory markers and adipokines. The level of circulating ORM correlated positively with BMI, body fat mass, and serum leptin. It also correlated with fasting insulin, HOMA-IR values and C-reactive protein in men. There were no site-specific differences in ORM mRNA and protein expression between VAT and SAT, nor did we find a relationship between circulating ORM levels and its mRNA expression in either fat depot. We found that ORM mRNA expression correlated with mRNA expression of TNF-, IL-6, and adiponectin in VAT, and with TNF- and adiponectin in SAT. These observations are the first description linking adipose tissue ORM and pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules in humans. The close links of ORM and measures of adiposity, insulin resistance, and adipose tissue inflammation in humans reinforce previous experimental data and warrant further studies to explore a possible role of ORM in the patho-genesis of obesity-associated metabolic derangements.

        Parametric Investigation of Metals (Au, Ag, Pt and Cu) Using Analytical Hierarchy Process

        Metals especially gold, silver, platinum and copper are getting more attention for application in electronics fi eld due to their versatile properties. In this paper, we selected the materials after comparison on the basis of their signifi cant properties. Those properties are conductivity, physical properties, reactivity, cost and demand and supply. We investigate the conductivity of metals at various temperature values, their historically monthly prices along with their worldwide demand and supply. First, we compare their conductivity and resistivity for various values of temperature as well as by adding impurity into them. Secondly, we examined their responses when they are in contact with the atmosphere, their historically monthly prices, availability in the earth crust, and a brief discussion on the structure of these metals. These metals are widely used in electronics and jewelry because of their good conductivity, chemical stability and long lasting. We implemented the analytical hierarchy process for the parametric investigation of these metals which is a general theory of measurement. It has been used to derive ratio scales from both continuous and discrete paired comparison. This comparison is taken from actual measurement which refl ects the relative strength of preferences. The metals are also useful to design electrical stimulator with low-frequency current to regulate the blood of the human body. By using the stimulator at acupuncture points to pass through small electrical signal is useful to control blood fl ow in the human body as well as provides relief in pain.

        Differential Patterns of Serum Concentration and Adipose Tissue Expression of Chemerin in Obesity: Adipose Depot Specificity and Gender Dimorphism

        Chemerin, a recognized chemoattractant, is expressed in adipose tissue and plays a role in adipocytes differentia-tion and metabolism. Gender- and adipose tissue-specific differences in human chemerin expression have not been well characterized. Therefore, these differences were assessed in the present study. The body mass index (BMI) and the circulating levels of chemerin and other inflammatory, adiposity and insulin resistance markers were assessed in female and male adults of varying degree of obesity. Chemerin mRNA expression was also measured in paired subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue samples obtained from a subset of the study subjects. Serum chemerin concentrations correlated positively with BMI and serum leptin levels and negatively with high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol levels. No correlation was found between serum chemerin concentrations and fasting glucose, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, C-reactive protein or adiponectin. Similarly, no relation was observed with the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values. Gender- and adipose tissue-specific differences were observed in chemerin mRNA expression levels, with expression significantly higher in women than men and in subcutaneous than visceral adipose tissue. Interestingly, we found a significant negative correlation between circulating chemerin levels and chemerin mRNA expression in subcutaneous fat. Among the subjects studied, circulating chemerin levels were associated with obesity markers but not with markers of insulin resistance. At the tissue level, fat depot-specific differential regulation of chemerin mRNA expression might contribute to the distinctive roles of subcutaneous vs. visceral adipose tissue in human obesity.

        Effects of peripartal glucose precursor supplementation on lactation performance and metabolic health of primiparous and multiparous dairy cows

        Objective: Hyperketonemia remains a major metabolic issue of serious milk production and a major health concern in early lactation cows. Oral supplementation of glucose precursors (GP) can be used to prevent hyperketonemia in dairy cows. The objective of this study was to compare the beneficial effects of orally supplementing a mixture of GP on metabolic health indicators and milk production status of primiparous (PP) and multiparous (MP) dairy cows. Methods: Twenty-eight Holstein cows were blocked by expected date of parturition, previous lactation yield, and parity. The cows were randomly allocated to one of the four treatment groups (n = 7 cows/group) based on their parity and GP supplementation: i) PP cows fed basal diet only (PP-CON), ii) PP cows with oral supplementation of GP (PP-GP), iii) MP cows fed basal diet only (MP-CON), and iv) MP cows with oral supplementation of GP (MP-GP). Glucose precursor (glycoline liquid) was orally drenched (300 mL/d) in GP cows from 7 days prepartum through 7 days postpartum. Other than GP supplementation, all cows were fed similar pre- and postpartum basal diets. Results: In both pre- and postpartum periods, serum glucose concentration was increased, whereas β-hydroxybutyrate and free fatty acids were decreased in GP cows compared with the CON cows. Milk yield and milk components were statistically not different between GP and CON cows over the first 9 week of lactation. The yield of actual milk, energycorrected milk, 63-days cumulative milk, colostrum yield, and calf birth weight remained higher in MP cows compared with PP cows. Conclusion: Oral drenching of GP around calving can be recommended to successfully improve the metabolic health and reduce the negative effects of hyperketonemia not only in MP but also in PP dairy cows.

      • Plasma Membrane Ca^2+ ATPase Isoform 4b Binds to Membrane-associated Guanylate Kinase (MAGUK) Proteins via Their PDZ(PSD-95/Dlg/ZO-1) Domains

        Plasma membrane Ca^2+ ATPases are P-type pumps imortant for intraceooular Ca^2+ homeostasis. The extreme C termini of alternatively apliced "b"-type Ca^2+ pump isoforms resemble those of K^+ channels and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subunita that interact with channel-coustering proteins of the membrane-associated guanylate kinase(MAGUK)family via PDZ domains. Yeast two-hybrid assays demostrated strong interaction of Ca^2+ pump 4b with the PDZ1+2 domains of serveral mammalian MAGUKs. Pump 4b and PSD-95 could be co-immunoprecipitated from COS-7 cells overexpressing these proteins. Surface plasmon resonance revealed that a C-terminal pump 4b peptide interacted with the PDZ1+2 domains of hDlg with manomolar affinity(K_D=1.6nM), whereas binding to PDZ3 was in the micromolar range(K_D=1.2μM). In contrast, the corresponding C-terminal petide of Ca^2+ pump 2b interacted weakly with PDZ1+2 and not at all with PDZ3 of hDlg. Ca^2+ pump 4b bound strongly to PDZ1+2+3 of hDlg on filter assays, whereas isoform 2b bound weakly, and the splice variants 2a and 4a failed to bind. Together, these data demostrate a direct physical binding of Ca^2+ pump isoform 4b to MAGUKs via their splicing within the family of plasma membrane Ca^2+ pumps. Alternative splicing may ditate their specific interaction with PDZ domain-containing proteins, potentially influencing their localization and incorporation into functional multiprotein complexes at the plasma membrane.
